Thanks for tagging me @scottfamilyman -- I look forward to reading the results of your tests and treatment :)

@Josephine Hi, I did a bone scan. My OS never mentioned that bursa but he said I had bursitis from the outer side of the hip. I guess it could be a 1000 things. I'm getting a ultrasound done soon. Hope this helps! Thanks for your help, Scott

@Josephine Hello, I will follow up with my OS about that shot. Question, I take ibuprofen 800mg 3 times daily, is it ok to mix a Tylenol 500mg in there somewhere? I just recently winged myself off of oxycodone 325 and after 10 months of those, I had withdrawals for about a week. I will keep you posted if I have a question after my ultrasound soon. Thank you, Scott

Perfect! In fact, take the Tylenol 1,000mg 4 times a day. We used to refer top that as the BoneSmart cocktail until I took against recommending NSAIDs (ibuprofen is an NSAID)

@Josephine Hi, so you think I should stop taking ibuprofen 800 all together and just take Tylenol 500 (2) four times daily? Wouldn't the ibuprofen 800 be better for any inflammation I have in my tendons or muscles? I'm just asking! Thank you, Scott

@scottfamilyman
My OS recommends Tylenol because although Advil helps w inflammation, we are also healing bones. He told me Advil can interfere with healing of bones. At 10 weeks post op today, I take 1000 mg (2x strength) 3 or 4 times a day depending on my need and activity level. Every doctor may have a different view but I think this is what Bonesmart recommends too. I hope you are able to work out the best meds for your comfort.

Hi @Josephine , did my ultrasound today! Ultrasound Dr said he didn't see anything odd. He did say he wouldn't be able to detect tendonitis. He and my OS told me that I can't have a mri because of the medal (titanium) in my hip. Everything would reflect off of it. IS THIS TRUE? He also said to keep taking the ibuprofen instead of Tylenol because of my inflammation. He said no to the cortizone shot because it messes with the bone after hip replacement. Plus, no nerve meds either. Feels like I'm out on my own now. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you, Scott :)

Hi @scottfamilyman Sorry that you feel like you are out on your own right now.I had iliopsoas tendinosis post hip replacement and wasn't able to have an MRI on the operated side due to the artefacts from the implant.I had an ultrasound which showed a lot of inflammation in the area where the tendon attaches to the bone.I had along wait for a cortisone injection and it was totally ineffective.My OS said it didn't work as by that time the inflammation had settled and the continued groin pain was from scar tissue.I also read on someone else's thread that a CT scan is the gold standard for diagnosing post op soft tissue problems but I was never offered one.hope Josephine will be able to give you some advice

Hi @Kim22 , Thank you for your information! Yes your right, feels like I'm on my own. I will just have to take everything real slow and one day at a time. I just don't know how long this will take to subside, 1 month or 1 year. Well, thanks again for info and take care, Scott

@scottfamilyman Apparently 4% of THR patients go on to develop Psoas Tendinitis and being one of them is very lonely especially when it seems the rest of your gang are fully recovered and getting back to normal life.All I can say to reassure you is that it does get better in the end.I would estimate that I am about 80% better but still have aches and pains in that hip from time to time but to put this into perspective so do most people who have hip replacements.Once I had a diagnosis I made sure that I rested from activities that irritated the hip flexors.I resumed going upstairs like a toddler and avoided walking inclines and on soft sand.I saw a physio who gave me stretches like the ones in the article which certainly helped and I then progressed to exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip as they were very weak..Eventually I got back to both Pilates and yoga classes and managed both well until the ,arthritis in hip#2 reared its ugly head and I was back to square one.I am having this one replaced in September.Oh yes massage therapy helped too.Thinking of you and hoping you start to improve very soon.
Kim

@Kim22 , It's nice to hear those reassuring words. Right now it just seems that this will last forever. I know it won't so I still need to stay positive. Ya, I will have to have my right hip replaced eventually. I have AVN and arthritis. :( The OS doesn't want to do anything yet until all my pain is gone in the left hip. I'm happy for your recovery! :) I don't want to start up PT again until the groin burn and stinging goes away. I hope I'm doing the right thing! Thanks again for your support and take care, Scott

