@shrinkette Wonderful! Soon all this horrible waiting will be over and you'll be talking about how amazed you are that the horrible pain is gone!

Love,
Milli

So glad you are good to go @shrinkette ! Babble all you want - that's what this forum is for! Sounds like you hip is now helpfully confirming it's time to go. Happens very often. For me it was almost a final reality check. I had been fighting the pain for so long and finally gave into it. In my case I had no choice but THR - but it did help that there was motivation behind it. Almost there! :happydance:

terrific ellen. I bet you're really ready now ! yay for bagels and ice cream! see you on the other side very soon.

You will do fine. My surgery is January 30. I'm in horrible bone on bone in both hips. We both will be getting better day by day on the other side of recovery .lets do this

@jebrig3164 Thanks for the encouraging words. I extend the same to you as you follow me 2 days later, as well as to @DrToonz & @grandma chris, our surgical buddies.

Jeff, I have followed your thread & totally understand your fears. I don't think anyone goes into this without some degree of apprehension -- even if we're at the point, pain-wise, of being ready to JUST DO IT & bite the so-called bullet. I just know I'm SO tired of hurting & of my limited life ... It's just so exhausting in every way.

I also read of your fantastic weight loss. I, like others here, applaud this incredible accomplishment. With that kind of fortitude & motivation, I don't doubt for a minute that you can get through your THR as successfully as anyone else -- overweight or not. And I am, too! And my OS didn't seem to be the least but concerned! And he is proud if his terrific statistics!

Jeff, I'll tell you something: even with all the interaction, advice, & support I've gotten here, I only know what to expect in general terms. We're all different, have varying pain tolerances, differing emotional & physical reactions to medical procedures, and just plain different BODIES which are in varying stages of aging & fitness.
So... all we can do is hope for the best, trust our "mechanics", & exercise whatever faith you have. It will be what it will be -- but it will be better than it IS.

I've said this many times: I couldn't have come this far as sanely without BS. We'll all be ok.

Thanks like you said it will be better than what it is . My life is so limited and has gotten so small. I'm ready to do it and make the attempt of getting my life back. I'm tired of hurting and depending on people. I'm 45 years old and want more fun days and I know you do to. I'm following you and praying your success in regaining your mobility pain free!!!!

@sharonslp & anyone else with an opinion: Hello, my friend. Wondering if you can answer a question that occurred to me as I head down the homestretch: I've been using Tylenol for pain exclusively. As we well know it hardly touches b-on-b pain; I guess I fool myself that it takes the edge off. Probably not; nevertheless I take 1,000 mgs 3x/day. Am wondering whether I may have built up a tolerance after all this time, even though the surgical pain differs greatly & is more treatable. Do you think it will work post-op somewhere down the road if/when I eventually start to use it again? Thanks!

Ellen

@shrinkette I don't know if a person builds up a tolerance or not. I think it will work down the road post surgery about the same as it always has for you. If you plan to add it in to your post surgery mix, remember that almost all the narcotic pain killers have some acetomeniphen (can't spell that word) in them. It's expressed on the Rx label. Anyway you've gotta remember to figure that amount into the mix so you don't exceed the daily max for the acetomeniphen. The ones I've had have had 325 mg per tablet, plus whatever narcotic agent.

Love,

Milli

@Butterfly Thanks, sweetie, for reminding me that the pain meds usually contain some acetaminophen. Guess I'll have to deal with it down the road.

My husband was given Tramadol for this arthritic flare-up/muscle pull that he's had recently; I don't think they help all that much! Guess different people respond differently.

Hello from a very nervous newbie to this site although I’ve been lurking for months. Need to vent and desperately in need of support and encouragement which I see are the name of the game here.

I’d like to tell you my story and will be as brief as I can: I had a TKR, right knee, at the end of February after suffering for years, getting progressively more disabled. Old story. I was scared out of my mind like many of you, but I did well, spent 5 weeks in a rehab, only about 3½ of which really counted since I had some setbacks: low hemoglobin, the transfusion in hospital, hematoma at about two weeks in, resuturing, and eventually another surgery to correct the problem, requiring a 3-day stay.

