Building the cat coral sounds like a big project.
It seems so, but we've done three others over the years-- the first was a reverse corral to keep them away from a tree with a nest of yellow-bellied woodpeckers in it. The cats would sit under the tree with their mouths open, as they do LOL So we have the technique under control :) They were terrified of chicken wire, don't know why but glad of it!

How are you doing today Songlady ? No word from you, I hope you feel better! I was able to go to my nurse's luncheon, and now I'm quite sore. At least the hip behaved while I was at the restaurant, though. I have another one tomorrow with the nurses in the town where I live. I'm keeping my hopes up that I can make that one, too.

It's dreadful weather, isn't it LeeApril26 ? I'm glad the storms are supposed to cool it off. How are you holding up? You must have air conditioning - I don't see how anyone in the city can live without it. It's hotter there with all of the asphalt and tall buildings.

zauberflöte Poor cats! Gee, your kitty is having tummy trouble over his "eating out" habits and the other kitty is nearly homeless. It's a no-win situation for them. And for you. I guess the kitty enclosure is your only option if you want your pet to stay healthy. It sounds like a big job, too. Oh dear, pets can make us turn grey just like kids can!

and other friends - hi all! HOT.....!!!
I've dealt, I think, with the missed job. I was waiting THREE MONTHS to hear the outcome about that (and if you really want to know more, PM me - too boring for the thread!)
Didn't sleep well last night; I read in someone else's thread about "restless leg" being somewhat common after surgery, but I seemed to have 2 restless legs, restless spine and restless shoulders! I am hoping for better sleep tonight. Songman and I went out to an "early bird special" supper and then walked some along a boardwalk on the beach.... lovely and cooler there.
I am still using the trusty cane, because I lurch way to the op side if I don't. And for much of the day I feel a bit of <ouch> (not a lot, just a little) when I put my weight on that leg. I know I shouldn't complain; some of us have much bigger issues. But I DO not think I was having these issues last hip at this juncture.
And now I hear Jo and the mods telling me that each surgery is different and not to compare..... but, golly, I am IMPATIENT, and from my own prior experience, this feels abnormal. Though it shouldn't; I should take it as it comes.

So.... having just had an entire dialog with myself...

I didn't speak with mom until late afternoon and she told me she'd been up much of the night with nausea and had horrible diarrhea today. She called her GP and found out one of the meds she'd restarted Saturday has those as side effects. Frankly, I was too stunned to ask if she'd discontinued them or was still taking them. Goodness, I know she'd like a reprieve! (and.... so would I, for her.)
zauberflöte - cats. Goodness. We came in from supper and ours were sprawled out as long and flat as could be on the floor, trying to get cool.
ByGosh: Yay!!! You made the lunch! Sorry for the soreness. I hope you have a restorative sleep.
LeeApril26 and Peaches - I don't know how you are doing in that hot city!! OK, I hope. Songman is putting on a SUIT and going in tomorrow. The things we do for money.....
I hope I didn't ignore anyone.....on to peruse your threads, dear friends!:friends: :friends: :friends: :friends:

Just now catching up with what you've been going through lately, Songlady, and I'm very sorry ... your mom, the driving, the job. prospect I really am sorry. I guess there sure could be a link between emotional stress and physical pain and soreness. I think I've seen pain and soreness from this surgery recovery escalate after a stressful period, and I have no gone through a fraction of what you have. And the heat and humidity in the northeast just zaps all energy by half or more. Please try to just force yourself to slow down as much as you can, even if it's just brief lie-downs or cat naps. Ice, of course. But chilling out in other ways is surely on order, too? Take care, and know your friends here are thinking of you....