He and my OS told me that I can't have a mri because of the medal (titanium) in my hip. Everything would reflect off of it. IS THIS TRUE?
Actually, no it's not! As you can see here MRI scans and joint replacements, it's just a case of a radiographer who knows what he's doing and can adjust the exposure.
He also said to keep taking the ibuprofen instead of Tylenol because of my inflammation. He said no to the cortisone shot because it messes with the bone after hip replacement.
That would be funny if it wasn't so ironic. NSAIDs (ibuprofen is one) are widely reputed to suppress the development of new bone cells and to the best of my knowledge, cortisone does not. But there's no reason you can't take the Tylenol anyway as unlike the ibu, it's a definitive pain killer where ibu is not.

@Kim22 , I forgot to ask you, did you ice all the time and how long did it take before you could stretch or do strengthening exercises? I ice about 3 to 4 times a day. I actually just changed the way I take my ibuprofen. Instead of taking ibuprofen 800 3 to 4 times a day, I now ibuprofen 800+400(1200mg) 3×daily. I'll see how this works out. It doesn't seem to bother me. I'll just make sure I have food in my stomach. Thanks for your ear! Scott

@scottfamilyman Hi Scott To answer your questions ; regarding ice I am not a great lover of ice especially in the winter months but I do remember using a heat/ ice contrast which is a method I read about on a great book, Heal your Hips by Robert Klapper.You apply heat for 15 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of ice and repeat always finish with ice.I did this 3 times a day and it seemed to help a little and at least it didn't make things worse which is the important bit.I felt I was being proactive at least.I started the stretches as soon as I was diagnosed as advised by the radiologist.I did a gentle kneeling hip flexor stretch and a lying down quad stretch as shown in the article on here.I was told to stop if there was any increase in pain.I also did a psoas relaxing routine after stretching by resting my legs on a chair.About a month later I saw the physio who gave me strengthening exercises.I started very slowly with these.
I can't remember when things started to improve but it did keep coming and going for a while especially when I did too much activity for example when I helped my mother move house I suspect it was all the stooping I did as I was careful not to lift heavy weights.
I should also mention that when I was about 6 weeks I twisted awkwardly and felt a horrible pain in the thigh as the inflammation was in the area where the tendon inserts into the bone I suspect I tore the tendon then which caused inflammation later when I became more active which resulted in the scar tissue I am left with.I am thinking about this as I am typing and In my humble opinion this is why the stretching is important to try and reduce the scar tissue.Of course your situation may be different to mine.Are you still seeing a PT who can give you some good advice ?
I was warned by the radiologist that there is a risk of a cortisone injection into the psoas causing tendon rupture.He said this was very rare and he had never seen it happen but nevertheless it was a risk.
I hope this will be of some use to you and if you get a minute it may be useful for you to read through my thread which is called;
Psoas Tendinitis 9 months after THR.Sorry I have no idea how to do a link but if you enter that title in the search thing it should bring up the thread.

Hi @Kim22 , once again, thank you for your advice and info. Ya, my OS said no to cordazone shot because of a chance of rupture. Actually today was the 1st day I woke up with super tight tendon without the stinging. I just got done doing some VERY LIGHT stretching. It wasn't too bad! :) I think I just way over stretched everytthing. Now it'sstarting to fall back Iin place I think. I haven't seen my PT for 2 months because I wanted to get rid of all the burning and stinging. I know I'm getting close. I just may not go back to PT because I know what to do now. I will read your blogs and keep using heat and ice for awhile. It's like everybody says, THINGS WILL GET BETTER! I know my body the best! Well, thank you very much and I wish you SUCCESS on your next surgery and healing. Take care, Scott

Thanks Scott I must say that despite the time it took for my recovery last time I am still more than ready to have the second hip done as the pre op pain is so horrible and debilitating.I am glad that you are seeing an improvement already but I would stress that you should keep those stretches at a low level for now.Things will get better you just need bucket loads of patience.Keep us up to date on your progress.
