TKR A Fond Farewell

So interested to see how you go. I’ve struggled with swelling and associated discomfort and inability to bend at all for nearly 6 weeks. Seeing my surgeon for the first time on Thursday and am very keen to see what his take on this is. Have I rested it enough or not challenged it enough. Ongoing debate in my head since day one.

@Lilli215 to hear about the issues around the clips coming out. I can understand how you felt, wasn't what you were anticipating. Good luck with the physio :console2:
@Didot For the past week I've had the same debate going on in my head. I'm finding it hard not to exercise, as I've had a morning exercise and stretch routine for many years and I keep finding myself starting something and then realising I'm meant to be resting the leg! Good luck Thursday.

@Didot, I’ll be interested in what your surgeon says also, I dont see mine till end of March. Most of my swelling is in my thigh and the muscle running up the outside of the thigh is sore to the touch, can’t remember that happening with my first TKR two years ago.

Dreading this physio this afternoon, she’s new to the hospital and seemingly doesn’t suffer fools, I’m no fool but will she believe me when I say I can’t bend knee properly due to swelling, guess I’ll soon find out!!!
Take charge of the session from the first moment. It doesn’t matter if she believes you or not. Don’t let her bend your leg for any reason. And don’t push too much yourself. If it’s a tough session, who’s going to have pain later, you or her?

My first month of recovery I thought I had to do everything I was told. Then I found Bonesmart and learned I could take charge and only do what I thought was in my best interest.

I also learned that most of this recovery involves opinions, not hard facts. A painful PT session is that therapist’s opinion. Bonesmart’s gentler recovery approach is an opinion. We get to chose which opinion we follow, and to what extent.

@Jockette, just back from physio and she’s lovely! Spoke to her about the swelling which she examined and massaged for a short while. Told her I was struggling with heel slides coz of the swelling which she agreed with , she asked me to do some gentle slides which I managed and then she said one big one as far as you can do it and I wont touch you but I’ll measure it and wahoo measured at 105 which I am delighted with. So my measurements are 105 and 0 which I am so so pleased with as I’ve been worried. To go back next week to get swelling checked and just to carry on as per what I’ve been doing exercise wise up to now. :spin:

What a wonderful PT session you had! That's a blessing. I hope you can keep her every time.

A painful PT session is that therapist’s opinion. Bonesmart’s gentler recovery approach is an opinion.
The difference is Bonesmart's opinion is based on thousands of people that have actually had a knee replacement. A therapist most likely hasn't and has no idea of the after effects of what they do with that patient that day. Bonesmart has also had many, many years of experience with this knee replacement patients. I'll take hands-on experience any day over 'book learning'! Bonesmart has that hands-on experience.

Got a letter in today saying I have an appointment with OS to start process of getting a right hip replacement!! Has anybody on here had a TKR followed by THR within a few months? If so how was the recovery, both physically and psychologically? At this moment in time I can’t picture myself being strong enough to go through it all again:bawl:

Keep in mind it is your decision when to have your hip replaced. Take all the time you feel you need to heal from your knee replacement first, if that’s what you want to do. (it’s what I would do)

You'll know when you're ready. Don't be pushed into it before that. I'm definitely playing it by ear when it comes to my right knee. The OS said May, but at the moment it's not happening then.:no-fin:

I agree with the others. Wait until that knee is healed.

Quite pleased with progress so far, three weeks out, down to one cane indoors so can now help out a bit around the house with my spare hand. Physio coming along nicely and the swelling has gone down a fair bit HOWEVER am at my wits end trying to sleep, averaging three hours a night over last week and getting to stage where I hate going to bed as I toss and turn all night then drop off between four and five. It’s like my system is fighting the sleep, not even napping during the day at present. :headbang:

2 out of 3 is good, shame about sleep when you have had some good nights early on. It's horrible when you are so tired, but can't get to sleep. Is there anything in particular keeping you awake, such as pain, discomfort or an overactive mind? My sleep has improved this last week, thank goodness, so hopefully yours will too before long. A piriton tablet and clingfilm helped me I think, although it might have been co-incidental.

@Lindylee, just cant get comfy. If I find a comfy position for the knee then my hip gives me gip and vice versa:bored:

That's miserable, hope things improve for you soon, :console2:
