THR 80 year old mom hip replacement, slow recovery

I am not a medical person but I wanted to tell you that my OS also said I didn’t need any PT for my hip to heal. Many times people post about pain here in the forum and it turns out it is from the PT so I agree with Layla and Jaycee that you might want to try stopping her PT, at least until she hSales a bit more. Sending healing thoughts your way ....

Glad your mum's feeling more comfortable with better pain relief @Canucklady .......she's a very brave lady to have such a big op when she can't communicate with the staff......I'm sure that grit will see her through her recovery. She's also very lucky to have you to care for her so well, I hope you are fully recovered from your bronchitis now

Rough day again today. Mom is in alot of pain still. Plus pain meds causing constipation, so one more thing to deal with. Appt with surgeon tomorrow. Hopefully he will have good tips

Hi @Canucklady
I'm sorry to hear your mom is still in pain. I hope she's taking a break from PT.
Hopefully the OS will have some advice tomorrow. Let her know we're thinking
of her....looking forward to hearing how her visit goes tomorrow.
A great night to you!

Well OS sees no issue with x-rays and range of motion is good. He says pain is muscle pain, and he suggested heat might help in morning. Ice after excercises. He told her to just walk and walk and walk. She slept better last night, so good night sleep helps alot

Good news to hear @Canucklady. A real break for both you and Mom. If your mom has arthritis those grabbers can sometimes be a real issue. I do and sometimes my hands will freeze up as I squeeze the handle to grab something; that spasm is very painful. Regardless, she'll learn as she goes. The trick is not to get impatient with yourself. Continued success to her. All good wishes.

All great news @ Canucklady.
Wonderful update....thanks!
Hope both you and mom have a great day!

@Canucklady well I'm glad to see I'm not the only person to have issues with those grabbers....think I must be very uncoordinated :heehee:

So glad that your mum had a better nights sleep and that her OS is happy with everything

Hello everyone. Mom is doing alright. Just terrible inner thigh/groin pain only when lying down.

Next challenge is getting in/out of car. My brother hired a wheelchair accessible van for this week to get her to appts. But eventually we are going to have to bite the bullet and get her in a car.

Hi @Canucklady
It's great to hear mom is doing well aside from the inner thigh / groin pain.
Have her consider icing if she isn't already. She could be icing 40-60 minutes several times a day.

Once again....if she's currently engaged
in PT consider having her take a step back until her pain is gone.

Just an FYI in case you're not aware. YouTube has "how to" videos on different activities in relation to THR
such as entering and exiting a car. If PT is visiting your mom at home I'm sure they could incorporate
Instructing her how to get in and out during one of her sessions, using the PT's vehicle if mom doesn't own one.

Something helpful is to place a large trash bag on the seat as it makes it easier to swivel once on the seat to get your legs from out of the car, into the car. It's not as daunting as you / she may think. It was just another thing I needlessly worried about and later realized it was really no big deal. I think she'll feel the same afterward.

Hope your mom's pain improves. Best wishes for a great Thursday!

Hello everyone. Mom's pain seems to be getting better. Her family doctor prescribed Celebrex and that is helping more than other pain meds. Being in her own home has helped. Next week my brother will stay with her during day. Hopefully she will be able to stay on her own following week. One day at time.

Lovely to hear that, @Canucklady ....it must have seemed like a long haul, but sounds like you're on the home run now (sorry, my metaphors all seem very energetic today!) I'm sure your mum feels much better just for being at home amongst her familiar things.....best wishes for her continued recovery

Wonderful news! @Canucklady
I'm happy her pain is decreasing.
I bet she'll love having her son with her all week.
Hopefully it won't prove difficult for her when your brother leaves.Wondering if she's been on her own at all yet?
Wishing you all a great week!

She has been on her own for an hour or two. The most she will be on her own really will be 5 hours max, as I will work from home half days and I stay with her at night until she is able to get in/out of bed

At least that is the plan.

Hi @Canucklady
Wondering if your mom has a leg lifter. I know many people use them.
Something to consider if she doesn't already have one.
Wishing you both a nice week!

I'd say it's a very good sign! Wonderful news too.
Who knows what she's doing when you're not around :spin::dancy: :happydance: :heehee:
Maybe mom loves her kids being around her :what:
@Canucklady

that's a good sort of shock to have....bet your mum's chuffed with herself :yay:
