MUA Tigz's Lessons in Patience

I'll sit on the carpet in the family room with my foot on a brick my daughter painted long ago....sometimes icing, sometimes not. This leg was at +15 extension prior to surgery, it was down to +7 before the MUA and jumped over +10 afterwards. I think the therapists are a bit mystified how I never complain when they stretch and hold me to O, but I can't seem to get there myself. I also stretch my leg on the arm of a love seat after rocking in a glider rocker. I don't like messing with the extension exercises in the evening because I think it reflects on the amount of pain I have during the night on the back of my leg.

Loved the book! The movie promises to be very good. :-)

The pain in the back of my knee hung on for a while too. I think you're doing all the right things.

@tigz , I wonder if a good massage to loosen everything up would help. If you could get someone to do a therapeutic massage on your hamstring, it seems like it might help….

That sounds like a good idea, Roxie. I wonder if the PT office knows of anyone who sits therapeutic massage?

Just read your thread from start to finish. You've been on a pretty eventful journey so far! Hope that things continue to improve for you.

You could ask @tigz . I honestly just googled "therapeutic massage" and looked at online references before I went. I figured I didn't have to go back if I didn't like her but I did.

I is at the beach. Actually went down to the ocean yesterday, holding on to hubby until I got to the water. I don't do good "off road"as I like to call it. ;-) I haven't been a beach bunny in ages anyway. At least I had reason to get out of bed when the back of my knee woke me up the last two mornings. Gorgeous sunrises! Been spending my time reading, enjoying the view from the balcony, walking, with one visit to the Boardwalk (we are in Ocean city, MD), and EATING. A lot of the latter. ;-)

Finishing up PT this week. I told her last week this Friday would be my last visit. Still have a bit of quad weakness, SLR lag but they would keep me there forever probably if I let them. I said they could take their pick - I either graduate or drop out.:-D Next week I return to eight hour work shifts and don't need the hassle of PT.

I still have swelling on the top of the knee, and too much time on my feet will increase the swelling, so I'm still occasionally icing.

Never did get a script for anything else to help with my sleep. I feel it in the back of the knee when I roll from one side to another. It gets tight when my leg bends while I sleep, I'll lay on my back and feel it loosen and the back of the knee will meet the mattress, then roll the other way and fall back to sleep.

Still working on those extension exercises when I can.

I used my cane to walk in the soft sand, but didn't need it at all down by the water. Have fun!

Back from the beach last night as hubby had to see a man about a fire engine today (long story), and guess what? I graduated from PT today! What a long haul it's been, with a brief break before the MUA. I just double checked my calendar... I started outpatient PT May 19! I cancelled my Friday appointment. Originally I was planning to buy/make something (cookies?) for Friday. Have to think about the extra effort now. :-)

She was pleased with my progress, 5 - 119, and she got me to 0 - 126,without any pain. Told me to keep working on the quad exercises. :-)

Roxie today is six weeks from the MUA. I think I've been healing from that. Still have that swelling at the top of the knee. Did the massage help with that for you?

It helped but eventually came back, although not as much as before. I still have some swelling at the top too although stiffness is much improved. I'm thinking about getting another massage.

Yay! Those are some great numbers! Your patience paid off! took chocolates for the whole PT group as there were assistants who worked with me also.

Debating a run for www.bergercookies.com tomorrow to drop off. People die for those things around here. ;)

Excellent group of therapists and techs in the office. You get to know them quite well when you're there that often! I hadn't seen the morning receptionist in ages and she teased me and asked if I was sure I'd had a knee replacement. :) She was at lunch when I left today.

Those look delicious! I live a mile from a chocolate store and have to pass it to go or leave my home! It takes real will power! I do stop when I have gifts to give, but I swam with the owners and they love to give me samples. Chocolate covered bacon, chocolate covered cheese curls...

Great numbers! So pleased to hear you're doing well and now have a few extra hours in your week!

Thanks @Raffs!

I took the PT group cookies from a small local grocery store. The head PT lady said what are you doing back? We gave you a t-shirt yesterday. To which I responded I'm bringing you cookies...And they all came out of the woodwork. Very appreciative to those folks.

(Gah... I wish the stupid phone would choose the word I want and not a replacement! ;) )

I have a question regarding icing for anyone four months or more out that may be reading this. I start back tomorrow at work with my eight hour shifts and figure I'll be icing at least at lunch, if not on a break, as I'm up and down on my feet a lot at work (hospital lab). When I'm off I still tend to ice a couple times in the course of the day. When did anyone reading this :-) stop icing on a regular basis and go to more an as needed basis? I realize everyone's different, but just taking my own impartial survey. :-)
