Anyone else getting tired of hearing stories about "My brother was golfing 6 weeks after his bilateral. It's a piece of cake!" Or "Don't know why you think you can't make Thanksgiving for 18 again this year. Susie called me from the mall the week after her TKR and said there was nothing to it!" I feel like some of my relatives and business partners are putting some unrealistic expectations in front of me.

YES!!! I still hear it about my hip replacements too. People sometimes make it sound like a walk in the park. Then they make you feel guilty if you are not doing as "well as Uncle George"

Yes!!!!!! Thank goodness for this forum. My hairdresser said he was back on the job full time at 6 weeks and said his SIL was a wimp because after 6 months she is still uncomfortable. I held my tongue.
I had to tell my grown kids what the surgery entailed so they understood I would not be up and about in a few weeks.

I have brought forward this month's list so that you can easily see who your surgical buddies are.

Welcome to our latest and all October Feisties!

Your thoughts please? To deal with my jitters I've been housecleaning, cooking and freezing meals and meeting all my volunteer obligations in advance including a bake sale this weekend before my surgery. I was thinking about baking some gourmet chocolate chip cookies and making a dozen or so cute packages with little "Good Morning" tags on them. My surgery will be at 7:30 in the morning so we'll all be there pretty early. Do you think the surgical, prep and post-op staff would view this positively and not hokey? I wouldn't put my name on them and would maybe ask my prep nurse where they could be put to be accessible to all. I'm a bilateral and thought the cookies might be a nice snack after my lengthy surgery.

A snack for you too? Not sure if you will feel like eating right away. Maybe once you get to your room. Good luck!

Are you kidding?! Hospital folk love this sort of thing! There are always one or two on special diets or leery of home-baked goods, but I think your idea is most gracious and the cookies will be greatly appreciated. I am planning to send baskets of mini-muffins to pre-op, surgery and the floor after I'm home. By the way, one of the very best things you can do is send letters of appreciation to the hospital administration. Be specific- each department and employee mentioned will be positively recognized by their higher ups!

I agree with @Clipless. That's really sweet, @BusterBeans.

Me? I'll be trying to bank stories before my surgery. I'm a journalist and I have no idea how foggy my brain will be and for how long after the surgery. I don't have a physically demanding job at all (except when I have to cover something specific, but I won't be doing that for months), everything is by phone and computer.

I write about foreign policy, so it tends to be somewhat intricate. Is it realistic to think that I will be able to start writing again by the week after the surgery?

You might be able to write a bit, with naps in between. Looking back at my original recovery thread, I posted a lot and it all seemed to make sense, however the subjects were limited and self-centered: 1) me, 2) my knee, and 3) how I was feeling. I'm not sure I could have focused on something so intricate as foreign policy!

Excellent idea!! As a former nurse I can tell you we were always thrilled with gifts of food. Some days it was the only thing we had time to eat that shift. The staff will be very appreciative!!

shellyglaze.19543/ I am 1 day ahead of you, and am on my second replacement as well. It has been 8 years since my first was done. Good luck on Tuesday! I will be cheering you on with my new knee! I know they say that no 2 kknees are alike, but I have to belief that going in with positivity and the knowledge that we've done this before and we can do it again just a successfully has to give us a step up.

nomore ski and crappy knees it sounds like we will all be bionic by this time next week. My surgery is on Monday. Don't know how quicklly I will be back on here. How many days are they telling you folks you will be in the hospital?

In our pre-surgery classes we were all told that single knees can only stay one night in the hospital; bilaterals can stay two nights. Patients can go to an acute rehab facility (in-patient PT facility) for one week if they live alone with no one to care for them or if they have a pre-existing condition. Patients can go to a sub-acute (skilled care/nursing home) facility if they have spent their permitted number of nights in the hospital but cannot walk the expected length, do steps, or demonstrate they they can get into bed, chair and toilet.

@knee2
Hi knee2. I don't know how many nights i will be in the hospital. I am guessing 2, as long as there are no complications...i don't expect any. Then i plan to go to an acute rehab for about a week. I need to be able to get in and out of bed and on/off the toilet by myself. Nothing is definate, but with bilaterals, i will qualify for acute rehab and plan to go. I won't have anyone during the day to really help..my 91 yo dad can get me my ice..but not out of bed!
Fingers crossed for all of us happy and healthy on "the other side"
