First round of pool therapy this AM...not what I expected, but not bad either. I was not swimming, but there were about 25% of the activities involved moving myself around the pool with different kicks with some sort of float in my hands.

The best part for me was moving myself around the pool with an upright running motion...with my feet NOT touching the bottom. Not propelled by arms, just the running motion of my legs. Actually, simulated running fairly well...much better than an ellipitcal.

I was very happy that despite warnings...the pool was not cold :yes 4: (i HATE cold water....)

Decent workout...i feel like I will be a good kinda sore later...

Recent Aha Moment....the other nite I noticed I was running up the stairs 2 at a time (something that's always been pretty normal for me). It may've been the first time...or for all I know I'd been doing it before. Wasn't good or bad...just surprised me.

I've been back to work full time since about week 4. I say full time but i'd say most days end up only being 6-7 hours (If i need to crash...I disappear for an hour) I'm so lucky to work from home and have an accomodating group...

Before work I do:
15 min on bike
5-8 min on rowing machine
stretches

Midday - 50% of the time I get out for a walk...1+ miles

After work:
15 min on bike
stretches
strengthening with bands (multi foot long elastics)

I enjoy the workouts...happy that PT gave me new things to do, but this regimen will also need tweaks or may get boring too after some weeks. What can I say...I'm an advocate of having the experts analyze my progress and keep me from developing bad habits. If it wasn't for these folks I think I would be pushing the envelope more than I should. They keep me on track without hurting myself!

Z....it's so great to read about how well you are doing. I like your analysis about the MIS procedure....very astute!!! You are proof of what we always say....it's the SURGEON that really counts in all this.

Well done Z! Your recovery is really ticking along!

Hi John

Good to hear that the aqua PT is working out OK.

Stairs 2 at a time - your recovery is certainly a great advert for the MIS approach! :thumb:

It either says something good about MIS or something less than flattering about what is between my ears! :rolleyespink:

Thank you, kind sir, for thinking the former!

Z

Hi Z,

Your recovery is going so well...congratulations!

The pool sounds good, I'm sure it's easier on bones. Wow 2 steps at a time that's impressive!

Continueed success!

Wow Z... Now I feel really lazy after reading your exercise routine.. You are doing fantastically well!

I do pool work, when the weather is warm enough... We just have not had a summer here in OZ to go to my outdoor heated pool. But I do know what you mean about running in the water, isn't it great with no gravity?... But when the 'G' takes over when I get out it doesn't feel as good..

Well done you :)

Z, your progress is awesome :thumb:. Getting back into a little soccer doesn't seem so far-fetched now does it?

I know what you mean about wanting to push the envelope. I keep looking at all of my workout stuff and sighing.

How does the rowing feel on your hips? It is something that always intrigued me but I never got a chance to try it pre-op.

Jen,

Thanks for the Thumbs Up...

Rowing feels great. I think my range of motion is largely there...I may not crunch forward as much as I used to (or will) yet...It just feels like it would be abusive without much benefit. And on the pull I think my leg push is 75% or less. But I can easily wipe myself out in 8 min if I wanted to without beating up my hip and getting a whole body workout. In the crunch position my elbows are just past my knees, so I am well past 90 degrees...so that would be a no-no for some.

On another note....I accidentally discovered that I cannot run yet!! (surprise) I was working at my desk when i suddenly heard some REALLY bad cat screaming...and crashing outside. This occasionally happens but this sounded BAD and I thought that some large animal had one of my cats. SO...I bolted for the stairs and was most of the way across the room before I realized that my left leg was not really running with me....it was somewhere behind me being dragged along. I THINK it was at that point that I may've chuckled and adopted my fastest walk. But here is what YOU all want to know (to heck with Z) My cats are fine. Zion had a large cat claw still embedded in his forehead above his eye and a bloody nose. He also had a tail that was puffed up as big around as his body.

LET THIS BE A LESSON TO YOU...adrenaline seems to override common sense, good judgement and practicality...try not to let it.

I think i Just may be sore tomorrow....

Z

Wow Z, Im glad Zion is ok(even though a claw still embedded sounds soo painful!)Oh and glad to hear your ok as well:wink1:I do hope your not sore tomorrow!

Kevin,

Only because you're a former New Englander....I'll pick on you.

If you had ONLY had one hip replaced like me, I would let you feel guilty, but given what your last 3 months have been like, I am amazed at your progress.

All kidding aside, I'm fortunate that it's working for me at the moment, and I do have that tendency to err on the side of doing too much. And THAT is why my Physical Therapists send me Christmas cards....they get to know me too well.

But I am planning on having the rehab of this hip be the last time I visit them...until I do the next hip. Here's hopin'...

Z

Hi Z
Getting caught up on your thread, looks like your doing great. Glad your cat survived the attack and you survived the sprint to help.
Best of luck to you and Zion.

Yikes....scary the sound of a cat screaming. Glad Zion is ok and hopefully you won't be sore!

Thanks all!

Zion and I are taking the nite off from adventure and having a hot chocolate. Gotta build up our strenght to clean up the snow storm tomorrow! :wink1:

Z

Whew......glad you both are okay. I must say my mental picture of your rescue is a good one, though. It's a good thing you're taking a day off!!!

Wow all you are doing and you are only 5 days ahead of me.

I feel that I could do stairs 2 at a time but I have been listening to my caution and my wife and being really careful.

Good luck on your recovery, I know I would like to push it like you are, but I am not in any hurry, just taking it slow and easy, don't want to break anything.

Sounds like a great routine - your recovery's coming on well.

I'm envious of your using the rower - I still haven't got that range of movement. I'm getting there though.

Glad the cat's OK too.

Got caught up with your progress. Sounds good.

I was rooting for the Pats to win as well. The last 20 years or so I have won a lot of Football Pools with them the deciding game.

I like boats and the water Just not the swimming part of the water. There are big fish down there. I Know this to be true. Never know when one of the Family might take revenge on me for catchin so many of their fellow Sea Kittens.:th_heehee:

Don't talk to me about cats! This is what I got for trying to be nice to a stray this morning!
