THR That wasn't so bad!!!

How long they apply is up to your surgeon but the usual is six weeks. None of them are permanent.

Still early days Judy! You will get back to what you love to do. Just bit more time and healing. Shoes and dressing will come as well as muscles getting toned. Just remember - your hip didn't get bad overnight. Healing and muscle tone will take time as well.

Hi Judy,
I am about 2 weeks behind you and have been following your thread. I was told prior to the surgery by my OS that it really takes at least 3 months before one will feel like "herself' again. I took that to mean that I won't really be doing yoga or Pilates before that. I hear your frustration. I did some extra leg lifts the other day and now my groin area has been paying for it with two days of pain that feels almost like it did at the beginning. :( I'm still not at the point where I'm saying, "Oh, I'm better off because of this surgery." I'm sure we will be able to say that at 3-6 months though. I find it so hard to be patient and not get down about it sometimes too. But then something subtle will shift again, and I'll feel hopeful and excited.

:bathtub: this is me practicing patience....once I can get in the tub, that is. haha.

Hi Judy,

Your 5 week recap sounds fabulous! Be gentle on yourself. My therapist had said realistically 3-6 months there will be major improvements back to normal plus the year mark is another big date to celebrate. A 5 weeks to be driving and getting around like you are is really great.

The pain in the groin is not so great to hear, hopefully that is a temporary deal you dr will help you with this. Hopefully at the follow up appointment he will also allow you to sleep on your side. I'm just sleep on my side, still use a pillow between knees I think that's a safety comfy blanket habit from before. I still find I start on side now and end up waking up on my back.

Hold tight....every week you will see more improvements! I'm two weeks in front of you and even this week I've been doing lots of good things and feeling stronger more so than last week!

Sorry for your weather, that part we cannot change and I can imagine its discouraging the time will go quickly and it will be springtime for you!

Hang in there.....sending you lots of warm, sunny love!

xxooxx

Judy I sleep on my side now with a pillow between the legs. Started last week. I do sleep on my unoperated side. Last night I did try the left but felt uncomfortable at the surgical site, so a quick roll and I was back on my right and asleep

Hi Judy from sunny (well sometimes) OZ

Lovely to catch up on reading through your thread. My how the weeks are flying by. I so remember you when you were in pre-op asking such good questions..

I think, you are doing very well, but sorry about the groin pain :(

I have to have #2 hip done sometime soon.. It will be privately again, so will literally make my mind up one week and hopefully get it done shortly after.

But right from the beginning of my journey, I always had in my mind that it would take two years for me to be completely healed, much sooner to start to feel normal though as you are already to some degree.. So hang in there honey, it will happen, lots of love xx

Hi Judy, I think that I recognize the feeling you are struggling with - "so close, yet so far". It's so hard when you start to feel ready to jump back into your old life, but those last few limits hold you back. Hang in there, it will get alot better real soon. Hope you find creative ways of chasing the blues away - weeks six to eight seemed to pose a challenge for me in terms of sudden moodiness. I think alot of us go thru it.
Anita

Oh, Anita and Sandy, thank you for the encouragement! I have been trying a new outlook - no more pity parties for me!!! Sandy, I need your sunshine! Ice storms here so all the schools closed again!

On a bright note! Today is week 6 and I have a few new developments to report!:yahoo: I can now roll over at night - sleep on my non-op side and my stomach so the extra options are improving my sleep (I have a PT friend in my ladies group who really got my confidence up that I really don't need to stress that much about the rules - 90 deg, or crossing over center - she is a very good PT and said she has never heard of anyone dislocating from crossing over and they used to actually gentle stretch patients in that direction to loosen up tight hip flexors). Also, have been able to get my undies and pants on with no tool assistance! Can't quite get socks but getting closer. I can do stairs normally, with a railing and get in and out of the car normally now also!

Also, Hubby took me to town yesterday for a glass of wine and appetizers and I made him take a six block walk with me - he froze and found it hard and I loved it! No limp and longer stride (he noticed!) - felt very good and easy and the cold did not even bother me!!!

I am still struggling with a little thigh/groin pain but I guess that is to be expected for a while. thats what bothered me pre-op so I can't expect it to go away overnight! It doesn't bother me when I walk at all - only when I do the leg lift exercises and when I sit too much or move in certain directions. I don't walk enough due to the weather so that may have something to do with it. Hopefully, at my 2mo. visit I can schedule some PT sessions to get me going in the exercise direction and plan to join a gym then.

Judy

Just been catching up with your thread and to me you sound as if things are progressing really nicely.

Getting the blues sometimes and feeling that progress is not a quick as we would like is it seems quite a feature of most peoples recovery. Quite often two steps forward followed by one step back.

At 6 weeks I felt much like you - generally ok but some aches and pains - will it get better or is this it?

