MUA Spinners new knee recovery

@spinnerdiva, I've merged your new thread with your old recovery thread. We prefer members tostick with one recpvery thread so we can check back on your history. I also saves people duplicating answers they've given you before.

Additionally, I gave you responses to your answers about exercises and pain management and there were some things you hadn't supplied sufficient information on but since this was the penultimate post in the thread, I assume you probably never read it anyway - would that be correct? It's now post #15 here. It's a bit out of date now any way, but it just emphasises why we prefer members to stick with one recovery thread.

Thank you , wasn't quite sure how it works . Yes I read your reply , just hasn't gotten it answered ,again little unsure just how to add the reply and highlight the questions

...highlight the questions
- put the cursor at the left of what you want to highlight
- hold down the left mouse button
- drag over the text you want to highlight (it should be highlighted as you do so)
- release the mouse button
- click 'quote' in the little box that appears
- scroll down to the reply box at the bottom of the page
- click the 'insert quotes' box.

Thanks ! I will do that soon as I get back on my PC !

Josephine ,
Several closed chain leg exercises - what do these consist of? I need details
The Closed chain are now the standing leg sweeps sideways, butt kicks back , leg raise front and back standing , small side steps and step ups on a small step

Active knee extensions - can you define this please? I need details
Leg extended on a roll and a small weigh added above the knee

At home
I do heel slides ,knee extensions ,heel cord stretching ,knee extensions when seated ,step ups
I do need details please
Heel slides min( some days 4) 3x day lying on the bed - 10 x . Also seated when no icing or elevating off and on t/o the day
Knee extensions - seated and extending the leg 10x or lying with leg on roll and short arc raises
Active knee is leg on the roll with small weight for 5 min and increasing as I can.
Heel cord stretches are with a band to stretch the entire lower leg . Also do calf stretching as it is very tight .
The step ups are on a small aerobic step 10x 3x day..

For the location of my left knee being on fire by the chart I would say D-LF3. This seems to be from favoring my surgery leg , but does concern me .

I see my OS on Monday . PT has not increased my ROM much since my last appt with the OS 3 weeks ago . I have pain in the back of the knee when trying to get flexation . The MS and PT can feel very tight knots that we can't get worked out . I have an old scar ( from when I was about 15 and had a glass door fall over me and had a several stitches to close the would inside in the muscle and outside ) right in the crease . Also had what was felt to be a cyst rupture in March that caused me to not walk properly wearing a brace prior to my surgery in Aug. to keep it from "catching " and not able to bear weight .
I have increased icing to 40 min at least 3x day and at night on the front and back of my leg.

Do you change the title of your posts when I is old ?

Thanks.
Lynn

@spinnerdiva
I'll leave it to @Josephine to talk to you about exercise.

However, if you would like your thread title changed, tell us what you would like and I'll ask someone to do it.

My comments in bold

The Closed chain are now the
standing leg sweeps sideways - for why - this is not a knee exercise
butt kicks back - for why - this is not a knee exercise
leg raise front and back standing - not a productive exercises imo
small side steps and step ups on a small step - you don't say how many but assuming you're doing 5 or 10 at a time, not good
Knee extensions - seated and extending the leg 10x or lying with leg on roll and short arc raises - do 5 at the most
Heel cord stretches are with a band to stretch the entire lower leg - okay
Also do calf stretching as it is very tight - okay
The step ups are on a small aerobic step 10x 3x day - don't do these, they are very injurious to the knee

Heel slides min (some days 4) 3x day lying on the bed - 10 x
Also seated when no icing or elevating off and on t/o the day
you don't need two exercises for flexion and at 9 weeks, you shouldn't need them at all!

NO WEIGHTS on your leg! This is responsible for the pain you described.

In fact, all these exercises are contributing to your pain. All you need at 9 weeks is normal activities and walking. Just normal stuff, no route marches! I strongly recommend you read my recovery threads to see how little exercising I did!
First knee. Knee recovery - UK style
Second knee. Josephine's 2nd knee story - short version where I did even less!

Thank you for your time and reply.
The exercise that are not really knee are more hip strength , I assume the theory is strong hips =strong knees .
I read your recovery earlier and gathered a lot of insight.
I still do the heel slides trying to get my knee to bend . I cannot walk very far and really don't have the normal flex trying to do the heel toe gait . Still can't do steps into my home except single leg up . I walk on the treadmill and around the house when I cannot get outside ,try not to sit to long . Still elevating / icing ectopic.
Not really where would like to be at 9 weeks ,I was to be back to work at 12 which is not going to happen right now .
I see my OS ( actually his PA) Monday to see what is wrong behind my knee and also better pain management.,

Do let us know what your OS says.

I think that maybe you are expecting too much, too soon of your knee.
9 weeks is still very early in this year-long recovery journey.

It's quite normal not to be able to do stairs normally at this stage. It took me almost 3 months and I've heard of people who take longer than that, but are still having a normal recovery.

I will update what the OS has to say Monday .
Making my list of things to ask today so I am sure not to leave any question out

Yesterday walked in the grocery and other than that took it rather easy . Now today and part of last night I have been back in pain with a stabbing sharp then to throbbing pain under my lower knee cap rather hurts to walk now .
Icing and elevating all day ,Aghhhhhhhhhhh .Addding that to the mornings list for my appointment .
Feeling like I move from one thing to another ,trying to stay positive to make it to the other side but it sure gets tough to do .

I hear you ! But somehow, we shall overcome ...Good luck at your appointment today

@Randi , thanks ! Somehow we do .
Love your profile pic if your Golden . Our 11 yr old Golden just passed a few months ago . Fantastic dogs .

Sorry about your Golden. They are the best. Our Oliver is 6 and 1/2, and goofy as always. He's quite unsure of what to make of me using a cane..and more confused about me going back to a walker.,me too...

That's to be expected over all. Don't fret about the stairs - it will come in time.
I walk on the treadmill and around the house when I cannot get outside ,try not to sit to long
Well that's the wrong approach. You need rest and all that. you're not letting your knee rest and heal.

Nothing wrong except swelling and pain caused by doing too much.

See, this is what I mean - walking to the store at 9 weeks is too much. Drive there by all means but don't walk there. Much too soon.

Little mix up their I think .I said I walked around in the store shopping , not to the store . Made it 3/4 of the way and was at my limit so my husband finished while I waited on a bench near the checkout .
The waking on the treadmill is only 10min or less very slow and I worked up to that from only one min and this is not every day .Outside is only to the mailbox at the end of the drive or out to sit on the deck for some sun and air . Otherwise I get up about every hour and move about the house a little as I was instructed at my discharge.
I am confused a bit as I thought walking is encouraged?
The apt with my OS was scheduled after he was not real pleased with my progress at my 6 wk follow up ,just happens to also be what I need to address few questions.

Fine line between doing too much and not enough ,if I don't move my other knee complains along with my back and everything else lol . If I do more then my knew knee complains . Still trying to find the balance!

After an exam going over everything I am now back at the hospital on Wed for a MUA . Not what I was hoping but hoping for a good outcome . My OS is rated as one of the top in N America,I like him and his staff so I will trust what needs done and keep pushing forward !

I hope the MUA works for you. Don't forget to ask what ROM your surgeon achieved while you were unconscious.

Thank you I will be sure to ask ! Been a long stressful day ,now it seems I am fighter a nasty headache,it just keeps getting better

:) Thanks . Just hoping things get better and this works . I have seem to be going in the wrong direction .
Does my color banner need changed since I am having this done ? If so how ?
