TKR 3 weeks post op

Yes it was just a rare occasion, a friend came by and wanted to see the house, not an everyday occurance

Or good. I'm glad it's not a daily occurrence. That would up your pain quite a bit to do that.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about losing their limp post op - I am 7 weeks out now and only use the cane if I go into crowded places like the mall. At other times I notice I still have a limp but not as pronounced as before surgery. Will this go away as my knee gets stronger or do I need to see a PT to 'learn how to walk again' as I read on someone's previous post.
Cait :)

I limped and still do as I get tired. But it's improved a lot. I seem to turn my left leg out and even when I walk I turn it out some what. Have for so long it seems normal and uncomfortable to try and keep it straight, I find this even while sleeping this leg turns out. But just as most say, I am seeing improvements all along the way. Needed the device to help put my sock on my tkr leg, put it away at Thanksgiving and don't know exactly where so I've had to put my socks on with out it, and I'm doing it. Back to cutting my own toenails another milestone. Sleep, I'm pretty much back to my normal sleep pattern, sleep best when I first retire for the night and awake for a bit 3/4 hrs later, then fall back to sleep for a much more restless sleep the rest of the night. Still need to become more comfortable going down steps, doing ok in the new snow so far, being careful with my footing, but even with unbalanced surfaces outside I seem ok. So I guess after I wrote you this book, I do think as time goes on you will see improvements all over the place.

In my opinion, we have limped for so many years, that limping is normal for us. So, to stop that limping we have to relearn how to walk without a limp. I've asked friends to tell me if I'm limping. I am concentrating hard on not limping. Sleeping is still a struggle. Like @zzevi, I fall asleep rather quickly, but just don't stay asleep. Bathroom visits are part of the problem, as is having to move the knees. But, I am sleeping 100x better than before my tkr.

Thank you for your reply zzevi and sistersinhim

I will try to focus more on walking heel toe and on my stride while keeping my back straight and see how I go over the next 4 weeks.

I really wondered for a while if I would improve to the point that I'm not limping or at least limping very little and it depends on the day and if I am tired or not at this point. But it will come in time. It's weird how things do just seem to come back over time, I think the recovery for this is so long and ongoing that it easy to feel that we've lost how to walk with out a limp, how to have a normal gait etc.... Think the healing the swelling and stiffness all play a part on how long or soon we regain movements in the joint.

I practiced walking heel toe using my cane, little by little putting less weight on the cane.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Well I joined the ODIC - there was so much still to do on Christmas Eve plus I stayed up much longer than I should. Now my knees angry at me and I have guests arriving for lunch in 4 hours - I told my sister I was struggling still and her comment was 'shouldn't you be over it all now' and she's a nurse bwhaha. I explained at 8 weeks post op it is getting better but I'm not even close to OVER IT.

Anyway I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas day with family and friends whether today or tomorrow depending on where you live [emoji319]

Your tree looks lovely.

It was a bit ambitious to invite people for Christmas lunch so early in your recovery. Do make sure that they all help and, after the meal, retire to your room for a rest, while they deal with all the clearing up.

It's a shame that your sister didn't realise, but I think that's pretty typical. As a nurse myself, I would probably have thought the same thing, until I had a knee replacement of my own. You have to go through this before you understand.

Have a lovely Christmas. :santa sleigh: :merry christmas:

Thank you Celle. Since my mum died in 2001 Christmas lunch has always been at my home but I will definitely have everyone help x

I had Christmas Eve dinner (tradition) at my house a month after my infection surgery. I made one dish a day for a few days. On Christmas Eve I sat in my chair and everyone took care of themselves and the cleaning up. Just take a seat and when someone asks if they can help, give directions. Merry Christmas!

Thanks KarriB it went well and I am now about to take an afternoon nap. [emoji42]

Merry Christmas! I bet 75% of us hit the ODIC within these 48 hours! Will we never learn?

You are about where I am. I sit at work all day and took nine weeks off as well. I return to work on Tuesday. My only remaining jssue is they heavy banding feeling that wraps around my leg.

Hi Pontoon- I believe that sensation is due to swelling and should go sooner or later. Can you ice and elevate at work- that's my plan

IF you have a clear space under your desk
IF you have enough height to at least have your leg parallel to the ground (I doubt you'd be able to really elevate it)
IF you can obtain some kind of foot stool
IF you have somewhere you can freeze your ice packs
then perhaps yes!
