@bMadowa. Hi, Peggy. Am doing ok, but anxious as to result of new urinalysis on Monday which would determine whether surgery on 1/28 is a go. Don't know what to be more nervous about! Thanks for asking.

How're YOU doing?

Ellen

I'm doing great. Today is day 11 and i seem to be coasting along with nothing happening out of the ordinary. So your test is this Monday? Or are u waiting for results? I know what you mean by not knowing what to be more nervous about ! I'll keep my fingers crossed that test results are ok so you can move forward. Waiting is the pits. Hang in there ! Peggy. Xoxo

@Madowa. Yep, test is Monday.

I forgot: what sort of condition were you in physically in terms of mobility & pain when you had your surgery? It seems to me I'm the worst one here, but that can't be true. I'll look for your original thread, but am not sure ill find it. Thanks, Peggy.

@shrinkette , fingers and toes crossed for you on Monday my friend. Just a little bump in the road!

@Jaycey. Aw, thanks. I hope it'll be ok so i can focus on the op. I would've been starting recovery now if this happened, but oh well. Not nervous so much about actual surgery, but about my eventual recovery process since I'm so disabled and unfit NOW. I read all these posts from folks in their 30s, 40s, & 50s who have exercised in some way almost until surgery day or at least a few months before, who are lifetime gym rats, or who've consistently played some sport they're dying to get back to. This never was me -- at my best!

Having gotten progressively worse about 2 months after Knee Replacement in opposite leg, I'm hunched over, can't straighten up on 'good' side, barely make it around house using walker, have to-be operated leg longer than other, etc. Although I knew it was arthritic, hip had not been a problem until after knee. All this since April/May.

I know I've said all this on various posts at one time or another, but guessing I need some reassurance. Thank you.

Ellen

Aw Ellen, I too was totally disabled pre-op. My hip collapsed and I could hardly get around. That and major back problems meant I was not moving without major planning. I certainly was never a gym rat and have not played sport for year and years. Back problems tend to change things like that.

Right now you are seeing the "you" that has mobility issues due to the pain. It's very hard to image that there could be another "you". But I think you will be very pleasantly surprised. That first step post-op, well something big is missing - THE PAIN. Sure there is the recovery. Slow and steady. And you will need patience to get those muscles strengthened since you have been walking all wrong. It will take time but you will get there!

Will you be having PT post-op? It might be an idea since you may need some help getting that weaker side straightened again.

@shrinkette. Please don't worry...before my surgery I was walking for 9 months with a wheelchair as a walking aid...as one hip shot and the other not so good...so my fitness level was at nil....My mobility since THR is so much better....I can walk as far as I want now....I'll never be superfit but can at least be 'normal'. Hope your tests come back ok....wishing you well. Chrissie xxx

@Jaycey & @Hoppy Nanny Thanks so much for your quick, reassuring responses. You always make me feel better.

Jaycey, was particularly interested in your account of some bad sciatica while still in the hospital, although it had apparently been a long-term issue for you. How is it now? Mine is there only since knee surgery on that side.

I'm hanging in there. Doing my best.

Ellen

@shrinkette I was never a fitness fanatic but I did go to the gym for the past two years. I lost 125 pounds about two years ago thinking it would alleviate the hip pain. It did not. Gained 30 back over the past year because I just couldn't walk or exercise as much as I needed to. I'm still 50 pounds overweight. So my mobility in General was good before surgery, just have had serious weight problems. Please try not to worry. Everyone brings their own uniqueness to this journey and we all have different recoveries. I will bet that you will see a great improvement after your hip is done and you will recover just fine. We will all be here helping you and cheering you on, too! Peggy xoxo

Hi Ellen, @shrinkette, your pre surgery anxieties are real, especially as one gets closer and closer to the date. I was immobile for 8 years to varying degrees. The final 18 months using a walker leaning on my elbows as I couldn't straighten up with severe back issues (that neurosurgeons have indicated it is too risky to operate on) and very severe hip complications. The final insult for me medically was when they discovered I had lost over 60% kidney function in both kidneys and surgery would have its challenges..

But dear Ellen, I hope the sense of peace comes over you that quite a few of us experience a day or so before surgery, it is a sense that we are ready.. I read this last night and thought if you immediately...

"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow. Time is the best doctor, you will get there and recovery will be yours."

Good luck for Monday, I am sure there will be no more surprises and you will be full steam ahead :)

@Poppet. Thank you so much for that wonderful, touching quotation. It really hit home. I know that when the time for surgery comes, I will go calmly, hoping for the very best outcome with the knowledge also that there is no choice if I want more quality of life. I have gained so much from your advice, insight, and experience. BS has truly been invaluable! And...

@Madowa. I am so happy that you are doing well... "coasting along", as you put it. I hope to do my own coasting pretty soon! I went back & read your old posts... Do you realize how different you sound now?!

Can't think of a sufficient way to express my gratitude to everyone who has been helping me get to this point.

Ellen, we just look forward to hearing sounding better and better and more hopeful for the future! Not too long now - keep drinking lots of water!

Sorry I didn't respond to your tag, shrinkette, but I've been on leave. I'm intrigued your surgeon wouldn't operate as it's very common for females to have low grade bladder infections and normally, 48hrs on antibiotics is more than enough to cover things.

@Josephine. Thanks for responding. Guess maybe my OS errs on the side of caution. Tomorrow's my 6th & last day on Cipro, & Monday I'll be retested. Do hope it's a go for 1/28!! And hope all is well with YOU. :)

Ellen

hi ellen @shrinkette. waiting to hear it's a 'go' and you're on the way to surgery and recovery. very inspiring to hear all these people who were in such bad shape before feeling so good now. you will too.

@dickinson Thanks, Devorah. Submitted the "sample" today; should know answer tomorrow evening. Very nervous about it -- what if still positive? To further complicate matters, hubby hurt his back or side after dragging something heavy through grass & has been in a lot of pain; right now he is in ortho office checking it out. Pretty sure he pulled a muscle, but that can be pretty painful for awhile.

These last days waiting are not only so difficult as everyone says, but I find that I am exhausted from doing nothing!! Just lying on my bed, pretty much... Walking to kitchen for meals... Walking to computer when iPad
doesn't suffice, & working there. Difficult to even make the effort to shower. Wish I was "there" already. Feeling very much in limbo... An odd and disturbing place.

Can I ask you why you opted for a rehab? So many people seem to go home unless they're alone, it seems. I don't know what will be right for me.

Mainly, how ARE you doing? So far, your reports sound quite good, with things going along uneventfully. That's. what I want: uneventful!

Ellen

@shrinkette..I went to rehab for a few reasons. I live alone and I didn't want my kids to have to jump thru hoops to make sure I was taken care of. also I wanted to be there when they took out the staples, which I guess wasn't that important because someone could have come to me to do it. and also I thought I needed more confidence in my strength and abilities before I came home. I think I accomplished all my goals. even tho I only had PT for a half hour each day, it moved quickly and each day I felt more and more confident. the last day we took a short walk outside which really made a difference in how ready I felt. but 5 days was enough. and then coming home, which is a bit jarring anyway, was just right. and now, as I said, everything I just going so well, thank God. hang in. sorry about your husband. I guess he's been carrying a lot. now he can ice, elevate, rest...can you guys get someone in to do the stuff he was doing? so let us know the results and then, bring it on. btw..could you go to rehab and then decide to leave if it's not right?
