Scared newbie... Hip is shot. What if it doesn't work!!??

At our hip replacement class we were told you only go to rehab if there's a medical reason. But I do know people who have gone because they lived in a situation they couldn't handle yet like alone or a house where it was difficult for them to maneuver.

Probably the best place if you need a lot of help but I believe a lot of physical therapy is not the best thing in the first week. If you don't feel confident being at home or if your husband is still hurting it might be a good idea to get stronger in rehab first

I went home on 2nd day after surgery after showing I could get up and down, to the bathroom and do stairs

@dickinson @charmed-life thanks, guys.

Devorah, hoping hubby will be given a decent pain killer & maybe muscle relaxant & that he'll be fine. He's pretty tired due to missing some sleep, & we all know what pain does! Somehow I don't think men handle it as well, & HE'S definitely not used to it! (sorry to generalize unfairly). Rehab seems to have done its job for you ...great! And...

Pat, my doc said most of his patients go home, and that "we'll see how I do". It may actually depend on how hubby comes along. He's been doing everything! I fully understand that too much PT too soon is BAD. I have no urge whatsoever to do anything other than following our beloved mantra & the initial gentle exercises I may be told to do. I hate exercise anyway! Josephine says walking around a little each day is best for hips, but probably long-term I'll need to strengthen all kinds of things -- very long-term. If a PT comes to house in the initial phase, I won't allow her to inflict pain, trust me.

I hope that after my hip is done I'll be able to raise that leg enough to get it on a normal step or curb. No can do at the moment. That would be so lovely.

Why am I so exhausted?!

Babble, babble, worry, vent, babble. Wish it were over.
Love you guys,
Ellen

Ellen you should get a big improvement in range of motion. Hope the test went well and then that the week goes fast

@shrinkette I hope things work out that you'll get great news tomorrow and you'll be able to get your surgery done! Thinking of you often. I understand the nerves, mine are about completely shot right now! I know I've made the right decision, just nervous! Please let us know when you find out. Won't be long now and we will both have shiny new hips!

@karisa7174 Thanks... Thinking of you, too, for Wednesday. I'm practically vibrating. Don't know what I'll do if my test is still positive... which only increases my anxiety. You absolutely KNOW I will be thinking great thoughts for you. The end of the first part is near -- gotta hope it's the beginning of great, shiny things.

Ellen

@shrinkette sorry you have to wait another day for your results. Waiting is such a drag, and also you are absolutely right about the "limbo" feeling and being sick and tired of doing nothing -- just marking time.

About rehab -- my surgeon is not a fan of going to rehab unless there is a compelling medical reason. He says going to rehab ups the chances of getting an infection and really doesn't help in recovery unless you are very frail. Believe me, you will feel a lot better the day you leave the hospital than you did the day you go in. After the surgery, even in the very early days, I got around the house much better with my walker than I hada been able to do before. You're probably envisioning much more post op pain than you will actually have. I was amazed at how little pain I had (I mean with taking my meds as prescribed). You should be fine at home with your husband there. After the first day or two, I was fine on my own, except I wouldn't go in the shower without my DIL or someone else being in the house within shouting distance. One thing I'd suggest is to be sure you write down when you take your pain meds. I found that when I was on the stronger stuff it was too easy to forget exactly what time I'd taken a dose and I sure didn't want to take too much.

You and your surgeon can make the rehab decision after the surgery. I do believe that in order for medicare and supplements to pay for rehab you have to spend three nights in the hospital. For my first surgery I only spent two nights in there, so couldn't have changed my decision about rehab after I left.

Love,

Milli

@Butterfly. You know you never fail to make me feel better! What you say about post-op pain & how I'll feel & act after leaving the hospital is so... positive! It IS very hard for me to picture most of what's been described. I do hope I get the right pain meds; trust me, I am no martyr & have been in pain too long to sacrifice any possible comfort, let alone healing possibility.

Btw, how hard is it to get dressed post-op?

Interesting what your OS said about rehab. I sure hope I do ok enough not to go! I know my doc said 3 days in hospital.

Wondering why I'm so tired from doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Wondering if it could be effects of 1,000 mgs daily of Cipro antibiotic. Finished it yesterday. Anxiety maybe? And now that hubby is kind of out of commission... He went to an ortho today: it's arthritis! Guess it kicked in when he moved that heavy thing. Doc gave him 12-hour patches, Tramadol, & a muscle relaxant to take before bed. Oh - and a cortisone shot. Hope they work. I feel like gulping some of that Tramadol!! Not.

Tomorrow is your day!! Hoping you get some answers and direction so you can move on. I sense you're in your own form of limbo... Please let me know what OS says.

