Jebsw Thanks for commenting! I think I will be facing the same challenges as you have been but I won't know until I get there, lol! I hate the thought of having any added pain to the already funky left knee...but like you I would rather have it done and over with...the LONG process of healing and recovering are gonna do me in me thinks...:heehee::rolleyes:! How are you doing now? I see that you had the 2nd one done in August...

I live on the east coast of Newfoundland, a little piece of paradise (at least I think so :) ) !

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, have a great weekend!

As I recall, all of Newfoundland looks like paradise! My August knee is coming along okay. Very rough day yesterday, but after a really good sleep aided by exhaustion, it's feeling better. The energy drain is a drag. But I know it'll get better, whereas without the surgery it would only have gotten worse. :)

A Baker's cyst (I had one too) is a symptom of a knee in trouble!! I had mine removed when they did the tkr. My doc told me it would go away by itself--but, I wanted to make sure.

For anyone having trouble bending that knee, all I can say is massage, massage, massage. Tight muscles means knee won't bend. I am seeing progress with new therapist after first one gave up and said MUA, and I felt like telling him to stick his MUA where the sun don't shine. Weather it is your therapist, your spouse or a hand held device, or your own hands just do it. Hard for me as I have arthritis in my hands, so that is where the hand held device with a heater works wonders.

Yes, Newfoundland is a very scenic place. Where I live we have the pretty beaches and the pretty fishing communities...my display pic is of one of the beaches here, soon will have to change it to another.

The energy drain was hard to cope especially with two small kids. True though that it would only keep getting worse without the surgery.

skigirl I don't think its an option at this point to have the Baker's Cyst to be removed so I have to wait for it to go away on its own. Its been not such a fun experience with this I tell ya...its incredible how painful this can be.

Since you had yours removed, your knee has been fine?

Debbie_joints I cannot bend my knee because of a Baker's Cyst and this has impeded the progress and set me back some with my ROM. I haven't as of yet tried massage but think its a good idea because my quad has tightened up since this Baker's Cyst trouble. Thank you for your suggestion.

Tessa, I think that if the LPKR takes care of the knee issues, the Baker's cyst will dry up and more or less disappear. They get big from the drainage of an inflamed knee. If the inflammation goes away, the cyst should improve.

If it continues to be a problem, talk to your OS. They can drain the cyst and that might be enough to make it go away at this stage. K

Kelly, I had a LPKR back in May and its since that surgery that the Baker's Cyst has become an issue in that same knee. I am having a RPKR in a couple of weeks so the OS won't do anything about the Baker's Cyst at this time...so I just gotta hope it will clear up on its own asap!

Baker's cysts are extremely difficult to remove. The space at the back of the knee is not easy to access and contains a major artery and vein which are similar difficult to move aside as they are quite tight in there. A situation many surgeons refer to as "tiger country" and not without good reason. If things are made even tighter by the presence of the bursa, then it's even more difficult. And bearing in mind that these bursae (a Baker's cysts is a bursa) invariably drain into the joint and go away, the risk is really not worth it. The same goes for draining it with a needle and syringe........

I am not doing anything specifically for this Baker's Cyst now that I no longer go to PT, it was doing more harm than good. I have been using ice after I have been on my knee for a while, overdoing it as usual...! Its very hard to not overdo with with two little kids and the keeping up with them. That being said, its slowly getting better I think and I can once again bend the knee a little more without too much discomfort.

I am just worried how the knee going to react to being the main leg to stand on so to speak for a couple of weeks or so and if it will cause the Baker's Cyst to get worse.

One good thing about having had the one knee partially replaced already is that I know its not a quick 4-6 week fix, I was shocked at that the last time. It was one of the main things that really got me down and stressed out, I tried harder an pushed harder than I should have to get the knee mobile and working in that 4-6 week time span just to have it make the whole process longer because I overworked the knee...lesson learned I hope!!

Whether I am ready for the 2nd replacement or not its just a little over a day away....I am as ready for it as I can be! Looking at all the positives in that I know what's going to happen after I have it, not be oblivious to it like I was 5 and 1/2 months ago...! The nerves keep acting up and I have been keeping really busy trying to not think of the surgery...its like my little girl said to me yesterday, 'just imagine mom, next year this time we will be hiking again." I am holding onto that and that is one of my goals, that and downhill skiing!

I am going to need some pointers from Sonja and BJ though as to how best to train for the next year's ski season and find out what bubble wrap gear is most in fashion.:rotfl: Not sure if bungee jumping is still on the agenda and maybe we can slip sky diving in...

Thanks Jo...! I am usually a positive person but the left knee was kicking my butt for a bit there and it got me down. I am going in the early morning and will be home again late afternoon...long day for sure. Pain meds, have some but not sure how I will react to them...! No gonna worry about that at the moment though!

Its been done, I now have 2 pkrs L & R....atm all I can say is OUCH! :yikes: Hoping that tomorrow it will settle down some...

Josephine I was looking for on here what I think was referred to as the BS Cocktail, I cannot seem to find it. I am having so so much pain that I am overwhelmed and wondering if that would help...thanks!

Well hello there Just!

I thought you had your vocal cords removed because we haven't heard from you in a while! :heehee:

As for the knee question, I had mine done 2 1/2 months apart because of my high risk to infection. But, I am glad I had time between! I know, people say get it over with at once, but I am so thankful that my doctor would not consider it! :happydance:

The first knee went great, and I started asking for a new knee in the other at 8 weeks, and after I got fit in his busy schedule it was eight and 1/2 weeks. If MRSA had not attacked the second knee I would already be doing ALL of my "bucket list" items! As it stands right now, a few will come in the future but life is o much better than before replacements!

I'll tell you what. Shhhhhhh.... Don't want any moderators to listen in on my conversation, but I will let you be the first to bungee jump off the bridge to make sure the cord is strong is enough to spring back, but not so long as to splat you into the water like a squished bug! :)
No need to thank me for my generous offer, that's what friends are for! :rotfl:

I get to go 1st eh? How very generous of you....:heehee:! In that case you get to try out the parachute first on the skydive, hope you don't mistakenly attach the bungee cord , look up, loooooooooooooooook waaaaaaaaaaaay up, its a bird, its a plane, no, its a yo-yo named Sonja! :rotfl:
