Revision TKR Third TKR Replacement needed

Those are all the names I have. Getting a good revision surgeon can be a bit of a challenge when you're not located in a large city or a university town. That's usually where the best ones practice. They just aren't out in the smaller clinics. So, you're going to have to make a choice of whether it's worth a drive to see someone with experience in revisions or take a chance on someone more local. Of course, I don't know your personal situation, but if it was me, I'd be planning to drive. We have lots of members who do this and it can work out just fine.

I saw an OS today for a revision consultation. In a nutshell he told me there is no guarantee that my pain and instability will go away after another revision. The practice will not prescribe additional pain meds. I understand this as there are so many people getting the meds and abusing them these days. It was suggested that I see my GP to get meds. He mentioned the bone scans can’t give him a true picture of what is going on. The original OS said my first implant crumbled when he removed it out and scan showed it was loose in one place.
Today’s OS also suggested I see his former colleague... the original OS/Revision surgeon. I will probably see him as well as take the trip to see OS on Jamie’s list three hours away from my home as my family has a small cabin near his office.
Exercises today’s OS recommended are of the non weight bearing quad strengthening type. The practice never administers cortisone shot as the end result may be infection. The office provided the bone scan results and contact info for my previous OS (he left the practice two days after revision #1).
I will also see a second OS from Jamie’s list.
BTW @Jamie Winston-Salem is a medical university/college city. My former OS has taught there for many years.

The OS says my ROM is fine and everything looks fine on X-rays and from watching me stand. The previous OS told my DH and me he installed the “Mac Daddy”, the same model they use on the athletes! [emoji22][emoji22][emoji22]. I guess I need another “Mac daddy” with extra gorilla glue.

A bit of clarification for anyone who reads this.....the "implant" wouldn't have crumbled itself as it is metal and for it to disintegrate would be a HUGE implant failure. This is something that just doesn't occur. What the surgeon was likely implying was that the bone surrounding the implant was damaged to the point that it had lost its integrity. This is what happens when an implant loosens and the bone closest to the implant dies back. Many times this is the result of the surgical procedure not being done properly. The cement (it's not really "glue") must be applied at a specific point in its hardening process so that it gets pushed into the porous bone to harden and lock the implant firmly in place.

Please see this article from the BoneSmart Library for more details on the process. Note that even though the article is written about hip joints, the same applies to knees.

@Jamie, my DH clarified the surgeon’s statement. The bonding/bone crumbled and not the implant. He had no trouble removing it. Sorry. Thanks for the post.

Hope this is OK to post. Happy birthday, mom. She had her TKR done on her other knee two years ago at age 84 and is doing fantastic with her new knees.

My search for a new revision surgeon has been put on hold. A few weeks ago my hubby told his brother he had been taking care of their dad for over a year without help. Their dad has dementia.
On Feb 15th I take hubby to ER due to pain from an undiagnosed source. Hubby was immediately admitted to hospital and after many tests and a biopsy, was diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma, metastasized to his bones. He had 1 radiation treatment on Wed and begins chemo on Thursday. BIL has stepped up to the plate. in support of his father [emoji171][emoji171][emoji171][emoji171]. Asking for prayer for our family. TIA[emoji120][emoji120][emoji120]

Oh dear. I’m so sorry to hear your sweet husband has this diagnosis and your family is going through this difficult time. My father in law had dementia and taking care of him was a full time job. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
