For me, it was always one at a time. I wanted to make sure that I got the best possible outcome. I wanted one leg completely healed so that I could ski that winter and ditto the next year. But make the decision that works for you. K

I just love all the advice and all the stories. Thanks so much. It's so much to think about after working so long on finding out what was wrong. The surgeon thought one at a time 6 months apart was best but said it was totally my decision. He did my friends knees both at the same time, she stayed at Mayo then hopped a plane and went to her daughters for rehab and it turned out great. I'm so scared, and such a chicken about surgery I just know I would hate doing it twice, knowing what was to come. With my foot surgery I had to stay off it for 12 weeks and it was very painful for a long time, though it was only one foot. So I feel I am a bit prepared for the logistics. But first things first, I have to do the root canal which I hate just about as much!

The root canal doesn't hurt one bit. Just make sure that they give you as much novacaine they can, and then some. I was very afraid, had heard every horror story, but it was nothing at all. I promise you that it was nothing and you won't feel a thing. I PROMISE.

I agree--everyone always said root canal was sooooo bad. I never had any trouble--and of course once they've removed the root which contains the nerve---no pain!

Yeah it's a root canal gone wrong, I think they are just going to pull it now. And- the other side needs a root canal too. yuk. I hate the dentist and he knows it, he works so hard to be nice to me. I feel sorry for him to have to put up with me, but we know people in common and he is very nice..

Well, see? That is just what I went through! I just had a root canal 2 days before Christmas and it failed. The tooth cracked and I need to have it extracted. I got a bone graft done at the same time and will eventually have an implant. The oral surgeon said to wait at least 6th months, so that bone is healed, sturdy and stable. I'm really glad that nobody can notice it, even if I laugh and smile big. That, too, was fine. I went to recital dress rehearsal right from the procedure and went to a dance recital 2 days later. After the recital we went out for Mexican food and I had steak fajitas. I am a nervous nellie when it comes to the dentist, too. You will do great with the extraction and root canal. So much it going on for you right now and you are handling things incredibly well.

Yes I have MS. I found out in 1999 finally. Symptoms went back to 1997 though. The heat is the number one killer for me! If I can avoid getting overheated, mine stays in remission!

Dentist said to wait 6 months? For the knee surgery? I have to find that out. I thought it would be a couple weeks or months. yikes.

OH NO! The oral surgeon said to wait for the dental implant. He, in fact, was extremely excited about my upcoming surgery. He told me that his wife had BTKR at Dartmouth. I asked about her recover. He told me that she went to rehab for 3 weeks and then home for 3 weeks. he said at 6 weeks she went back to work. She is a nurse. He told me that she was happy and healthy. Her surgery was in September 2011.

Had a dream I was *running* in the town square park and when I got to the gazebo I jumped up the three steps with ease. The dream continued on in it's pleasant picnic theme. Then I woke up. Was so confused, had to realize I couldn't stand without my cane and my shoes on. Oh **** it was just a dream. Then a friend called and wanted to go to the beach by her house. I called the park and rec office and was told the handicap parking lot was 1,000! feet from the beach with no drop off area any closer. So frustrated. Can't go, I have not been able to walk a block for a long time. Parks and rec department is the most insensitive to handicapped and disabled people. I heard of one woman suing them for not allowing her motorized wheel chair on the trails!


I've read about the post op depression as standard, but what about the pre op depression? I am really struggling with all the planning and scheduling –and fear.

Me too, pre-op was far worse than post-op, I was just a big girls blouse. No real post-op depression at all - it was bad at times but there is no dread of what's to come.

LOL thanks Roy. The dread of what's to come is exactly what I am going through. I see others talking about getting the jitters but his is freakin me out man. Well at least I know now I'm not alone.

I'm going to tour the rehab facility tomorrow. It's a nice place with one of my favorite restaurants. Didn't even know that they had rehab there. It has senior living homes and apartments connected and very swank.
