THR 80 year old mom hip replacement, slow recovery

@Layla thanks. Getting in and out of bed is main challenge for her. Getting up from chair as well.

I have 3 brothers, but only one is helping really. We are starting to burnout and she isn't even out of hospital

A very long journey for all of you @Canucklady. Getting out of bed and out of chairs can be difficult in the beginning. The more she does the confidence will grow. Hopefully they get rehab lined up soon. Please try to take care of yourself.

I'm sorry @Canucklady it can be difficult in the beginning as I'm assuming with the chair,
they have instructed her to hold her leg extended straight out and in mid-air.
Bed can be tough also if she has limited upper body strength.

Hopefully she begins to find one of the two a bit easier. Let's pray that every milestone
spurs her on helping build her determination and motivation, in return giving you hope.

One can't help but feel they'll get her moving once in re-hab, I wish that day would come quickly.
You must be drained, worried, frustrated and just plain sick and tired. My heart goes out to you both.
Prayers for strength and perseverance continue. Please keep us posted. :console2: :prayer:

Our Canadian Health Care system needs improvement. They are not ready to take care of our seniors. And private options are very expensive and limited.

Anyway mom walked a bit on her own today. My brothers and I are making her walk more and more each day.

I had complete breakdown at work today.
Exhausted

I'm so very sorry that you are struggling. It's difficult enough to worry about our aging
parents going through a major surgery and recovery at its best. Your mom's journey has been rough
in the sense it seems she's given up hope at times. Difficult for a devoted daughter to witness.

Waiting on re-hab must be maddening. It makes sense you're exhausted with the schedule you've been keeping and the emotional anguish you're suffering in all of this. My heart really goes out to you.
I'm relieved to hear you're able to depend on your brothers somewhat. I hope they continue to do their
part allowing you a reprieve now and then.

Let's hold on to hope that these daily walks continue to strengthen her and spur her on. Please take care of yourself, even if it means asking your brothers to step up as you take a few steps back temporarily.
A re-charge may be in order.....like a mental health break. Then you could go back refreshed and ready to take on the next leg of the journey.
I will continue to remember you all in prayer. Hugs to you!
@Canucklady

So went into hospital this morning. Only to find my mom trying to get up from chair on her own. I helped her up and off she went on her own to bathroom. Her nurse and I were in shock. Still needs rehab but she isn't waiting around for them

Great news! Maybe she needed to have a reason to fend for herself for a few minutes! Whatever the reason, take it and run!

That’s great progress. Would they happen to have a slightly higher chair with arms are a cushion they could put in chair to make rising easier?

As caregivers we all have our moments of breakdowns. That’s why it’s important for us to take care of ourselves.

What wonderful news to read! Each of these steps in the right direction
will help build your mom's confidence. I'm happy for you both!
It shows your mom has determination or she wouldn't have attempted it.
Possibly all this sitting around is getting to her and she's decided, enough already!
Whatever the reason....it calls for a PTL and a big YAHOO!
@Canucklady

Terrific news @Canucklady ....now that she knows she can do it hopefully it lead her to do more and more. Hope you can take a night off and just chill now. Take care

Hi @Canucklady
Would love to hear that today was good and mom continues to improve.
Hoping you're getting some well deserved rest and feeling more at peace.
Keep us posted when you're able.
Hugs

No news on Rehabilitation bed. Still waiting in hospital. We are in Canada, so this time of year lots of ice/snow means falls and broken bones which means shortage of space.

Anyway we are working with my mom getting her walking everyday.

Next step is to get her to stand on her own.

Hi @Canucklady
It's a shame it's taking so long to get her into re-hab.
Thankfully she's still willing to do her walks.
Hopefully the walking will spur her on to get up on her own unassisted, or stand unassisted soon.
It sounds hopeful. She's taking steps in the right direction.
Until next time....

Hi @Canucklady
Just stopping by to say Hi and wishing you both a great day!
Hoping mom feels energized and ambitious today and ready to try standing
on her own. Please keep us posted. I know there are better days on the horizon.
Hugs to you!

Update on my mom (80 Years old):. She is walking short distance on her own, today she got up from chair on her own. Next step getting up out of bed. Her physiotherapist showed us different way with pillow between knees and rolling onto side and pushing herself up with bed railing. She practiced that today. Still no bed in rehabilitation unit, so she gets minimal physio. But she is still improving.

Brilliant news @Canucklady .....she doesn't have to make fast progress, just continue to make some progress (and the occasional plateau will just let her consolidate). Tell her from us how well she's doing :yes!:....by the time they find her that rehab bed, she'll be telling them how to do it

Great news @Canucklady. Steady progress is the key. Given your mom’s overall condition prior to surgery, this may be the right speed for her. It’s great they’re showing her ways to do things. My in home physical therapist told me there was nothing I could not do, but I might need to think them through and do them in different ways.
