LeeApril26, ByGosh, zauberflöte, Kim22, nmscienceteacher, bottomshollow, TeeEm - I am knitting a pair of Norwegian-type mittens in red and white, for myself! While on vacation I also bought yarn to make each of my boys a pair of heavy socks for Christmas.
Lenora, you'd asked: my nephew told us that this region is actually classified as a temperate rain forest! I'll need to check that out. :) But... it sure felt like it!
ZF, yes... rain! But the week were were there, most days had long dry spells, so the Songmen went hiking, my SIL and I went shopping... lots of fun! But the fields were flooded, the hiking trail was a river... goodness.
Interesting learning: I walked a lot.... and by yesterday I realized I really did not feel the need for my cane most of the time! Today we arrived home, and I walked around the outside of the house to peruse my gardens and I simply did not need the cane! WOW!!!:happydance: The first few steps after sitting for a while are dicey, but then.... so far, so good?! I'll keep you all posted!

How wonderful, Songlady, another milestone
[Bonesmart.org] second time easier (so far)
you can check off your list!

Take care. We care.

Thanks, bottomshollow! LeeApril26, ByGosh, zauberflöte, Kim22, nmscienceteacher, TeeEm, I know not to imagine that I am completely done with the cane, because progress with this, like anything else in life, is not a consistent straight line. No doubt there will be bumps along the way! But I had not felt real progress in some weeks, and I realized a few days ago that I really did feel progress now as compared to when we left on our trip 10 days ago. WHAT a good feeling!:egypdance: I wish it for all of us!

Songlady How funny! I was kidding about the rain forest. Who knew? Hope you didn't have a load of muddy laundry from all those hikers.
Congratulations on the ditching of the cane, and the increased strength. I found that a change of venue and doing different things distracted me and made me use my new hip more actively.
Don't forget to post photo of your knitting projects for us to admire.:)

Songlady Great news that you don't need the cane now, and you feel stronger and better than before you left. All that walking sure does a body good!
The mittens you're knitting sound really pretty - red and white is a great color combo, especially in the winter. And your boys will sure appreciate nice, warm socks. Especially if we have a winter anywhere near like last year. Good job, Mom. :)

Songlady Congratulations on strengthening your legs so much that you have been able to ditch the cane.Well done you.The vacation has done you good as well as being fun and as well as that you can start to look forward to putting on your hiking boots next year and doing some hiking yourself.I hope the weather is better for you then.We are still in the middle of a heat wave over here which is so unusual.

Songlady wow, she walked so far she got rid of the cane! Of course you'll need it from time to time, but so long as you keep up all that hill-walking, you should get stronger and stronger! let's see now, where are there hills for SL to hike up and down 5 times a day.... :heehee:

Songlady, I am sooo happy for you.....:happydance:
Someone advised me that if I had to use my cane from time to time, don't consider it a setback, just a little help when you need it. I use it periodically when I get tired and I'm glad that it's there for me. I treat it like an old friend who stops by just to help out.....
Keep up the good work and I'd love a pair of mittens, red & white are my sorority colors...HINT, HINT......

Doupie - I like that advice about using the cane! And I will take a picture of my mitten-in-progress and post it. Since we're arrived back in the NorthEast the weather has been too hot to consider touching yarn!:yikes:
LeeApril26, ByGosh, zauberflöte, Kim22, nmscienceteacher, TeeEm, Peaches, Elosarabrab, I had my 12 week appointment today! The OS was thrilled with the xrays, said the implants looked great, and said he was impressed with my walking. Before I launched into my "I hadn't felt a lot of progress for a month or so until a few days ago" speech he gave ME a speech about each hip being different, just as the right hand and left hands are different, and each recovery is different. He said that he sees a lot of improvement since my 6 week visit, and that recovery continues to take place for up to a year, especially for hips.
I told him that the scar feels sore sometimes, and the hip aches sometimes, and he said sure, likely all depending on activity level, tiredness, and "all the other things that affect how we feel each day."
He will see me back in 3 months, and then 6 months - which will be a year since the surgery. Because my first hip was also done in April, he'll combine those checkups.
And, he said I should ask for antibiotics for dental cleaning and my annual colonoscopy, especially because, in my case, the doc tends to take DOZENS of biopsies, thereby allowing germs into my system.
Thus endeth the report: Thanks be to..... :heehee: Oh, sorry, wrong document....:rotfl:

