THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

Still have the benefit of the cocktail they insert during surgery and took 10mg of Norco (hydrocodone) 3 hours ago so doing well. It helps that no muscles were cut. Pain is mainly incision and groin. Both helped by constant ice. I have my alarm set for the next dose in 1 hour. My plan is to take 5mg every 2 hours after that and 10mg ever 4 hours through night (will set alarm but last time around, my bladder was the only alarm I needed).

@danabanana What's your poison? You can send some rocky road or butter pecan my way! I'm thinking the dairy would be helpful in preventing nausea from the meds. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :snork:

Have you ever tried Talenti gelato @SaraK
Dangerous!

Hmmm - I haven't but it sounds like you think it has medicinal properties @Layla - I might need to do a scientific study comparing the effects of each. Of course, that would require multiple doses of each medicine and multiple participants. Anyone else want to volunteer in the name of science?

Sara what type of surgery did you have , my dr still dislocates ,

@tyorke1 SuperPath - instead of dislocation, they cut the capsule and the sew back at end. Avoids some of the stress on muscles, tendons, etc. No muscles cut (but may cut piriformis tendon) so that also aids recovery.

Oh yes, definite healing properties @SaraK
Have you not heard Sea Salt Carmel helps eliminate swelling
Southern Butter Pecan......excellent for stiffness
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup works really well for sore knees @danabanana
The stuff is evil right along with Ben and Jerrys. Never met one I didn't like, haha!

Nice, pretty sure mine still does old fashion posterior , Getting mine done wed, not worried about the surgery just those crazy precautions,

@jaydub63 While double blind is the gold standard and would have the greatest acceptance, I'm not sure how we could do that unless we were comparing brands. I think I'd know if I wasn't getting ice cream and would drop out of the study. There is no placebo for ice cream or gelato.

@SaraK agreed. I think we'll just have to accept that the results won't be published in JAMA. My drug of choice at this time of year is peppermint stick ice cream with copious amounts of Sanders dark chocolate fudge sauce.

Welcome to the other side (again). You are now an official member of the double hippie club! You know the drill but I'll post your recovery articles here just in case you need an update:
Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

Pain management and the pain chart
Healing: how long does it take?
Chart representation of THR recovery
Dislocation risk and 90 degree rule
Energy drain for THRs
Pain and swelling control: elevation is the key
Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it
Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?
BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Glad you are on the healing side.
Sounds like you are doing very well.
Yay for bye bye hip pain...hello life!

Just woke up and plan to take a shower in a bit but want to wait for my son to wake up so that (heaven forbid) if something happens and I need assistance, he'll be available.

Last night went well. I slept in about 3-4 hour stretches for a total of about 10 hours. When I'm sitting or lying in my recliner, the pain's only about a 1 or 2, even when close to time for meds. When I'm walking, it's more of a 3 or 4 but still not too bad. I've been able to lengthen the stride a little today - at about 1/2 -3/4 normal stride using the walker and probably putting about 3/4 weight on the operated side.

I don't have the 90 degree or rotational restrictions which makes life much easier. I can bend down far enough to put on and take off the compression cuffs or pull up my socks but not put the socks on. All in all, not too bad for the morning after surgery!

@MammaT - I'll be interested in how SwiftPath differs from SuperPath and will hope you raise the bar!

Amazing!!!!! I'm seriously in awe of this. I'm day 13 and haven't been able to shower by myself....and that's sitting on a shower chair!

@danabanana Well I'm certainly not going to have my 16 YO son or 22 YO son help me! :heehee:
. Last time around I stayed at the hospital overnight and occupational therapist was there to help but didn't need to do anything. Shades of showering after gym glass - shudder!

it will definitely be a quick shower but I can stand and take a step or two without the walker.

Keep in mind there is still alot of deep healing to happen...I can see less invasive causing one to get on the move a little too early on.
I had no restrictions on release but I still have ones I place on myself as my body dictates.
Just want these hips to last hopefully forever with no complications:chuckmarch:
