A few questions that I've been pondering:

@DrToonz just wanted you to know I have not won anything. Lost the shirt off my back so to speak. Sure glad they will be furnishing hospital gowns on Tuesday..hehe

Yay! Go 'Hawks!
Are you SURE they will supply you with those wonderful gowns and you don't have to provide your own?
Sorry you lost the farm. If it was from betting on the Niners, however, I'm not TOO sorry!
:)

Hey!!! Don't forget ME! Remember -- I'm on for the 28th, too (if I ace my urinalysis). Of course, YOU'RE having both done so you'll have better stories to tell...! But anyway, talk about feeling ambiguous about this undertaking: some days I cry with fear that "something" bizarrely, horribly, grotesquely unexpected will be found or will happen or the outcome will be catastrophically awful; on other, more rational days, I think... ok, this an adventure. All these other folks who had THRs can't be THAT superior to me!! Or you. And most are happy with their decision. So... I'm trying to brainwash myself into thinking positively. That's where I'm at... sometimes.

Hubby is well prepared to continue being my slave. Only hope it's for the short-term cause I sure as hell don't enjoy THIS role!

Does it kill you to turn over in bed? YEOWWWW!

Ellen

Absolutely not, Ellen. You are right there with all the rest of us. Guess my jackpot will literally be two new hips!

Sometimes turning over is ok then other times it is VERY painful. I grab the headboard for a little support.

@Freaky freak Yes, the headboard ... Me, too. Or sometimes I grab the belt that hubby looped through the headboard & use it for leverage. Was ingenious also for getting into bed; I tried on the side to be operated on, & couldn't get that leg up; I can now.

Same with me with turning over. Sometimes hurts a little and other times I literally yelp.
@shrinkette : I somehow lost that you were same day as I am. All three of us will definitely be recovery buddies. Keep up the posts!

T-1 week.

I'm feeling some stress as today I have my pre-op consultation where I presume they'll tell me the details of how it'll go (anyone familiar with this one-week-prior-to-procedure meeting with the nursing staff?).
I've got my list of questions ready to go. The DW is going with me so that I don't forget anything afterward.

Feeling a little bit like there must be more for me to do in this last week. I have not yet procured 'gear' that I may need or completely trip-proofed the house, but that's going down this week. Not too worried about that.

Also VERY excited for @Freaky freak as she goes in today for the same procedure that I'm having (a relatively uncommon Direct Anterior Approach Bilateral THR). Her last post (in her thread "I Have my Date!"), saying that she was feeling calm and optimistic, gives me hope that in a week I might be able to harness a little calm and optimism. ;)

I wonder if @shrinkette is feeling the same way.

In the week or two before my surgery I do remember being more calm than nervous. Of course a little nervous I wouldn't wake up or something crazy. But mostly calm and anxious to just get there and get it over with. As for being ready, it will get worked out. When I got sent home a day early I just sent my husband to the grocery store, he picked up everything we needed there and equipment at goodwill's borrowing program before he took me home. You will do fine!

@DrToonz Hmmm. Not quite at "calm & optimistic" yet, although I hope to be once this issue of whether or not I've beaten this UTI is resolved, which I hope to know later today. If it's -- hopefully -- negative, I can rev up again. I imagine I will experience a sort of fatalistic yet optimistic sort of attitude as I have with previous surgeries.

Btw, I never had a pre-op consult. Got packet of info, have good phone & email access to OS's nurse/assistant, & that's all they needed, I guess.

I'm all set up with the tools of the THR trade, as well as my house. I bought a new electric lift recliner as a go-to place in case bed or other chairs don't work. It won't be delivered until morning following surgery -- the 3rd delay! But it'll be in my bedroom, near bathroom. Got a great contoured wedge pillow to avoid "stacking" pillows (sounds annoying & too labor-intensive), as well as leg lifter. Still have the "hip kit" from knee surgery. Lot of handy things there like dressing stick, sock aid, & grabber.

An also thinking good thoughts of @Freaky freak as she undergoes op today. Hoping that the anterior approach makes recovery easier. Good luck with your visit today. Ask all your questions. Onward.....!!!

The item I found most useful for the first week or two were male urinals that allowed me to stay in bed at night despite the need to urinate. I have a very enlarged prostate and it has been years since I was able to sleep a full night without some visits to the toilet. The surgery seemed to make the urgency for urination a bit worse, at least initially. The majority of posters here are young (much less than 67/69, the average age for male/female hip replacement), however, there may be some out there who can identify with this situation.

My hospital has a 3 hour pre-surgery class - including lots of information, a book on hip/knee replacements (created by them) and talks by PT and OT and exercises to do. We knew the exact schedule after surgery for when we would be doing OT/walks/etc. It was very helpful.

Didn't mind that I don't sleep all night and often get up to use the bathroom 2-3 times a night - moving around and walking actually felt very good.

So I had a 1.5-hour meeting with a nurse today who gave me the run-down on what to expect. No surprises because of all that I read on this forum. Nice. Thanks, Bonesmart!
I did leave there with a great deal more stress than I went in with just because of all the detailed medical history questions.
A nice dinner our and a glass (OK, two. OK, they were big) of wine and im fine now.
The DW is taking care of making sure I have an 'assistant' 24/7 fire the first week (sounds luxurious!).
Now... T-7 days.

Glad your meeting went well. Yes, sometimes there is too many questions to answer....sounds like you are all set to go...fabulous that you will have do much help after the op...it makes all the difference. The wine sounds like it should be on prescription !! Not too long for you now. Chrissie xx
