TKR Veronica's TKR Recovery

I'm doing okay. Same here with the tight band feeling and having to make my knee bend as it doesn't want to do it naturally when walking. I thought I had made some improvement with my ROM so I asked the PT to measure it yesterday. He said it was 90/-12. I guess it is better as the 90 was achieved on my own with no pushing from PT. going to work Monday and MUA scheduled for the 9th.

Going back to work today. Any pointers on things to do to get my day started. Heel slides, bike, etc. Also I am taking ice packs to work and going to try to prop leg on stool or box or something. Will be sitting at desk most of day; looking for pointers on how often to get up and move around, how often to hold leg bent, straighten, etc.

I think you'll need to get up and walk around at least every hour. You will find you get very stiff with sitting all the time.

Just bend and straighten your leg every now and then while you are sitting down.

On days that you go to work, you don't need to do any other exercises. Work itself (including getting ready, and getting to and from work) will be all the exercise your knee needs.

Make sure you ice and elevate when you get home. Hope it goes well for you at work today !

Thank you for the replies; leg is stiff. Sitting in my car at WalMart as I sent my 14 year old inside with a list of items I need at work. Coffee, snacks, microwaveable lunches, etc. will be elevating and icing once I get home. I was suppose to have PT today but cancelled, as I felt PT and work would be too much for 1st time back. MUA is scheduled for Monday; thinking about cancelling all PT until after that.

After your MUA, you won't be able to work for a while. The MUA will cause some soft tissue damage and you'll need to rest, ice and elevate your knee, and only do very gentle exercise.

Doc has said PT to begin next day after MUA and possibly 2-3 days off work

Well I did cancel all PT for the week as I am working from 10-3 every day! Talked with doc today and I will have PT same day as MUA. Said there will be a nerve block in knee as well as the general anesthesia and then PT 3 times a week. Was not as stiff today as yesterday as I did get up from desk more often to walk. Copier, kitchen, practically everything is at least 10+ feet from my office. Need to ice more while I'm working, I think that will help a lot. Gonna figure this thing out soon. Me, my mom and daughter are gonna drive to Houston on Sunday after church and stay at a hotel near the hospital; procedure is early Monday morning. Then will have to make 3 hour trip to have therapy the same afternoon. Will definitely keep you guys posted.
My best friend lost her battle to ovarian cancer last night, but she has received her crown. :prayer:

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. We will all be reunited again.

Good luck with the MUA. I hope it all goes well for you.

You shouldn't do that. It's just crazy.
You have to have an anaesthetic for the MUA and your knee will be wounded again. You'll need to rest afterwards. The last thing you or your knee need is to travel for 3 hours and then have PT.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend.

A week is absolutely no good! And if you're at work and work involves a lot of walking, then you don't need PT/exercises anyway! The MUA will do you little or no good because what you need is LESS EXERCISING! Or preferably no exercising at all!

Please take the advice given here. Don't let anyone push you into doing more than you can right now. Your knee has gone through alot and doesn't need to be beat up anymore right now.

So sorry to hear about your friend passing. Remember the happy times you had together.

@vonjpo,
Good luck on Monday - I hope that goes really well for you. But boy, that's far to have to drive! I was very close to having one scheduled but have now gotten to and a bit beyond 90 degrees and we are deciding every two weeks how to go. In some ways I wish I'd just done it already - it's hard to wake up every day for seven months and start dealing with pain and trying to use my knee. Sounds like a good idea to quit PT until then though. My doctor feels that if you are motivated and keep moving and doing gentle stretching, lots of PT is not as needed. I'll be waiting to hear how it goes.

Thank you everyone and I am giving consideration to all of your suggestions. The PT, after MUA, is usual protocol as far as I have been researching on line. The 3 hour drive is because that's how far I live away from my doctor. I have read where some have aggressive PT 5 days a week for 2 weeks following MUA; so I have concluded that this is a happy medium for having the PT 3 times a week and I won't allow PT to have me in pain. I have learned that all recoveries are different; not only in people, but in surgeries done on the same person. I am praying that the MUA is a step toward better ROM and that it's the next step forward in my healing process. I am really grateful for this forum and all who contribute to it. I will be updating on Monday after procedure and then again after PT.

I am doing the programs and a memorial DVD for my friend's service. Just remembering our journey together has me smiling, laughing, and crying. I have never been on a plane without her being on it with me. A trip to Jamaica and 2 trips to Vegas! We are only 5 days apart with her being the oldest, and she often reminded me of that. :heehee:

Have a blessed day everyone!

Hello all! MUA done, PT done. Waiting on tomorrow to see how knee feels. He did a nerve block so once it wears off I'll know better how it is. Was able to ride bike at PT with seat one level closer. PT wanted to stretch me with me on my stomach; I told him no. He didn't push the issue, but right away I knew he was not pleased as he gave me the speech about having to keep pushing as to not lose the motion. I told him I understand but the knee is obviously swollen so pushing not gonna help as bend would be less.

Glad the MUA is behind you, and that you slowed the PT down. Heel slides will help you keep and increase your motion after the swelling goes down. Heel slides and how to do them , a few times a day.
