TKR Veronica's TKR Recovery

How many times a day should I bring icing and elevating? I know I should ice after exercise. Just looking for an average number or after certain activities. Decided to go ahead and take 12 weeks off because I am not ready to go back to work. Scheduled to return on the 2nd of May. Was thinking of going in a few weeks earlier to ease my way back in by doing a couple of hours in the a.m. and then again in the afternoon. Any suggestions?

I don't think there's a set number of times that you should be icing and elevating, because you should do it as often as you can, for as long as you can. So, whenever you are resting, ice and elevate at the same time.

It's a good idea to take about 12 weeks off work and then start back part time if possible, to ease back gradually:
Phased return to work

I had my revision due to a poorly tracking patella. I began losing ROM and had much increased pain as I upped my activity at about the 4 month mark.

Newlybionic how long ago and how are you doing in your recovery?

I have my original TKR in July, 2015 an my revision 2 weeks ago on March 21. I'm doing so much better than I was after first surgery 2 weeks out. It will still need to be seen if I am able to get complete use of my knee after all the healing is done. Only time will tell.

Found your thread and I pray your recovery continues to go well.

I made 3 hour drive to Houston today to visit my friend at MD Anderson. She's so strong! I iced my knee once I made it to her room and then again about 3 hours later. Drove home making 1 stop to stretch. Survived it!

Well done! I'm sure your friend appreciated seeing you.
Can you have a day of rest tomorrow, to allow your knees a day off after that long drive?

You are a good friend to make that trip and I'm very happy it went so well.

I did nothing once home and iced and elevated, however I do have PT today.

10 weeks post op and only at 90 when pushed; feeling depressed today. PT asked could he bend again and I said no after screaming out in pain.

Please, please don't let your PT push on your knee or cause you pain like that.
It's doing things like that to you that have probably caused soft tissue and swelling, thus preventing your knee from bending properly.
Do remember this, from the BoneSmart mantras:
- if it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physiotherapist (PT) - to do it to you
- if your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again

We advise that, because, so often, aggressive, painful treatment like your PT gave you is all that is preventing your knee from bending.

I know and understand the mantra but this PT and my doc are all about numbers and it's so hard when he keeps saying that he's just doing his job. Hate to vent but it's so discouraging.

Yes, Veronica, they may be all about the numbers, but do remember that it's your knee, not theirs. Let them obsess. Just because they are fixated on the numbers, you don't have to be.
You knee would still progress and regain its bend and other function, even if nobody measured your ROM at all.

I know that, because my surgeon doesn't measure or want to know the numbers. He just eyeballs the knee and says "Show me what you can do." That has been his policy for both my knees. They both work beautifully, even though they have never been measured. I have full extension and can bend them to an estimated 125 + degrees. I can do everything I want to with them.
Nobody rushed me. They just let my knee recover. I concentrated on rest, ice, elevation and pain control, and did very little formal exercise.

Veronica, I appreciate your frustration. The BoneSmart mantra goes against what many of us face in PT. I just want to add my personal experience.

By pushing too hard in PT obeying their directives, I had an injury. It has taken WEEKS for this to heal and the pain to stop. I learned the hard way that I should have listened and followed the mantra more. At first, when I was too shy to speak up for myself they were pushing my knee. I would sit silently in tears. After gaining the courage to speak up for myself on this forum, I did speak up. I wish I had done it sooner. Always remember, as Celle has said, it is your knee.

I want to also say, the physical therapist is HIRED by YOU to aid in your recovery. Would you let someone come in your house and make a mess instead of cleaning it? Would you let a mechanic destroy your car instead of fixing it? Would you let a daycare worker harm your child? Would you let a financial planner spend your money on personal items? You see, it is all the same. You have hired these people and direct the outcome of the work/service. I had a hard time speaking up for myself. I wanted to go along to get along. Be strong and just tell them at the next visit that you do not want them to push you to pain.

Pushing to discomfort is ok. When they start to push on your knee, tell them that they can ONLY do it until you tell them to stop. Physical therapists are not gods and many times you are seeing an assistant. Take control of your recovery. You will be happier, your knee will be happier, and believe me, your knee will heal faster and better. Prayers for you to have strength and healing.

How is your dear friend doing? I think of her each time I see your thread.

Timetolive, thank you so much; your words were very much needed. I am going to have a talk with him during my session tomorrow. My friend is still staying positive and just trying to enjoy each day. She makes me feel like such a wimp when I complain about my knee and I think about what she is enduring. Thank you for asking.

this PT and my doc are all about numbers and it's so hard when he keeps saying that he's just doing his job.
They always are but their focus is skewed! Very soon I hope to be joining a research group to dispel this notion and show the benefits of the softly softly approach. For me I wouldn't even GO to PT at all! I refused to do any exercises. My surgeon's practice nurse nagged me about it but I was resolute even though she said she would 'report me to the surgeon'. I told her to please do that as I would love him to know how well I was doing on my own! Don't think she ever did though as he knew nothing about it when I saw him a few weeks later!

Hello all! Knee flexion still at 85-90 range. Extension is -8-12 most times; not sure why it won't go straight or why I have to work on it everyday and don't keep the numbers. SIGH PT had me do a new exercise yesterday; the stair stepper for 5 minutes. I did not have any issues or feel any difference in my knee at all. By this eve ink my knee feels strange; stiffer and sort of pain I've never felt at top of knee, possibly kneecap. I am scheduled to return to work on the 2nd of May. Hoping things continued to get better. Not at all where I thought I would be at 10 weeks.