Songlady Good to hear from you, but so sorry about the "restless everything" syndrome. It must be very uncomfortable. The walk on the beach sounds lovely, and I hope the evening out and cool beach breezes allow you to sleep.
Regarding the lurching leg, I was doing that for a while. I do not have pain when I put weight on the operated leg, but when exercising I was listing to the side when I stood on just the operated leg. PT did not seem to do to much, but I just came back from our country cabin, where I have access to a pool in the summer. I have been walking in the water every day, trying very hard to regain my gait. On the way home we stopped at a market, and I walked across the parking lot with NO cane and no lurch. The walking in waist deep water for increasing periods seems to have done the job. Now back in the city with no pool access so I hope it lasts. Do you have access to a pool? The Heal Your Hips book I have says you should walk horizontally in the pool (level, no incline) frontward, backward and sideways. When going forward, swing arms to alternate with feet. Hope I am making sense. I feel so much stronger..
I also tried the collapsible cane tonight, as we went out to dinner with our daughter for my birthday. (Now eligible for Medicare-sigh!) It actually feels better than my regular cane, and was easy to open and close up. You need a rubberband or case to keep it closed. It is very lightweight.
Am horrified to read about your mom's reaction to the medication. Yikes. So easy to get dehydrated in this heat. Hope she's feeling a little better.
And regarding the weather ByGosh, Songlady zauberflöte : Let me start by saying I like hot weather, but boy this is really hot and humid for June. We seem to have gone from weeks of rain and cold to incredibly hot weather.
We live in a duples in the bottom of old brownstone. Our bedroom is on the lower floor, and it is usually quite cool. We do not have air conditioning in our bedroom-just a fan-but it is generally okay. Our living room floor has AC, as does the guest bedroom, so if it gets bad we can retreat to that one. Hope you are all holding up in the heat.

Ooh girls it sounds so hot and humid there, really uncomfortable and not nice at all. We never had temps like that and are very lucky to get into the 80s in our summers! I've been on holiday in those temperatures but normally in a dry heat and always with a pool and AC to escape to. zauberflöte your poor cat, they really don't know what's good for them do they, but at least he's got you doing all you can for him, sounds like next doors has to fend for itself!!
Songlady I too am comparing surgeries already, I don't think you can help doing that can you? I have a really restless leg, it was giving me a hard time last night, do you know why this happens or have any ideas to stop it, it happens to me when I'm trying to relax and it'll buzz then twitch, so annoying, must be worse for you if you've got lots of it!! Hope mum is feeling better, will she get different meds do you think? :umm:
LeeApril26 I'd definitely be retreating to the guest room with the AC, I'd struggle to sleep in the heat and humidity.

Songlady It was a very good "dialog with self" to be posted for posterity, I think :) I agree, your emotional stress this time around is very likely to be impacting both your perceptions and how your body deals with things. Your hip wants all the energy for healing, but your emotions and physical activity level also demand some-- so maybe the hip says, "ok, I'll show her!"

Songlady Littlejem Your restless and buzz/twitch things sound awfully annoying! I had sometwitching when I was on lots of percocet, but it's mostly gone. It still affects my hands a little tho-- kinda scary. And some sort of twitch in the op leg, like a mini-spasm, which wants to lead to worse. And a sort of spasm that takes the whole body if I stretch while barely awake-- everything super-contracts from mid-back to calves, and I have to talk it down off the ledge, as it were. So I have had to stop stretching at all, b/c I'm afraid I'll rotate violently! Are these related to the restless things you're talking about?

Songlady oh dear your poor mother! A reprieve right about now would be welcome :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LeeApril26 !!!

I had the 'buzz twitch' in both legs, pre both surgeries, so at least its getting a little better but I've no idea what mine could be! I had a similar thing happen if I stretch with both legs in bed, they would almost jump and as you said I had to try and remember not to stretch!!

Littlejem, zauberflöte, it's good to know I'm not the only one with the leg thing. At first post-op my leg would HOP all by itself as I lay in bed! This is a little different.
Last night it was some better, although I still lay there for an hour before I fell asleep. I think the leisurely stroll by the beach helped!! And I'm sure the mental/emotional stresses of the past few days have not helped.
ZF, please don't rotate violently - don't need you falling off the bed!
And Littlej, thanks for saying that it's probably natural to compare the surgeries, even though we know we shouldn't.