I am now 3 months and the imptrovement in that further 6 weks has been very good for me. i also had a lateral posterior minimally invasive. I feel now I am back to normal - ok I am not as physically active as you - but I am certian in another 6 weeks you will be reporting you have got your life back.

Just give it a bit more time.

regards

Dave

Hi Judy, I think you sound like things are going great! I think I'll be happy if my progress is the same when I'm at 6 weeks out. Sorry you are having the groin pain--my advice on that would be to keep in touch with your surgeon about when to expect resolution of that.

Keep up the good work. You are one my inspirations here on this board!

Now there are some really great milestones to report!!! I'm so happy to hear you were able to get out and about a bit. It's a preview of good days to come!

Hello Judy!

You sound well and hey you never come across as having a pity party duh!

YAY to sleeping on our side!!

I'm really confident if you had the ability to get out more for walking you would feel better, the weather you have to deal with is brutal and definitely would make anyone get cabin fever seriously! Brrrrrrrr just thinking about it.

I like reading our fellow hippy friends who are ahead of us, Anita, Sandy and Dave it gives us lots to look forward too, however also being realistic! My home based PT gal had said it would take about 4-6 months when things would be falling back to normal and this definitely makes more sense to me now, eventhough I'm functioning so well I catch myself still being limited on little quirky things. Oooooooo one thing I did do yesterday I wore a different pair of tennis shoes yesterday and had to re-tie the laces without thinking I lifted both feet one at a time onto a high chair, no fears at all didn't even think about! It's crazy to notice the little things!!

I hope the groin pain goes away completely, glad its better....but gone all together would be perfection!

Sending you lots of love! Stay warm!

xxooxx

Wow Judy, love the happiness pouring from your words!!!

Sorry to hear youve got some pain but things are still adjusting, itll get better-patience!

Judy,
What a great report! I bet that glass of wine tasted particularly good. And you certainly deserved it after all the hard work you've been doing to move along in your recovery. Glad to hear it's paying off nicely. No limp AND panties on without a device! Woo Hoo! All of these milestones feel so good.

Judy, I am so glad you are doing so well. Hope the pain will also leave you soon. I know it is hard to get out and walk more in the snow and ice.
Joining a health club may do the trick for you.
Keep letting us know how you are doing.
Bea

Fantastic Judy

Wish I could send you some sunshine, better still, if you were here we could have taken you for a swim at the outdoor heated pool we go to...

I'll bet that glass of wine and the walk outside felt Sooooo good.

It does improve each day and week and month. I think you are doing great. Mmmm, great that you can do those leg raises.. I just pout and say NO to SO that I am not doing those... I do a modified version that he showed me....

One little tip, I have a book written by an OS about rehab etc.. And it said when one does the exercises, do them with the unoperated leg first to loosen the muscles.. I tried it early one morning and it worked a treat.. So then tried the same with the standing one's I do at work that day and my surgical side felt so much better... Interesting theory! xxxxx

Thank you all for the comments! The pain seems to have subsided - I think I tweaked something with all my improvements mainly with the new sleeping positions but I have adapted how I change positions and now can change without thinking about it - feels great! So I am back to doing all the exercises (even the leg raises) pretty much pain free!

Updates! Spent all day Wed. at work, teleconference, office work, and back to teaching private lessons again. I could actually do some of the stances with no pain so that is some progress!!

Yesterday I went to the big supermarket for the first time since surgery to do a major shopping (a warmer day and there was no snow or ice to contend with!) and was amazed - no pain at all. Last time I remember having to use the cart as a crutch and agony just moving around the store! I also went to the mall to do some mall walking for about 1/2 an hour and felt really good. I have been trying to do about that long on the treadmill but I really like being out better - treadmill=boring!!!

Today is another snowy day but a beautiful one! Fluffy snow on the trees looks like a wintry postcard! I don't have to go any where so I can enjoy the pretty view without the hassle of cleaning off the car and other miserable winter tasks!

Look at you go!!!So great getting back your life pain free! I remember with my 1st THR and being able to shop without a cart or walking aides...very freeing:yes 4:

I am glad you have your life back again. I also went the first time yesterday to the supermarket, but no walking around yet. Can't wait to do my own shopping again.
It is so great that you are without pain now. Things are looking up. :yes 4:

Hi Judy, just catching up with your thread. I'm so glad to hear that you are back doing your martial arts. Doesn't it feel good? I was able to do some Tai Chi from a couple of weeks out, but Tai Chi is undoubtedly a lot less demanding than what you do - I've see your vids! So you've made some real serious progress - congratulations!

I'm now back to being able to do all of the Form (we do Yang family long form, which is 108 moves), but I have to apply modifications to the kicks - no way I can get that leg up to the horizontal!

Keep it up, Judy. Please post another video soon of you back strutting your stuff!
