:hysterical: THIS, Janet, I gotta see!!! :hysterical: It would, however, simplify everything and get you LOTS of attention!!!! :loll:

Margie, when I did water pt, they had the pages laminated so that they did not get wet. They they had a plate stand at the end of one lane to put the papers in---that way, I could read them without touching them. Ke

Hi Janet - any reason why you couldn't wear shorts instead until your recovery was a little more advanced? Nice to see another Michigander here btw :friends: Will be praying for your upcoming surgeries!

Hi Patty, So, are you a transplant to Georgia? My daughter moved to Atlanta for 8 years but is back in Michigan now. I visited a couple times a year, but have only been to Savannah once - loved it! Where in Michigan were you from? I'm Detroit area.

Inspired by the comments on this thread.. A wakeup call..
So.. Today early morning (9.am), I went swimming.. Its week 8 since the TKR..
I havent been swimming for maybe 3, maybe more years.. Bad knees dont y'know!!..what?

Well I did 400 metres at a crawl.. that's the name of the stroke..as well as the speed.. but..overjoyed at the success, I then did half a length of butterfly (I used to do lengths but hey..) then another and another.. This is going so well.. I can do the butterfly kick again (I've lost a bit on the upper body strength but it'll come back)...

I did walking, and jumping up and down and lots of bending the knees stuff with much splashing about. There are lots of other kids there on Sunday morning.. I didnt look out of place and I did a bit of shouting as well..

Anyway.. had a great time.. showed off my scars to anyone who'd look and next time its a full length of butterfly every 3 lengths of crawl.. :yes 4:
I'm on the way back..

thanks guys....spash it on..

Good for you, jkehyam! I hope you didn't over do with the kicking. It must have felt wonderful, as you sound like you've been a swimer. My OS office said I could get into the pool once the incision is dry, but not for swimming, just walking, flexing, stretching. At 8 weeks... You might want to check with the OS and see what they say about kicking the knee. As long as it's not a snap kick, might be okay. Hope you don't end up too sore for all the fun you had!

We are all just big children and when we get into the water, it is play time.

I know exactly how freeing it feels to be weightless after weeks of clumping around on crutches. Suddenly we can move fast and splash one another. Fun time. Also, it is great for the knee. Kelly

@ Kelly- Thanks for the laminating tip. I had them in sheet protectors and highlighted the exercises so I could read them better. Also im so impressed with your recovery. You ROM is awesome it inspires me. Best of luck to you on your most recent surgery for adhesions, I have no doubt you will get the ROM you want. I am more a gym type workout person but I was really impressed with my water workout yesterday.

@ jweyham- Sounds like you had a wonderful day in the pool. Thats awesome. Keep up the good work and enjoy the splashing!

Hey ho Janet... thanks for you concern.. I just never think to do breaststroke..
because that particular leg kick had always hurt my knees!!! and I think my crawl and butterfly kicks are little more than wiggling my toes..

BUT whats an OS office? In the UK, unless something's gone bad you're out on 'parole' after 6 weeks and on your own.. and my consultant said I didnt need to see him again until a year after the op... He's supposed to be giving me a letter clearing me to be fit enough to be coached for skiing and tennis this week.. It's to cover both his and the coaches 'bottoms', not mine! ..

The UK has caught the " Have you fallen over? Then sue someone, no win no fee" disease in spades. Of course I could never say from which country we caught it :th_heehee:.. but we've got it.

regards

I also got into the pool with no restrictions. I think some OS (Orthopedic surgeons) are more controlling and make more rules for their patients. Mine never said anything about when I could drive (after one week) or where I could exercise or how I could do it. I went in for a few checkups with his Physician's assistant and my annual checkups are with him. But, he just feels like his patients have brains and can read the Rehabilitation book by Buglioni and figure things out.

If it does not hurt your knee to swim, that go for it. Especially if you are used to swimming. I do a lot of pool exercise, but mostly I pretend I am running in the deep end of the pool. Kelly

hey ho Kelly.. OS => orthopaedic surgeons.. OK.. I suppose they forgot to put my brain back in.. Seems like your operation went ok??

Anyway..flushed with success at the pool yesterday.. I went to the tennis club and spent an hour banging balls against the wall this morning.. As long as I dont have to move more than a yard or so it's fine.

If forced, I will admit my backhand may not be a elegant as Federer's but, to me its still a thing of beauty, and much better than before because I can now bend my knees.. absolutely no pain just a little fatique.. I'm so pleased.. I think I'll have to go and lie down for a bit!!

I am pretty active and my OS told me to not over do it & if it hurts then don't do it. It is pretty much common sense. I have followed his advice and so far all is good. I might try the running in the deep end that sounds challenging! I have decided to do 3 days in pool and 3 days in gym. Today was gym day. Walked a mile and pedaled 1.75 miles. Did arms, abs, legs & Back! tomorrow is pool day!

Margie

I was surprised that swimming was not so easy at first. I go now
for about a half an hour at a time. even though it looks easy,
go slow. that is my advice.

Margie,

Here is how I do it. I have a belt which goes around your waist that holds you up. (I bought it at a thrift store for $1, but they also carry them at sporting goods stores--I think they are called buoyancy belts).

Then I go into the deep end and "run". I can spring with little steps or run with long strides. I am dripping with sweat sometimes, it is quite a workout. I found this info on a page for runners who are injured. Apparently you can keep your running muscles this way.

There are also lots of sites for water exercises. I use the one on Lance Armstrong's site called LiveStrong. It is a wonderful site, it helps you to keep track of calories and is filled with useful info. They have a section on Aqua Jogging. have fun! Sounds like you are dedicated. Kelly

Kelly, that aqua stuff sounds a lot more energetic than my swimming... I'm more goldfish than marlin..
and I've found my old ski boots.. buried at the back of the garage.. just like I remembered them .. filthy and full of spiders webs? No.. alright, Yes, but comfortable old friends which I havent worn for 20 years at least... found my snowboard boots too.. As soon as the clearance comes from the OS office! I'll be off for a lesson at the snow dome.
Marge
.. this cross training routine your doing.. 6 days alternative gym and pool... sounds like your going for a triathalon.. rest days are important recovery time.. if you feel you need to do some exercise on a recovery day.. sit down till you feel better I always say..

regards to all ..

So I was surprised today that the walk in steps at the pool were gone. I nearly fell into the pool trying to get down the built in steps. Didn't know how I was going to get out, but with some mathmatical calculations as to which knee to lead off with, etc., I got out succesfully with no pushing and pulling assistance from the lifeguard. My knee may not have quite enough bend, but at least I still have some muscles to help me!

Some really good ideas here, thank you. chuckling to myself at the thought of all us Bonesmarties limping down long halls to reach the pool & then finding NO STEPS ..... diving allowed? I guess not!!!!

wehyam, I really hope you throw those old ski boots away. Now is a good time to look for something on sale. Get a softer boot--even a beginner boot is better than those old things from your storage shed!!! I see some people bring old boots in to the ski swap that have mouse nests in them---I just stand there looking for words!! The last time, the man asked me what he could get for them--I just started laughing and could not stop. I had to get another volunteer to help him!! Kelly

Thanks, he was fun, I paint on fabric and then hand and machine quilt it. Kelly
