Upstater on striking a balance?-- I read somewhere here yesterday somebody quoting something they had read on here some other time--"Only do half what you feel like you're able to do". Also, there is the tried and true trial and error method........
I was thinking you wear the brace over pants-- but I see not. So, ok, you'll head for the pants department! LOL

Upstater. Glad to hear you are not doing wall to wall rugs. I would tip over. It sounds like you are doing as much as you can, given the brace. I was told to try to walk a bit every hour, and it sounds like you are doing at least that.

LeeApril26 I probably get up every hour or so. I do understand the brace keeps me from breaking the 90 degree rule but its kind of comical too. From just above my knee to my ankle it sure has a lot of people asking about my knee surgery. Question...I still have swelling...but it's my foot. Do I ice my foot or hip?

@zauberflote Ok. I guess I will continue to become proficient it doing very little. My husband has banned me from upstairs while he is at work. The brace makes descending stairs tricky. So that eliminates half the housework. He has been great though. I know being a caretaker gets old after a while.

Josephine re: swelling I feel the swelling in my foot. Logically hip is causing this. Do I ice hip or foot?

Upstater I believe you should elevate the foot and ice the hip. Somewhere I read here on one of the threads not to ice the ankle. Swelling is normal. One thing you might want to do is at the very right top section of this thread you will see your name, there will be a drop down and where it says signature, you can put you information simalar to what I have. Include surgery date, which hip, what approach you had, reason for the brace. All this imformation in your signature will help Josephine or anyone else in answering your questions.

Hi Upstater... Ice both.. That way you have both areas covered :)Jo is away for a few days well earned break and to go to an ortho conference... Always learning is our Jo :)

Swelling is improving just like everyone said. I don't ice much but I elevate whenever I sit. Nine more days with the brace! I need to sleep any way but on my back! It's giving me a backache. Hopefully only 9 more nights. I take Tylenol only if I know I'm going shopping or doing a lot of walking. Still using cane at 7 weeks tomorrow. I feel the brace is contributing to the cane dependency.

Glad you're swelling is improving (as in going down) and you're behaving yourself Upstater! Just think of that cane as your temporary assistant -- don't worry about the why!
He has been great though. I know being a caretaker gets old after a while.
I feel the same way about my fabulous 'caretaker'... I wish I could think of some great gift for him when I'm back on two hips again... (Well I DO know what he would just LOVE from me... hahaha - 'patience dear' I keep telling him :heehee: )

SeaSiren You are way too funny. But patience is the word of the house here, ha ha. Mine did go overnight to a fishing tournament which he confessed he was thinking of cancelling. I told him people live alone and have this surgery, and I was fine. I had to promise not to go upstairs. And I didn't. He still wants to fetch everything and I keep telling him I NEED to walk. He admitted he couldn't go through what I did. Yes, he's right! He would never follow the restrictions. We are opposite in that respect. The cane is my temorary assistant, okay. Went to Lowes and actually stood at the checkout and realized I wasn't standing there in agony, like before the surgery. Wow. My other leg is sore and I hope it gets happier when it doesn't have to work extra hard like it is now. How are you doing? Sleeping?

I think a lot of us have seen their husbands stand up to the mark during our surgery and recovery and what a blessing they have been. My poor 'old man' has had to look after me 3 times in 14 months for major surgery, last April I had a back fusion and now 2 new hips, I'm so lucky to have him take such good care of me.
It's really good news that you were able to stand at the checkout without pain, the next step would be for it to become just a natural everyday thing and it won't be too long. :)

Josephine Thank you. I find the activity progression in the library to be extremely helpful. There have been times, when reading posts from others that I would begin to feel lazy. I have the brace....which keeps me from doing a lot of things. But when I refer to the library I am right on schedule. I have been forced to rest. Maybe the brace is a good thing for me. The constant reminder that I had serious surgery.

It is really important when reading other members progress to remember it is their recovery journey. You are the only one who can travel your recovery.

I am pleased that you are finding the articles in the library provided by Jo to be a good guide. Jo's experience is backed by many years in her profession. I followed her guidance to the letter and have benefited so much from it. :)

Question: regarding stairs, when were you able to navigate stairs normally (vs two feet per step)? With the brace I am forced to climb like a toddler due to the knee not bending. Just curious what other's experience has been.

It really shouldn't take more than 2 to 3 weeks for you to be able to do steps normally while holding on to the hand rail. It may take a few more weeks to bound up and down hands free. Being in the brace won't hold you up too much. There's a lot of healing taking place while you're stuck in it---so it may actually be a bit easier for you once you're out of it.