SongLady you are doing very well. Glad to hear you are doing so very well. Now it is just get back to the business of life "as usual"....which for us hippies is all an exercise in daily wonder (I wonder if I am really okay doing this today...LOL) and celebration( I CAN really do this today!)
Ain't life grand when you don't hurt all the time!

Hi Songlady Congratulations on a wonderful report. You must be thrilled to have two new and good hips and its just a question of working towards living life to full once again.Well done.I think nmscienceteacher really describes our current stage of recovery as an exercise in daily wonder.( I wonder if I am really ok doing this and the great feeling when you realise that you can )

Hi everyone (I know I have omitted some folks) - 13 weeks yesterday for me. Here is my big learning for the week: Up, down, Up, down! (I keep learning that and forgetting!!) Example: Sunday morning I played organ for two services. Basically rested in the afternoon, then went to a gathering of friends that evening. I was careful to stand and sit, not too long at either, as comfortable. Monday, I hurt alllll day! I would get up from my desk and lurch to the kitchen counter, then cruise along the counter like a toddler.... normally after 5-6 steps my gait evens out, but NOT so, yesterday. I just hurt, and felt sorry for myself. This morning I woke up and.... wow! I had less pain from the moment I got out of bed! About mid-morning I realized that yesterday's pain had been from the activities of the day before! And so I went out shopping with Songman this afternoon, dragging him to all kinds of outlets looking for The Perfect Inexpensive Plastic Drinking Glasses to use on our porch (we broke a "glass" glass a few weeks ago and decided plastic would be wiser.) I will probably feel the worse for wear tomorrow, so.... someone remind me if I complain?! :rotfl:

Meanwhile, I've been asked to do a fun and special project at work this week ("part time" - not this week!) so if I'm not on BS, I'm busy with that. Best to everyone! And again, Nylsor, thanks for the London tour!!

LeeApril26 - so that's how it's going with you, too, Lenora? Yes, exactly - it feels fine at the time!
Ho well, as long as no permanent damage is done (and I doubt I'm doing anything to cause actual damage!)
I guess it's the way it is, for now!
The project is short-term, and after Sunday I'm on vacation again for 3 weeks, so... a fun thing short-term, and then on to Maine in the middle of next week!
I've thought about you and wondered how things are going! :)

Songlady. Oh, Maine sounds lovely. Spent one day there and have always wanted to go back.
I'm doing well, I think. Would like to be able to walk longer aand faster, but hoping I get there, and grateful to be walking any distance at all.
Looking for ways to reinvolve myself in the world after over a year of doing not much. Was thinking of trying Tai Chi in the fall.
Have a wonderful time in Maine. Do you know Elisabeth Oglivie's books about life on the islands off Maine?

Songlady LeeApril26 me three! My triggers, so far, are the treadmill and vacuuming, and, possibly, sitting watching a movie too long, really!. After a lovely three days+ one rest day (ok, I vacuumed in the morning), today I feel stiff and painful and no fun. But I was kinda expecting it. I'm a month behind youall.

New, short-term fun project followed by another vacation in gorgeous Maine, and new porch glasses to boot (did you find what you were looking for?)-- does it get any better? Surely it will be cool in Maine by early August?! Mmmm I see you wearing LLBean clothes, which are never appropriate here in Tidewater VA unless you live on the water I guess.:heehee:

Songlady Hi Meg, Thought I'd follow up on the Oglivie books here. Love them! Could you please share the name of the non-series book? I don't know any others but the Tide series. Love the pun.
Took a longish walk today, with a couple of rest stops, and ran lots of errands. Felt quite good, which really is wonderful. I am, of course, icing-mostly lower back. Hope your project is going well, and you are enjoying our cool day. It inspired my walk.
