Well that facility was a little shocking. It was very beautiful, couldn't ask for more, immaculately clean, coffee shops, gift shops, indoor pool, pond fountains, 2 story fireside library, garden paths, solarium, theater! and more. My husband is sold on it, near home and very swank. The rehab is called Care Unit Transitional Care. All of the people there, 44 beds, were very very elderly and not functioning at all. I double checked with them while on the tour and asked if they actually get knee replacement patients or not. The lady touring really didn't know but thought so. I will be talking to another lady in charge Monday. If I was at that stage in my life it would be a very comforting place that I would be lucky ot be in long term. But if I may be blunt, it seemed to me the only transition going on there was from earth to heaven...

:skep: yes, check it out further to make sure they get tkrs and have PTs

The representative said that they do TKN and will put me on the schedule to see if there are openings. But they are a long term (end of life) facility. Interesting.

On another note, I'm trying to schedule some dental work, but wondering about the need for the antibiotics. If I am not having the TKN till September what sense does it make to use antibiotics now? Do the bacteria linger that long? I guess I am not very medially savvy. Josephine:
Josephine; (I forgot how to do that tagging so I did it both ways =/

It doesn't make any sense and you don't have to have them!

To tag is just like Twitter and @ and then the persons name. Nothing more.

Ok thanks, that's what I thought. Though I just saw on "The Doctors" just a minute ago how one lady got her teeth done and it triggered a landslide of bacteria that attacked her heart valve and stopped her heart. They put in a tiny machine that pumped the blood inside her heart and saved her life. yikes. Who knew dental work was so scary.

She had probably had rheumatic fever as a child or something similar. Such people can get a "toxic shock" from the quantity of bacteria dumped into their system which immediately attack the heart. That's not the kind of thing that happens to joint replacement patients! You should read this Infection: peri-prosthetic infection - also known as late onset infection

Thanks, I will read it. I am interested in knowing as much as I can.

Oh My Gosh. I didn't keep ahead of the pain today because I had no where to go and nothing to get done today. Just got up and wow. Note to self, your knees do hurt, they are shot, you will be getting this TKN, this is not a dream, keep ahead of the pain!

Ouch! Hang in there, and listen to your own advice, your head knows what to do, now to train your body to obey...

Thanks BJ. It sounds like you are doing well, finally resting and getting enough sleep?

Well, I had one good night of sleep, but am generally getting 5 1/2 hours and do notvfind that nearly adequate.

I ran out of Ibuprofen so took some Naproxen and I really don't like it. It does't cut the pain at all. So now I have to wait for it to run out of my system before I use the new Ibbuprofen I picked up with the the tylenol. I decided to get a shot in my left knee, it's been really bad lately. The right knee had a synvistic and doesn't hurt nearly as much. So maybe a shot would help since it's going to be a while before surgery. Help me make it through. I will call Mayo and ask about but I don't think I will go all the way down there to get the shot. My girlfriend's doctor was nice, though he didn't find the kneecap issue. But he said he does shots really painlessly.

Quads going crazy today. Today I was called into a church to do Deaf Interpreting (ASL). I had a tall stool and I used that from time to time and did a pretty good job of standing. I'm usually seated at most churches but this one was just the stool. The rest of the day today I was so tired and my quads were trembling. Didn't really hurt but was very sore like exercise. I have been doing my quads exercise so I am surprised at this trembling and soreness.

Yay! I now have my recliner on 6 x 6" posts, elevated so I can easily get in and out. My husband had a track routered out to fit the recliner feet and tacked it down. We were thinking of getting one of those powered lift chairs but I don't think I will need one now. With that and the elevated toilet seat I feel like my old self again. Wow what a difference! I will try to attach a photo that shows the foot. Now if I were really my old self I would be painting this and making it perfect, but not yet.

Looks really good and gets the job done---and why paint? after you recover, you won't need them anymore.

Yeah!

I don't know I think that I will still use it after I'm healed. This chair has always been a little tooo low for me. My Mom used to complain about it and she was 5'1". Or maybe a new chair will still be in my future, just not the lift one. But it's soooo comfortable, perfect for sleeping and has nursed me through my elbow surgery years ago.

Well, then, by all means paint to your heart's content! Nothing beats a really comfy chair not even a really comfy bed.

Ha ha, yes. I may.

Talked to my PT today. She has seen me through my foot operation in 2005 and many years of PT at her office to get that settled down. She went through my exercises and encouraged me to get back in the pool. She told me to walk as much as I can and exercise, but not to the point of getting sore and swollen because that only makes it worse. Sounds like what I've heard here so I will be comfortable with her. I gave up the pool earlier this year because walking from the parking lot to the pool was just too much. But now I think that since I am staying on top of the pain I will try again. She also wants me to get a stationary bike, and not use my floor pedal one because it doesn't give me enough rotation. That might be hard. We'll see.
So much to do.

KayeKaye, you need to look for a stand alone short term inpatient physical rehabilitation facility. Sometimes this could be a separate unit on the premises with a residential facility. Don't go to a nursing home. You won't be happy and the staff won't know what to do with you. Ask your hospital for a list and make some calls. A lot of that pretty stuff is for the families of residents. And make sure you visit and talk to the actual physical therapy room and therapists. Ask what the average stay is. It should be three weeks rather than three years.

Thank you Janet. I'm not getting too far on that front. They all seem to be nursing home/rehab in the same building. My hospital is the Mayo clinic in Rochester but I don't want to stay down there. So I will have to call some other hospitals up here in the Twin Cities. But reading through some of the patients in England where they usually don't even go to rehab, it makes me wonder. I suppose if I do both knees it would be more helpful to go somewhere. Back to the hunt!
