MUA Tigz's Lessons in Patience

Went for a follow-up with the OS today. It's 24 weeks since my surgery, 15 weeks since my MUA, we'll just call it six months since my surgery. :)

He was quite pleased. My ROM was 125, my extension 0. He said I'll probably continue to get additional ROM in small increments. He said to remember I had two major surgical procedures in less than 12 weeks and I was still healing from the trauma of that combination. That's when I interjected and asked for an extension of the temporary handicap parking, so he gave me three more months. :) Was pleased with the little bit of swelling that I have, and happy with my activity level between working and walking. I told him the pain behind the knee was at a level of just annoying at night now. He attributed most of that to the hamstrings. He said the clicking was normal and in most patients it goes away in time. He's not worried about the quad lag, said to do the exercises PT had recommended no more than three times a week, it would come in time.

I asked him again about the number of MUAs he does in a year, and he said in the previous five years he had done two, and from January to July of this year he'd done five. He went back and reviewed all those cases as he was wondering why he has had such an unusually high rate of MUAs this year but found nothing of significance in the surgical notes except that three of us had history of previous knee surgery.

ETA I just commented in Gilina's thread:

You make me want to go edit my OS update from today... I still need to hold on with one hand both up and down stairs and yes, the knee is still boss with a bit of stiffness and discomfort still there in the the background, for lack of a better way to describe it.

That's a great report from your follow-op appointment! :yes!::happydance::yay:

Your surgeon sounds like a sensible chap.

The difference in his MUAs this year could just be the scatter effect of statistics. Previous knee surgery could have affected outcomes too, of course.
My OS did no MUAs in 2013 and 2014 and has done none so far this year.

You can say that again @Kansas Teacher ... and we still have to get outta the tunnel (the light at the end is definitely very bright!). :D

Glad to read your report @tigz. I'll be 4 months out on the 22nd and I was feeling a bit down and out. I'm still having some pain but I'm trying so hard to be positive. I even posted the pros and cons of what I can and can't do on my thread. The pain behind my knee is more than annoying. Did your Dr ever say what causes it? I'm trying so hard to look on the bright side, but some days it is so hard. Glad to hear you are doing so well.

I think work keeps me from thinking too much about the knee @momweb else I'd probably be feeling the same. He pretty much blamed it on still tight hamstrings because my knee had been at 15 degrees prior to surgery for who knows how long.

I am still pretty tired out at the end of the day. If I keep moving I can accomplish a couple of things but if I sit down on the couch after dinner for long I'm done for the evening or maybe I should just say night.

What are you taking for the pain?

@tigz Nothing from the OS. During the day I don't need anything. I'm too busy to let any discomfort bother me. I was given Neurontin for night since the surgeon thought some of the pain was nerve related. I stopped it after 7 days due to awful side effects. Since the Dr. office never called me back on that issue, I just stopped cold turkey. I've tried Tramodol, Tylenol, Tylenol PM....none really helped at all at night. The only medication that even helps remotely is Vicodin. My PC prescribed that before surgery due to arthritis pain. I used to take one each night so I could sleep. Looks like I might have to go back to taking it nightly.

I know what you're going through....I even had a muscle relaxant that did nothing! Mine has just slowly gotten better. I know my MUA aggravated it because it has gotten much better before the MUA, and came back to haunt me! @momweb

Now that the weather's turned cooler I'm back to my jeans when not working. Ugh, I hate the feeling at the very top of my knee. My 'curlicue' scar is a bit longer at the top and bottom than most scars, the reason for that, my OS said, was the need to start / end in healthy tissue above and below the scar tissue from my previous surgery. That top part of the scar does not like the jeans rubbing against the area. It's a very itchy sort of feeling, and while these aren't skinny jeans, they are tight enough around the knee that I couldn't wear even one of my old cloth sleeves.

I suppose I could just wear my work scrub pants all the time?

I loved my sleep pants and wore them all three months I was home and even when I returned to teaching. Three days a week I had to go straight to PT from school, so I just threw a nice cardigan on over the gray sleep pants and it didn't look too bad. I honestly miss the days of wearing those to work! Maybe people were being kind, but everyone said they looked good. I had 4 pair of gray ones,2 red and a navy pair made of a stretchy knit fabric (Eddie Bauer) I still have them and wear them around the house and even to the movies the other night. It was quite a while till I could tolerate jeans.

Karri I tend to wear capri length stretchy pants until I have to leave the house and take the jeans off as soon as I know I'm in for the night. I guess the jeans will feel normal over the knee one of these days!

Hey at least it's improved somewhat... I remember in the beginning I didn't want anything over the knee. I used to roll the left leg of the capris up over the knee unless I was going out. :)

My dad was like that. Which was good because he had his knee done in the summer. I had a Silverlon band aid on my knee for two weeks. So I wondered if that helped me to not be as sensitive to anything touching. My pants would literally stretch over the knee, but I was always so cold I only stretched them over when PT or the OS needed to see the knee.
With it getting colder you should get some nice sweatpants that won't bother your incision.

I wore sweat pants, or loose jeans to keep pressure off my knee. Good news is, it only gets better with time.

Hi. Finally getting around to catching up with some threads. You sound like you're doing pretty well, itchy-jean-knee notwithstanding! Do you still wear your knee support? It was you that inspired me to try one and, my goodness, it has helped me so much! Even when I am not wearing it now I think I walk better (almost normally) and it gives me so much confidence. I think you're right about work - it definitely takes the focus away from the knee and - in my case, at least - stops me obsessing about it all the time. We are getting there - can you believe it? I'm at 16 weeks today - the difference in the last 4 weeks is very noticeable. So good to read your updates. Keep going, my nekkid knee friend!

I definitely need to invest in some new sweat pants... unfortunately I can't get away with wearing them to work!

@Raffs! Where have you been?!? (Will check on that shortly). I do still wear a sleeve to work (when I take it off I do have indents so I know there is still a bit of swelling it's helping me with), but definitely have two nekkid knees the rest of the time. :D

Personally I think I have to look back further than a week to really realize how much improvement I've had and then I think WOW! Definitely is quite the journey.

Glad to hear you can see your progress :egypdance:.
Maybe you can find some upscale sweats, Hanes just does not cut it for work.

Oh most definitely @Pumpkln. I just need 'em for out and about, not work. Even without the sleeve the scrub pants I wear for work are loose, and don't chaff the front of the knee at all.

It's been six months since my surgery. Steps still require a hand going up and down. The SLR lag is still there, but improved. Am still using my little pedals daily, but other than that the exercise comes from walking as I can and daily living. :) For the most part sleep is good... without help.

I still have some mild stiffness now and again, and the ache behind the knee is finally gone (YAY!). Does it feel like a normal knee? Maybe, if I call it a new normal. Still waiting for a full day of not realizing it's "there". Hasn't happened yet.

That's a lot of 'stills' up there! :D

Today's my dad's funeral at Arlington, seven'ish months after he died. Closure! Finally! (There's some family issues that have come up in settling the estate so I'm looking forward and not looking forward this afternoon, if you know what I mean.)

Julie

I hope it's a good afternoon for you. I'm grateful for your dad's service and hope this provides you closure and comfort.