I did well in the rehab. Anyway, I came home to bursitis on that leg which resolved with ice, rest and steroids, and just when I thought I was out of the woods and on my way to a new life, my LEFT butt started to hurt. Interestingly enough, throughout the knee issue, I never had a real problem with the opposite hip! The home PT thought it might be a piriformis problem, worked on that, but the pain got progressively worse, even after about 8 sessions. I’ve also had 10 out-patient PT, but no improvement. Pain is in my left butt and down the front/groin area of that leg. I can hear/feel all sorts of interesting snaps and clicks upon certain movement.

To make matters worse, that leg is shorter than the operated leg, so I’m dipping and have had to use heel lifts to try to even me out. Even so, I’m in awful pain & using a walker; local ortho has confirmed my OA in that hip as well as the right hip, which comes as no surprise since knee surgeon had informed me of this initially. I have made an appointment with a hip surgeon – possibly one of several I’ll consult – and I kind of feel like this is hopeless…

Am I the only one who feels this bad and is so debilitated? Rationally, of course, I know the answer to that, but I’m getting crazy. Believe it or not, I’m a licensed psychotherapist… isn’t that funny? Heal thyself? Hah!!

My hip is so painful now I just can’t imagine the post-op stuff. How do you move? I’ve watched videos of getting in/out of bed… been practicing, but boy! I’m 69, in otherwise decent health, but totally sedentary… need to knock off some weight if I can before this ordeal; I’m sure it would be helpful and safer.

Anyway… I understand I’ve been rambling. Forgive me… it’s just comforting knowing that’s you’re all out there sharing. Would love to hear from you. Just hope I can figure out how to find responses. Thanks for listening. ;>)

Shrinkette and Butterfly, I can't emphasize enough that the pain "disappears". I was standing on the same day of my operation and I was walking the halls of the hospital on the next day. No pain goes a long way. I am not a superman and if I can do it so can you. My second hip was done August 1 2013. It does take the better part of a year to heal and I still have some muscle tiredness but I am now walking around the lake about 1 1/2 miles per day. Fear not - bring it on.

Not all narcotics contain acetaminophen but some like Vicodin do. I was prescribed Oxycodone and Tylenol when I left the hospital - later switched to Vicodin and less Tylenol - now moving to Tylenol only. It is the narcotics they want you off before surgery because those you do build up a tolerance to and then they are not as effective after surgery. I would not worry about using Tylenol this next few days if it helps you. I felt for arthritis pain it was not that great but all I was allowed the last week.

@shrinkette Hi Ellen, here's a link to a thread about using Tylenol and Ibuprofen for pain management post-op. You can certainly take Tylenol but as the thread says, you need to make sure you stay within the recommend daily dose. I wouldn't recommend this "cocktail" when you are just post-op as it probably won't manage the pain in the first few weeks. But many of our members transition to this combo.

Yay @shrinkette what fabulous news!!!!! You will do fine....when I went to outpatient rehab the knee people suffered a lot more thanks hippies....I think the worst thing we have is the restrictions but its not all bad.

I seemed to have less pain in my hip in the weeks prior to the surgery which put doubt in my mind. After the surgery I asked the Dr if it really needed doing??? He laughed and said that we had already established that and it was a mess!!!

I can imagine how frustrating it must have been to have your surgery canx I would have screamed and screamed and screamed. But how lucky are you that they picked up that infection? They never screened my urine prior to surgery (that I can remember) seems a super good idea to me as UTIs are one of the things they warn against after surgery

I see my specialist on the 28th too....so we can sweat it out together.

One last trivial question.....how much is a pint of Ben and jerrys in the states? They charge us $12. Can u believe that????

I'm really happy that you can finally get moving on your lif
