Surgery: April 29- Nervous and Excited

I hated those TEDS. My OS actually let me take them off a little ahead of time, as they were cutting in just under my knees. I'm sure you'll be sitting down with your legs down a lot at the graduation, so when you get home be sure you elevate your legs or you're liable to get increased swelling. And DON'T overdo it on graduation day (or any other day, for that matter).!

I was lucky, my surgeon didn't insist I use TEDS - he said 'I have you on blood thinning injections'... Every surgeon has a different protocol, ask his advice as to whether you can temporarily go without them. :)

Hi everyone. Just wanted to give an update. I'm back in Boston (having left sunny Florida). My surgery is this Tuesday. I am feeling prepared thanks in so many ways to the forum. :thankyou:. I have read many threads and got so much information.

I spent the day cleaning out my bedroom….and plan on doing more spring cleaning over the next few days. I think I need to be distracted!!

I am nervous, I had my tonsils out at age four….other than that no other operations. To me this is a two part process first the operation (and all its worries) and then the recovery and hoping that my new hip becomes a functioning part of my body. I know I need to take this process one step at a time.

So hopefully I will stay sane these next few days……

Thanks for letting me vent

@Hdold Just think - this time next week your surgery will be over and you'll be on your recovery journey. I can tell you, very honestly, that today I almost never thought about my hip. I was busy all morning at home and worked 3 hours this afternoon. Today is my 5 week post-op anniversary and I am back to normal or I should say better than normal. My old normal was not that good:) I'd also like to pass along some wisdom I read from another BS member "while surgery seems scary to us, it is our OS every day job". I'm sure you will do great.
All the best to you.

You'll be amazed how well you do!! I'm not aware of my hips at all, except to be VERY grateful for them, or if someone asks me about the experience. I never imagined how many people either have had or are contemplating hip replacement. People ask me about it all the time. DO be patient with the healing process and don't try to rush it or you might get a setback, like I did!

Peace and love to you.

PS: I had only ever had my tonsils out, too -- some 60+ years ago. Things have changed a bit!

@Hdold I am a week from Monday and I am feeling much like you. I want to do a bunch of stuff between now and then, but I just hurt too much. Just got back from a 30 minute trip to WalMart and I'm exhausted.

Like you, my only major surgery was my tonsils out at age 5! So I am nervous about the exact same things you are. I'm going to follow you so we can encourage each other through recovery. What type of approach is your surgeon using? Apparently I'm having direct lateral, with a spinal and sedation. They're telling me I have lots of restrictions after, even tho what I read about direct lateral says they're shouldn't be any. But whatever - I'm just looking forward to no pain. I can't WAIT to get out walking, take my granddaughter to the park, and get all this extra weight off!!!

Hey looks like we have the same day! It would be fun to follow your recovery thread!

Hi @M1ke yes we are the same date. How are you doing?
Will be very cool to share our recovery stories. Good luck for Tuesday.

I'm doing ok just knowing it's around the corner. My hip seems to be declining pretty quick since December and now I have days that I've taken my cane to work just in case. Really in the big picture though that's doing pretty good compared to the people on crutches waiting for a surgery.

How's things for you?

Just wanted to add my good luck wishes for you all but of course especially you @Hdold as this is your thread!!!!

I'll look forward to your recovery thread on the other side!!!!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. @moms4tne my doctors procedure is called the Superior Capsulotomy….its a procedure he developed which "maximally preserves the soft tissues around the hip joint " He is very well known and his procedure is very successful. I will have have very little restrictions. I have spoken to someone who got this done and she was very pleased. So here's hoping. :beg:

I think you will find any restriction far easier to follow than you imagine. I was SO worried about them and they ended up being quite natural. My hip just didn't want to move past them for awhile. Slow and steady- you'll be just fine. This time next week - done and dusted!

@Hdold Your day is fast approaching, and it sounds like you are ready to go.
Best of luck to you as you countdown to that date.
You will do great!

Jaycey is right, somehow when we are shown any restrictions we may have to follow - somehow they seem to be one part of our sub conscious thinking during recovery. I still pick up items off the floor a certain way, still sleep with a pillow under my leg - not because I have to, I just feel more comfortable doing this.

@Hdold I wanted to let you know I"m thinking of you as you wait for your surgery. The last few days can be kind of squirrely, though I had a sense of sort of resigned calm set in that it was finally here and very close and I just had to get through it to get rid of the pain.

You won't mind the restrictions (except maybe if you have to wear those stupid TED stockings -- ICK!), and you will be SOO glad you did this, you really and truly will! I am the Great Chickenheart and I got through it and you will, too. I had posterio-lateral approach, and had restrictions -- as someone said above, you won't really mind them because it is mostly common sense.

I"ll keep you in my thoughts and prays for your upcoming surgery and freedom from that awful pain.

Peace and love to you.

Great now I don't want the TED stalking and I don't even know what they are. :snork:

I assume they are compression stalkings? Are they for swelling or clotting?

M1ke - yes they are the glamorous comfortable (not) compression stockings to help with blood clots and circulation. Once they put them on you at hospital, I think they're on for a while. I know hip class said to flex foot forward and back plenty times a day to help drive circulation. But there are far worse things in life than stockings for a short bit (relatively speaking). Best wishes to you and the other "hippies" - I am 47 and go May 28th. Can't wait to see how long before can resume a good nights sleep again :)
