Re: Nerve Damage

I would imagine it's muscular. You said it started after a bit more walking. Just rest it a bit, ice it and take some pain meds.

You might also massaged it with your knuckles. Find the most tender spot, press on it as much as you can bear and then work your knuckles in circular motions around that point, gradually making larger and larger circles. continue this for about 2-4 minutes at a time, 3-4 times a day. The pressure should be painful but only to a point where the pain stops as soon as you take your hand away. It's known as 'acu-pressure' and will encourage the spasm and inflammation in the muscle to calm down. Let me know if it helps.

Re: Nerve Damage

Josephine, many thanks. Will give this a go.

Re: Nerve Damage

I think I have done what you asked?
I'm a Novice when it comes to computers - sorry.

Re: Nerve Damage

Hi, Just want to share with anyone who is interested I achieved the first goal I set for myself this morning, I managed to do up my own shoes, the first time since my operation. Yay I'm so pleased! Next on the list is be able to get to work independently, Oh I'm so looking forward to that, getting back to some normality is going to be great.

Re: Nerve Damage

What an accomplishment Monty, so happy for you! I tied my shoes approx. 2 weeks ago and got soooo excited, felt like learning to walk again. It'll get better, small steps at a time.

Re: Nerve Damage

can I ask Renate and Monty a silly question? How did you do your shoes up? Do you lean all the way forward (over the 90 degree rule)?

I know the 90 degree rule is for the first 6 weeks after that are we allowed to break it? Is it a gradual breaking of it or can we break it pretty much straight after? This was a question I am going to ask my surgeon on the 5th Sept, but as its come up I thought I would ask you guys

Tanny x

Re: Nerve Damage

What works for me is to slide the knee out to the side and bring up your foot to meet your hand. That is not fudging the 90 degree rule as much as.when you bend all the way over.
Just my way of doing it. There are sure to be many others.
Good luck, Tanny

Re: Nerve Damage

I put my operated leg on my chair, bend my left knee and tied, but I do it very slowly, nothing happened.

Tanny, if you read this thread, you'll get your answers. In it there is this chart

Re: Nerve Damage

HI to you all. I used a pair of Kitchen Tongs to first put my socks on then my shoes, my shoes have velcro fastening not laces so the tongs worked really well. (I don't use the tongs for anything else other than assist with dressing eg: I don't turn the steaks over with them) :th_heehee:
Jo your graph for risk of dislocation has concerned me a bit, I'm week 17 and thought all would be well in fact the Surgeon said I don't need to worry about any hip precautions anymore and that was 3 weeks ago! I wonder if he said that to me because of the Nerve Injury?

Re: Nerve Damage

Thanks Paignton - I did send you an email, did you get it?

Re: Nerve Damage

:DOH:Montymum, it's a risk not an inevitability! Just because the risk is high(-ish) doesn't mean you will dislocate. And your surgeon is perfectly right - no need for precautions once you hit that orange mark! But as time goes on, what risk there is will gradually get less and less, just like the Cheshire cat! :snork:

Re: Nerve Damage

Hi Josephine
My God! gave myself a terrible fright last night when taking my sock off with the kitchen tongs I felt this click and big pain in the hip reason I thought "What the hell have I just done". I gingerly laid down and did not move for a while then tentatively sat up and all seemed OK. I got my Husband to put my socks and shoes on again this morning. Real scary!
PS: What is Cheshire cat! ?

Re: Nerve Damage

Oh gosh....you never read Alice In Wonderland with the Chesire cat?

It's a big ol' fat cat that floats around in trees and can disappear and appear at will....usually just fading in and out of view.
