Hinged Joint Revision Complete, recovery continues

@Pumpkln popping in to say hi. How is the knee today? I feel as though I have taken several steps backwards in the past 2-3 days.
I think about our poor bikes, wish they could have a visit together :heehee: since they won't get out for awhile. But they will be out someday. I have to keep the faith around that.
Hope your day is going well.

@Pumpkln, glad you are doing so well. I think, again, we are at about the same place. I have pretty much retired my cane now, I only grab it if I've done too much and am in pain, which happens less every day. We went out to play pool today; unfortunately I only lasted through one game with all the ups and downs out of the chair for my turns. Next time I plan on 2 games before petering out, and so on. I had also made bread before we went, so that's likely why I only lasted one game instead of two...lol. Congrats on being an advisor-you do know a lot.

@lovetocookandsew ,
We seem to be pretty close in recovery, I can go without the cane inside, but go right back to it when I limp, have pain, or start to get tired.
Managed to walk to the neighbors over a uneven terrain. Went only about 15 ft, did OK if I do say so myself.
Seems like every day a little something improves, the velcro (does not hurt) sound is coming from a smaller area around my knee cap today, I am assuming that is a good thing.
@hopefaith,
I sure hope our bikes can be dug out of all the cobwebs! :biking::biking: And get on the road again.
My knee is moving ahead. There are ups and downs. I keep looking for the little things that are changing, so I can see that I am getting better.

I can't wait to get back on my bike! I haven't been able to ride it much for a while now-it will be great when we can ride once again. I'm glad we are both improving every day-my main problem now is fatigue-I wear out quickly still and have to rest a lot in between. I think most of the fatigue is from being so ill all those weeks and hope to soon be much stronger. I know a little is still from the surgery, but that would be minimal at this point I think, of I had stayed well. Have you been swimming again yet? I overdid it a bit today, now I'm in bed, watching the ballgame and icing and elevating. Sure feels good right now......ahhhhhhhhhhh.:ice::elevate::chillpill:

Stone clinic, yes paste graft was OK lasted about 10 yrs, I was not a poster child. You are the first Bonesmartie to mention the paste graft. I think the procedure is best in younger people.
Thanks for your support and encouragement @trailspud.

In a few words a Paste graft, is when they take cartilage from a non weight bearing site of your knee, (intercondylar notch), and smash it into a paste. Bloody up the damaged surfaces, then paste the graft into the defect. The cells divide and form a new surface. I would say mine survied for 10 years, average is 12 years.

Got up this morning with a knee feeling the best it has in years, that is an improvement. Of course as the day has gone by it is getting tired and sore. Back elevating and icing!
Best way to describe the changes, is my worst day this week will be better than my worst day last week, and my best day this week will be better than my best day last week.

@Pumpkln, they tried that on me-I just didn't know it was called a paste graft-but it didn't take. Apparently the new surface never formed. He also planned to do a surgery called an osteotomy, but when he got in there, the other side of my knee had holes that weren't there when he did the previous surgery, so he couldn't do it. I had 3 or 4 knee surgeries prior to the TKR, but none worked. I don't remember all the details of each one, it was over a period of 7 or 8 years if I recall correctly. I'm glad your knee is doing so much better. Time heals all wounds......

@lovetocookandsew , did you have the carticel procedure (sent a sample to the lab to grow, and put it back in a month later), or did you go to the Stone clinic?
Sounds like your knee has been through quite a lot before TKR .
Glad we are on the road to recovery!

Biking had been wonderful, especially on flat surfaces to start. I find that if I start getting tired I just lower the gear to rest a bit. There are so many people biking and running now on the boardwalk, it's very challenging to ride but in passing them, I give a burst of faster peddling which in itself is good exercise. since I've been doing this, my banding has eased a lot!

I've just recently been able to use the exercycle with out flaring my knee. It's a start.
Cycling sounds wonderful for you @JustJeff , i have enjoyed the photos you have posted. Have fun on your vacation.

@Pumpkln, I'm not sure what I had. I just know he did something that sounds like what you had done-maybe it was the same or maybe it was a different procedure. I just remember him poking holes in the area or roughing it up or something to help it form a new surface somehow, but it never did. It was the second surgery I think-the first he went in and cleaned up all the ragged stuff. I should know all this but it's been quite a few years and many surgeries ago. I've had something like 16 or so surgeries all over my body over the years, hard to remember them all..... I'm using my peddle machine so I think I'll be able to ride my bike once my energy recovers fully.

Sounds like you had a micro fracture. They did that on my tibia.
I agree once our energy returns, and we are sufficently healed, it will be time for biking. You are also healing from being ill early on.
Today started well, think I was too active, very sore tonight.

@Pumpkln, you're probably right as you know much more than I about this stuff. I sure understand overdoing things, I overdid yesterday so am paying for it today. I'v actually had to take pain meds on a regular basis today. Luckily it's the longer lasting one though. But we are both doing well and should do much better with each day that passes.

Chris, I did not know that you had been a ski instructor---did you work at Tahoe? I am still working at Whitefish mtn Resort, but contemplating retirement. I turned 70 in May, so get a free ticket next year.

I worked at Kirkwood and Heavenly Valley 1973 - 1979. We are trying to put a HV reunion together for early Feb.
Seems like yesterday. It was great fun, my ill spent youth :heehee:. Wouldn't change a thing.
My knees worked pretty good then.
Free tickets, sounds good, around here you have to be older, too many seniors.
Hope to snowshoe this winter, too out of shape for skiing.
Thanks for stopping by my thread @skigirl

Hi @Pumpkln, how are you doing? Did you happen to catch the US Portugal FIFA game yesterday. That was crazy!

Best way to describe the changes, is my worst day this week will be better than my worst day last week, and my best day this week will be better than my best day last week.

I love this! It is so true isn't it? I am so pleased that you are seeing some improvement. You have worked very hard at it. I imagine it must be nice to feel the results. I am pleased with my progress thus far too!

Have a great night!

Thanks @71Beetle ,
My iliotibial band went crazy yesterday, called and got in to see a PT (where I work), it released, and I felt better ASAP. Spent the rest of the day getting the edema down, my knee was quite shapely this morning, for me anyway.
Seem to be walking better this morning, presently icing and elevating while watching Italy play Uruguay. Then on the floor for some exercises.
Colbert Report had a hilarious segment about all the different things that would have to happen for USA to move ahead, lots of if, ands, and buts.

I will have to look the Colbert Report up on YouTube. I can't give any jabs to the US team since Canada does not have a team in. :) I have not watched any soccer today but I will have a look at the stats later as I have to see how I am doing in the soccer pool we are running at work. I have Germany winning (along with 11 other people). I have Portugal as my tie breaker so I hope they stay in it!

How do you get the IT band released? I had massage on mine last Friday and it is not bothering me as much but I have never had it released. Sounds wonderful! DOn't you love it when you feel the difference right away? It is almost decadent! :)