Love
Ellen

@shrinkette . Sending prayers that you're given the go ahead for surgery. Reading up on your doc and his MIS/makoplasty procedure, and no restrictions after surgery, sounds like you'll be off to a great start. Take it steady, slow. Thinking fondly of you. God bless you and your hubby, too....xo

@shrinkette. Hoping that your test comes back ok....no wonder you're exhausted...a UTI, pain, worry anxiety...and your poor hubby too! Small wonder eh?
Please don't worry about when you come home from hospital....as Butterfly says there is pain from the surgery, but nothing like the pain you are having
Now...I was able to walk around, make my own breakfast quite easily....for short periods and then nap. Getting dressed was easy with the help of a grabber...you put the grabber through a whole in the panties, non operated leg always first, pull up and then again with the other leg. I wore PJ bottoms for a few weeks , using the same method. Honestly no problems... The only big deal for me was the TED stockings, which my hubby did for me. I showered from day 1 home. You get really tired for a small amount of activity. I had restrictions for 12 weeks ( cos I had smaller prothesis) but that turned out yo be OK too. You get used to it very quickly. By day 3 home I was able to sit on my perching stool and make soup ( and then nap) and was walking a fair way. I made the mistake of overdoing the walking and got a bit stiff, but the cut back. It us a whole lot worse in your mind honey. Thinking of you and your hubby too. Chrissie xxx

@Shrinkettte Hoppy is right on. As to getting dressed, I think it was easier after the surgery than before it -- I was VERY crippled up before the surgery, so everything seemed easier after. I didn't have much energy or appetite or attention span (from the pain meds) and I dozed a lot.

If you are like me, the tiredness you are feeling now is probably anxiety and a bit of depression (nothing in your life right now you want to be awake for, right?). When I get overwhelmed, all I want to do is sleep (after the panic subsides) -- not to mention that dealing with the pain you are dealing with now has GOT to be very hard on the nervous system.

I hope your husband gets to feeling better very soon.

PS: say a little prayer for me tomorrow -- I go back to the surgeon at 11:00. That pain is a little better, and I am not so panicky about it now, just impatient and frustrated. I want my life back! I am so tired of taking it easy I could just scream!

Love,

Milli

@charmed-life Thanks for asking. NO! I just wrote to Butterfly that I feel like I'm strung so tight I could snap. (Not to worry -- I don't mean in the psychotic sense!) I can't even feel nervous about an op I MAY NOT HAVE after all this time. What'll I do if it's still positive? I'm so sick of cranberry juice, I can't tell you!

You know -- as I get closer to surgery, the pain in my hip is worse. In my head or real? I swear it's localizing more & I feel it now where it didn't used to bother me much... Like lying on my good side. Bad hip just aches, radiating to inside thigh as well as outside. Ugh! Tylenol is indeed worthless at this point.

And @Hibbe Thanks for reading up on my doc & MAKOplasty. Hope it's as good as it sounds. You've done phenomenally -- just wonderful. You're an inspiration.

Hi,
I felt much like you - more pain as my surgery date grew closer. It actually "helped" get me ready - my surgery couldn't come soon enough! I'm sorry that you feel so much pain. However, despite the pain, I find it interesting as I read your threads, that you seem less anxious about the surgery and even frustrated that you might be delayed (of course I hope not!). You've come so far and I will keep you in prayer, dear friend! How's hubby? Xo

Well, folks ... IT'S A GO!!! My UA came back negative & "fine" according to GP's PA, & she was faxing result to surgeon. Soooooo.... unless surgeon's office reschedules for some reason, I'm on for next Tuesday, 1/28! Due at hospital @ 7:30 am. I guess I'll be in touch with OS's office tomorrow.

I feel as if the wind has been knocked out of me, meaning an enormous release of tension & anxiety. Limbo was not a pleasant place to reside. When I called my home today from outside & got the message, I cried... actually sobbed... from relief. Hubby & I had just finished sharing a bagel & lox @ our favorite neighborhood place where we sat outside & enjoyed the beautiful sunshine (sorry, folks who are up to their ears in that white stuff!!). Actually, it was so chilly here that we retreated to the car! And then we bought a pint of Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream to celebrate, and scurried home to split it! Could that possibly be the reason for a tummy-ache right now!?

Yes, I'm relieved to be going forward. Now it's getting real-er. As I've mentioned, the pain seems worse -- almost as if I'm at the end of the proverbial line & have nowhere to go but up, as in better! I don't have any idea if this makes sense... I'm obviously babbling from both relief & exhaustion & the release of lots of nervous tension.

I guess I'm as prepared as I can be, having spent about 4 months digesting all this great information. Even though I KNOW intellectually what to expect, I can't picture how I'll feel or the many other variables that are a part of this process. Guess it'll be an interesting ride.

Thank you all for your support & concern throughout this emotional journey. It's been so wonderful to have a place like this to turn to. More to come, of course. I've still got 5 more days of babbling!

@shrinkette I am so happy to hear this good news! Yes!!!! We will all be here for you every step of the way! Woohoo! Peggy xoxo
