THR Wiggle’s post-op hip surgery journey

Does one really need PT?
That's an easy answer, no. PT is unnecessary, walking is all hips really need to heal. I did no formal PT like many here, just walked and have great ROM, I can hike again, scuba dive, everything I've been missing I can do again, and I did my rehab without the pain and swelling inflicted by PT.

Hello. My cellulitis is clearing up slowly. So much less pain. I had a question. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks post-op and I cannot step up steps yet with LTHR. Not even one with left foot yet. Does this come naturally over time or do I need PT to strengthen the muscle? Also, I was wondering if I should massage the incision gently to avoid lumps and scar tissue? Does one really need PT? I would like full range of motion restored if possible? My pain has diminished greatly after the cellulitis was treated with Bactrim. Can one start bike riding this soon? I’m getting ansy being home so much. It’s warm here in FL so I
go to the beach and sit under an umbrella.
  • Steps - don't worry .. It takes time, sometimes as long as 4 months.
  • Massage - not necessary.
  • PT - as long as you are mobile around the home that is enough exercise for now. There's no need to rush to get ROM (Range of Motion) because it can continue to improve for a year, or even much longer, after a knee replacement. There isn't any deadline you have to meet: Myth busting: the "window of opportunity" in TKR
  • Bike = too soon.
  • Beach - Your main job right now is to rest, so your hip can heal. If you can rest at the beach that's OK, but sand makes walking hard.

Thanks everyone. I’m kinda ansey sitting around so much so I guess I may be pushing myself. I initially decided to have my LTHR due to sharp groin pain. I am still having that. I thought it was supposed to disappear? This is disappointing. I’m now 22 days out post-op. Thanks guys. So nice to have your feedback.

I had the same concern about the same time of recovery @wiggle. Why did I do this if the pain wasn't going away? But then it did, and never came back, It's hard to be patient, but your future is bright @wiggle.

If it was joint pain it disappears as we don't have that joint any more. If it's muscle pain it takes time. I still have plenty of muscle pains in the area, they didn't replace them, but I don't have the deep joint pain I had and the sharp bone on bone pains.

Thanks for giving me hope. I think my sharp pain was bone on bone so perhaps it will go away. Happy healing everyone! ☺️

Happy One Month Anniversary!
I hope the pain is easing some since we first heard from you a week ago.
Wishing you peace and comfort as you continue to heal. :)
@wiggle

I was dc from the hospital with 30 Oxycodin
Pills and told to take Tylenol 350 mg. Oxy is prescribed for every 4 hrs. Is this adequate for pain mgt.? I had my THR yesterday and am now home.

Hello wiggle,
Welcome to recovery and congrats on your new hip!
I would suggest you follow the dosing schedule prescribed and assess how it’s working for you. You want to be comfortably mobile and able to sleep, even though it may be in shorter blocks initially. If you find your meds aren’t keeping you comfortably mobile, contact your surgeon or care team to adjust your medication. Ice often, it really helps with the pain. You can ice as often as you like always placing fabric between bare skin and the ice source. You’ll find an article on ICE in the Recovery Guidelines below. Stop back often, we’ll be here if you need us! :)

As you begin healing, please keep in mind that each recovery is unique. While the BoneSmart philosophy successfully works for many, there will be exceptions. Between the recommendations found here, your surgeon's recovery protocol and any physical therapy you may engage in, the key is to find what works best for you.

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary

2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. Here is a week-by-week guide

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask the at each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

@wiggle,
Welcome back to BoneSmart!
Pills and told to take Tylenol 350 mg. Oxy is prescribed for every 4 hrs. Is this adequate for pain mgt.?
Everyone is different, you may or may not have adequate pain management, and may need to ask for a refill of the oxy.

As Layla said, call your surgeon if your pain is not well controlled.

I’m alternating 5 mg of OxyContin with 2/325’s of Tylenol. However my pain is pretty bad and xcept for about 2-3 hrs. when Oxy kicks in. Are there any other meds I could take or perhaps my re mg of Tylenol in between doses of Oxy?

Hello wiggle, I am sorry you’re experiencing pain. Please contact your surgeon’s office and share your dosing schedule with them along with your concerns of inadequate pain control, allowing them to advise. It’s best as they have your medical history and record of any other meds you may be on. I hope you’re able to contact them today, before the weekend.

Please notice that we have moved this post from another members thread to your original recovery thread. Having your recovery information contained in one place will make it easier for you to reflect back on. Please post any updates, questions or concerns about your recovery here.

Wishing you comfort.

I’m 2 days out from surgery, done June 22, 2nd full hip. I had a bum the day of surgery but despite dulcolax, milk of mag, coffee and prune juice, nothing yet. Anything Moreau can be doing?
Also it hurts to elevate leg more than leaving down, should I elevate it anyway? Ty.

Anything more I can be doing?

The painkillers and anesthesia will do that. Make sure you’re staying adequately hydrated with water. Drink, drink, drink. Eat fiber rich foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains. When you feel the urge, go, don’t ignore it. It’s easy to avoid moving about right after surgery. Make sure you’re getting up to walk for five minutes every hour or two.
Following is a article on Constipation from the BoneSmart Library -

If elevating causes more pain than you can tolerate, then limit the time you do it. In all honesty, I didn't elevate a lot. Try to get “toes above nose” as often as you’re able to.

I hope you have a nice day and a peaceful weekend. :)

ICE and more ice for the pain, it did more good for the pain than the pain meds as it helped with swelling too. If I remember correctly my pain meds were every 4 hours and it did fine for me. The pain meds have Tylenol in with them I think you have to watch the total amount of it you take. I didn't have any BM problems but I was taking fibre supplement in the hospital and continued at home.

Hi again. I’m on my 2nd day post-surgery. The area has a getting more painful by the hour. Is this common on data 2-3. When is it the worst, pain-wise? Day 2,3,4, 5?

Hello wiggle,
I‘m sorry you’re in pain. :console2:We each experience pain differently and to varying degrees. Pain is common at two days post op. If you are icing, try icing more frequently and for longer periods of time. It will help with pain and inflammation. Always place fabric between your bare skin and the ice source. Elevation helps also if you can tolerate it. Be sure to take your pain meds on schedule and if you don’t feel your meds are effective enough, I’ll encourage you again to contact your surgeon’s office for advice on your prescribed meds / dosage schedule.
