Hip Arthroscopy 6 months post OP Labral repair

Not many look forward to surgery, so you're in good company. We look forward to the final result.
I’m not even looking forward to my surgery because I am fairly certain I will still have pain once this hip gets fixed.
Joint replacement surgery is one of the most prevalent surgeries performed worldwide. The outcomes of these surgeries have become excellent based on a number of techniques changing over the years. The implants are durable and long lasting, with longevity much greater than before offering an increase in the likelihood you’ll never have to experience this procedure again.

No apologies necessary. You're welcome to vent anytime you feel the need. We understand.
Wishing you comfort and peace mind as you wait out these next days before surgery. :console2:

Best Wishes tomorrow! Please let us know how you're doing when you feel up to it.
Hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks for the well wishes. I had my surgery done last night at around 645pm. Boy was that a fun day of no drinking or eating anything. Anyway, the surgery was done and he ended up having to do a larbral reconstruction due to the condition of my labrum. I am actually feeling so much better after this surgery compared to the last. The pain in my joint when I move is the same as it was last time but I do not have the hip flexor or muscle pain like I did last time. If I am laying down then I have little to no pain which is so much better than the first to around where I had constant pain no matter what. I start my physical therapy tomorrow morning and guess we will see where this recovery takes me. Since he did a labrum reconstruction I have to wear my hip brace and 20lbs flat foot for a minimum of 6 weeks to really protect the new labrum. Once again thanks for the well wishes.

So glad you have had the surgery and feel more positive. Not being an expert I have no advice but lots of good wishes that you are now on the path to recovery.

Welcome back to the healing side @kkolb327 !

Hope all is going well 3ish months post op @kkolb327. I was just given the news that I need a labrum / socket reconstruction. This will be my 3rd hip arthroscopy. Curious how you doing so far with the recovery and if you have an insights / pointers for me as I wrestle with the decision to move forward with surgery.

Sorry to hear you are facing a third surgery. My recovery has been better than my last but still a struggle. I did not have my socket reconstructed so I cannot speak to that, but the reconstruction has been going ok. I still have moderate hip pain but nothing too horrible. My main issue right now is my lower back. I’m thinking it may be my S.I Joint but I’m not sure. It has been extremely painful, and I’m unable to be seated for more than 10 minutes without it being unbearable. I see my doctor again on the 17th so we will see what he says. Also my opposite “good” hip has been painful as well.

How much pain are you in? I’m sure a third surgery would be tough to imagine but at the same time you want to be healthy and not in pain any longer. I think if I had to have a third I would look into a hip replacement but I am not sure how that works. Let me know if you have any specific questions. Good luck!

@kkolb327, thanks for the insight. Pain right now is a 2-3 on a day to day basis with no activity. Add in activity and it shoots up to a 4-5 and then I am icing. My biggest issue right now is I am having a hard time sleeping unless I take Advil pm or some NSAID to help the pain at night. My primary surgeon, 2nd and 3rd opinion all agree that I am not a candidate for a THR due to age and lack of arthritis. Hip preservation vs. Hip replacement is the window I am still in.

Hi there @eggy293

I had a hip arthroscopy to repair a torn labrum and also had some bone shaving done but ended up having a THR a year later due to arthritis. Before the THR I had ongoing pain and had 2 cortisone injections and also developed psoas bursitis and had to have 10 mil of fluid drained. I was a bit of a mess and was hoping that I would become a candidate for a replacement. The surgeon I was seeing at the time was very conservative and didn't recommend a THR due to my age (I was 48 at the time). I sought a second opinion and was booked in for surgery a couple of months later. Unlike you though I did have arthritis but honestly the THR was amazing as it has alleviated everything. I am a new person.

@eggy293 I’m sorry to hear that. I think it is just going to be a personal decision whether you’re in enough pain to potentially go through a third surgery. Since I last posted my hip joint has become extremely painful and I am worried something else is going on. I’m not sure if I would go through a third surgery unless it was a replacement but that’s just me. Good luck

It's been three months to date since your procedure. Happy Three Month Anniversary!
I hope the pain has eased over the past week and a half. How are you doing?
Please know that we're here and we do care.

Hey sorry for the late reply, my doctor had to reschedule so I went to see him today instead. I am still having pain in my hip that feels like it did before surgery. He thinks it is possibly a sports hernia and is having me get a pelvic MRI to see. I’m tired of all of this and have just about come to the conclusion that this is how my hip will be and it is what it is.

Please don’t give up. There are still plenty of options for you. The MRI will give a lot of good information that should help you decide what to do next. Sometimes getting to the bottom of a problem takes a while. Doctors usually want to go on the conservative side with lots of testing to rule things out before jumping into a treatment or more surgery.

I’m trying not to, it’s just been extremely frustrating. I’m thankful I have a good doctor this time around. Hopefully the MRI shows something.

It's easy for me to say hang in there but MRI will definitely give more light to your current situation.
It's so easy to get discouraged.
I'm looking forward to MRI results, please let us know.

Hello all, I received my MRI results today as follows.

Both hip joint spaces are preserved. There is blunting within the right posterosuperior acetabular labrum and compatible with a tear. This is seen on images 28 through 31 of the coronal STIR series.

Impression:
Right posterosuperior acetabular labral tear.

Obviously this is not what I wanted to see. I had my labrum reconstructed and my impingement corrected so I am not sure how there could be another tear. I am trying to hold out hope that the blunting could be from a reconstructed labrum but I am not sure. I see my doctor on the 25th. I do not think I can mentally go through a third surgery so not sure where to go from here. Thanks for listening and would love any insight anyone has.

I’m sorry that things didn’t turn out as you had hoped. Your surgeon is the best one to determine what the next steps will be.

I feel for you, I really do! I think I can imagine a little of how you must be feeling. I'm hearing, 'emotional fuel tank very much empty', from your words. I want to give you a little hope however, it's been my own personal experience and observation of others facing challenges, that there is a reserve tank you didn't know you had.

It may take a little time to locate it. You may trip over yourself finding it but I think I can say with absolute certainty, you will find it.

Be kind to yourself in the meantime. You've been through a lot and you've just hit yet another hurdle and it felt like a brick wall. I think it's time for emotional RICE. Rest, Inwardly digest, Consider the practicalities... Elevate your mind. Push your thoughts towards what is possible and achievable and away from everything that is a negative and impossible currently. It's hard to do but like anything, it gets easier.

Warm wishes and healing thoughts and prayers coming your way

That's a lot to digest & can certainly see how you would be very discouraged. I hope we can help support you here.