ByGosh, Peaches, LeeApril26, I talked to Mom today and she's better. Doc took her off what she believes is the offending medication (which is not something she probably needs anyway, more of a "just in case" med) and told her to take Immodium. She sounded cheerful, though she had decided to wait until tomorrow to venture out to a nearby grocery store and adjoining hair cutting place. All sounds as if I can breathe a little, maybe...?

Littlejem Songlady @zauberflote I had this leg thing that I described as fireworks going off on and in my operated leg. It happened mostly when I was lying down, especially when I had the pillow between my legs. I only noticed it when I stopped taking percoset. It was really annoying and scary. The PT attributed it to a nerve in my back or upper leg being pinched while I was lying down. Once the precautions were removed and I could ditch the pillow it was much better. Still happens occasionally, and can wake me up. Don't know if we are describing the same thing???
Songlady Your mom sounds much better today. That's great. Hope she feels well enough to get out tomorrow.

Songlady I'm relieved that your Mom is better! That's one thing less to worry about.

The restless leg business can be a real pain. Everything keeps jumping around. I had that a few times, not too bad, but it is almost impossible to fall asleep when you're flopping about in bed. I wonder if Benadryl would help, at least it might put you to sleep. I'm sure a tranquilizer would stop it - or a pain pill if it's bad enough. It's the nerves acting up. And probably post-op it's the nerves that have been disturbed by the surgery, or objecting to being taken off of the pain medication.
LeeApril26 It's great that your fireworks leg stopped for the most part. And so nice you were able to walk around in the pool. It really can strengthen your leg muscles, and it takes a lot of the stress off of the hips. I love being in the pool, especially in this weather. I prefer to paddle/swim than walk, though, but I'm trying to walk at least part of the time. I really need to get the hip healing book you keep referring to, it sounds very helpful. I wonder if it can be borrowed from the library by e-reading? I'll have to check on it.

Songlady and Littlejem You can't help but to compare this surgery to your previous one. It's only natural for your brain to go to what you've had experience with already. I keep comparing myself to everyone else here, which is not so good. But I can't help it, I'm looking for the 'norm' if there is one, and for answers.

Hi LeeApril26, ByGosh, Peaches, zauberflöte - right; I guess these weird leg twitches are pretty normal.
Mom is a lot better today and sounds very cheerful, whew!
I went for another pedicure (it had been 4+weeks...) and feel pampered. :) I did not take an intentional "walk" today, so we'll see how a day of many less footsteps affects my twitches and sleep! (I have been wearing my pedometer every day this week, so I am mindful of how much walking I've been doing.)
Thanks for all your support, my friends! :friends:

Glad you had your toes pampered Songlady. It must have felt so good, and it looks pretty, too. What color did you choose? red blue green magenta tourquoise purple pinkish or yellow? Gee, that's hard to see!
My daughters always come up with the best colors - they like blue and it actually looks good on them (anything looks good on a teenager) Me? I'm a pink person.

You're wearing a pedometer? What a great idea! How much do you walk/day usually? I'll bet it's more than one would think. Maybe I can dig mine out and see how much I do. It would be interesting.

Hi ByGosh - I chose a peachy-pink for my toenails. I'm pretty traditional. My friend who usually goes with me (couldn't make it today) last time had each nail a different color, from light pink on the big toe to maroon on the pinky toe! The poor pedicurist could hardly believe what she was asking for! I also had a calf massage and neck massage thrown in - so it's quite an experience!
Let's see.... the pedometer says I've walked 2,663 steps today. Yesterday was 6,880! Even by the time breakfast is done I've usually walked 75 or 100 - we live in a big house.

