Bilateral THR Twice as Nice - JennyLynne's recovery

Hi @JennyLynne
Two weeks out!:ok:
All of this recovery business gets old quick...my lower back gave me trouble too.
As I got more mobile, things got better.
When I was more stable on my feet, I found that raising my arms above my head when I first got up felt good to my back...
Keep the faith, friend.
Hope this week is a good week!

Two weeks... feels longer and shorter, depending on the moment. But all in all, I’m pleased with my progress. See the doc tomorrow- first time out of the house!

Today is my first day all alone, like a big girl, haha. Feel confident enough to handle the stairs for lunch... though haven’t considered the challenge of getting the food from fridge to counter to table. I’m pretty sure I could one-crutch a little bit.

Slept surprisingly well given the back pain and weird right leg twitches (nerves?). However... I have the most insane zombie apocalypse dreams- thanks, Game Of Thrones!! [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Good luck at your two week appointment. Hope it is reassuring. Yes to zombie apocalypse dreams! Had them too. Must be one of the drugs. Thought about keeping notes so I could write some kind of science fiction thriller.

That fear will pass @JennyLynne because one day you will just do the stairs without realising you hadn’t thought about it! Early days yet... I’ve had back pain too... sleeping on my back is a killer!!
Hope your ‘Home Alone’ day is going well... snuggle up & rest!
Good luck got your first outing & 2 week check... you’ve done so very well... doc will be amazed [emoji3590]

Hope you are enjoying your quiet day. Don't forget to do a checklist before you head downstairs, like your phone and medications - go pee before you head down there, etc.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that there is food in the fridge for you when you get there! :heehee:

@Carriemay60 that is a good idea- id definitely forget something!!

My husband brought me some toast and coffee before he left, and also brought a little cooler bag. I just opened it- yogurt, fruit, carrots and hummus. So sweet, my own little snack bag [emoji173]️

Hoping your first day alone goes smoothly. We'll be here to keep you company if you get bored.
How sweet of hubs to bring you breakfast and a care package.

Let us know how your first experience of navigating the stairs and prepping your lunch while home alone goes. We need to know you made it safely back to bed.
Happy Monday, Jenny!
@JennyLynne

@Layla reporting back!! Went downstairs and back up again!! Still an exhausting exercise, climbing the stairs. Plan to do again for dinner.

I will say... getting around the kitchen on crutches is not easy. I am not ready for one crutch, that is clear!

Happy to hear you made it down and back up safely! So you have a walker that has a seat you could transfer a plate on? Crutches are a pain in the kitchen! I use my wheelchair in the kitchen with a big cutting board on my lap to putz at dinner prep and like a table if home alone. Of course most hippies don't have one but another idea is an office chair on wheels

@Carriemay60 I don’t have a tray. Also, I use one crutch to do the stairs and keep the second one downstairs and leave the walker upstairs. Maybe not the best set-up. Need to think it through

Oh I have ice packs on most of the day!! Managed a second trip down for dinner. Helped my son with his homework and bedtime, which felt nice and normal.

Doc appt this morning. First time out. Thinking staples out too? I’m super anxious!!!!!

Your hubby sounds so sweet. Love that he packed you a snack cooler. Now that is love! We picked up a second walker at a thrift shop. Maybe a friend can look for you. It was 10$. That way I have one on each floor. Hope you have a good appointment with OS. You are doing remarkably well! ❤️

Maybe your hubby or someone could pick up a second walker at a nearby thrift store. They often have them there and it would be better than hobbling with one crutch. Then you could have a walker down and one upstairs. Our local rescue squad keeps a huge supple of medical equipment on hand for anyone to borrow as needed at no charge. Maybe there is a place near you like that. I didn’t know about it but had a PT that came to house first week and she told us about it. Call your GP or a PT facility or even Office of Aging to ask where you can find one to use. It isn’t good to walk with a bad gait in my opinion but then I’m not a medical person. I’d worry I’d adversely affect something I guess. Sending positive healing wishes your way....

In Canada, the Red Cross had something similar to what @GrannyC is describing for loaners. I completely forgot we did some of that last time!

Awesome job on the steps! I feel there are so many opportunities for gratitude during THR recovery.
A few years ago, you would never have considered the great feeling of accomplishment you'd get in climbing or descending stairs. You're doing great, Jenny! I think recovery begins to feel like it's moving more quickly when you're engaging in normal activity again. Meals downstairs with the family, helping your son with his homework, watching a movie together, getting out of the house etc.

Wishing you the all the best at your appt today. I'm sure you'll get a good report and I think you'll love getting out of the house. I know I did the first time. It feels great to be amongst the living again.
Let us know how the appt goes. Safe travels to and from.
@JennyLynne

Excellent doc appt! Xrays look “perfect”!!

Staples out and it wasnt bad (especially when compared to how awful it was with me knee). Incisions look good.

Cleared to start working from home next week and drive if I feel I can.

Wants me to do outpatient PT once the home PT is done, and I’m fine with that. I really like the place I worked with last time.

And now.... I need to lay down!!!!