Songlady your mom sounds 100% better than your first report. I don't blame her for waiting till tomorrow LOL.
I think I was not writing clearly-- I meant that my leg might rotate violently, and we know that's a no-no!! Littlejem I'm glad I'm not the only one wth that. Perhaps we will both lose it soon-- I'm getting tired of not stretching, AND of having to remember not to stretch when I'm still half asleep! LeeApril26 No fireworks here, although yesterday for 2 seconds I had a very prickly tingling in my thigh. I have all sorts of weird all-the-time sensations in the thigh, and I'm wondering if some of the lumpy spots are due to all the hundreds of tiny scars from allergy shots, all in the same small area, that I've built up over the years. Hmmm.

So, I need to beat 75 steps before breakfast. In a one story rancher. And I need to count by hand. (literally, maybe Songlady does this too?) Hard to get dressed when your hands are busy counting tho:rotfl:

ByGosh you will be proud of me, when I called the OS with my questions today one of them was about getting rid of this stupid tape over my incision with olive oil per you! :)

ByGosh The book is good, with exercises pre and post op, but the website is also pretty helpful, and if you browse you will find many of the exercises. Here it is: broken link removed: https://www.hiphelp.com/
I would swim if I could kick my leg well, but it still seems to strain it. And, I want to be rid of the cane!!! So like to work on the gait walking in the pool. Seems to make my leg much stronger. I do some of the PT exercises in the pool as well.
Songlady Yeah for the pedicure, and many thanks for the pedometer idea. So happy your mom continues to do well. Deep breath!
zauberflöte I think your prickly tingling is related to my fireworks. How's the counting going?
Saw the new Superman tonight. HATED it. Will try to post tomorrow in the movie thread. I am finally going for a haircut (taxi both ways to and from Manhattan will make this the world's most expensive cut, but I am desperate.) Otherwise will have to wear a bag over my head to Sunday's family gathering. Anyway, very behind in threads.

zauberflöte Pssssst - just a friendly little FYI - Songlady wears a pedometer :heehee:

Can you imagine counting by hand (or mind)? That would get pretty tiring, I'd say. Plus we wouldn't be able to do anything, cuz we'd lose count. "Nope, can't answer the phone, I'm on 1039 steps. No, can't answer the door I might forget I'm on 2576. Can't go on BoneSmart, I'll lose track..." Geez, talk about a little OCD, right?

Songlady Peachy pink is actually my all time favorite color for nail polish.
LeeApril26 You deserve a haircut, and the taxi cost is probably equal to what you would have spent if you had gotten your haircut the usual number of times by now. You'll feel so good afterward, it's worth it. Like @Songlady's peachy pink pedicure and leg and neck massage! How great does that sound?
Thank you so much for the link to the book website! You're very helpful and thoughtful, I want you to know. I appreciate it. And I understand about the feeling in the leg when you attempt swimming. I use a barbell/float thingie between my legs to keep them buoyant when I doggie paddle across the pool. (Yes, it probably looks ridiculous..) Otherwise, it pulls on my hips, because I don't want to kick them enough to keep them afloat, so they sort of hang down. It doesn't feel good. The most comfortable position for me now is the back float. I get more upper body exercise in the pool because I'm not kicking much. But I do gently move my legs back and forth or up and down. The walking would be much better for the legs, I know. It's really good to water walk. I'm just so used to doing laps. I've lately started to walk 1/2 lap, then 'swim' the rest of the way, so I'm getting more walking in. It's made a difference in the muscle tone in my legs, I can tell.

ByGosh Thank you so much! I feel seriously guilty about the taxis. But, you're right. If I had been doing this every six or seven weeks, it would have been much more. So appreciate the support. I have a hard time spending money on myself. Dumb, but trying to change.
The barbell thing is a good idea, as I could use the arm exercise. My hips drag as well, and it feels bad.
I am enjoying the color suggestions from you and Songlady. I tried a silver grey on my toes once, and thought I looked like a corpse. Back to pale pink.
