[Bonesmart.org] Randy got a new start on life today
Oh, yes, the monster of the sleepless night attacks yet another "hippie", and he'll be around for a couple of months:gaah:. Just have to get plenty of catnaps during the day and be prepared to watch a lot of mind numbing TV in the wee hours of the morning. There's really nothing much we can do about this phenomenon, so we might as well just be prepared with things to keep us entertained 'til the ability to sleep all night returns.

But this too shall pass---just part of the price we pay for a new pain free hip that will give us our life back. And one day this will all be just a dim memory (can't be soon enough :heehee: ).

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

bottomshollow I wish it could be so easy. Since my 20's i have on an average only slept 5.5-6 hours a night. I am working with a sleep specialist to try to get to 6.5. We shall see. This hip and knee **** is what we call a devils circle. You have a bum leg so you can't move, you gain weight because you can't move your bp goes up because you are over weight be cause of a bum leg that you can't move. Bottom line is if you can't move that leads up to a lot of **** later on in life.

Oh my goodness, Randy, what a [Bonesmart.org] Randy got a new start on life today you find yourself in. Sure hope once recovery is complete that you can get that sleep problem worked out. I usually only sleep about 6 hours, but occasionally I manage 8, but it has always seemed to be enough for me. Now that I'm older, I nap once in a while in the late morning or early afternoon.

Try "bed hopping" for the sleepless nights. I had three options set up in the early weeks...my tempurpedic, the spare bed room, and a recliner with a blanket nearby I could grab. I wandered around from place to place lugging my trusty iPad and ice pack and would eventually get comfy in one of the spots! I am working on reading a novel on my iPad and would read it on night mode, in the dark and generally drift off...the biggest thing is to realize this comes with the surgery and takes a while to resolve. Now I seem to make it through in my bed, but I almost always wake up with the memory of dreaming about pain, or bloody legs, or some equally gross thing. I seem to be having episodes of bone pain at night. This too shall pass.
Take it easy and let your wife take care of you so you have a smooth recovery.

nmscienceteacher, you've got coping with the sleeplessness down to a science:heehee: . It's so much easier on you when you do it your way that's for sure.

Sleep eventually comes, it does improve :)

randy62. Hey friend! How are you??? I hope you have the meds all sorted out and are doing ok. It really does get better each day! Keep us posted. We are all thinking of you!! Sounds like you have a wonderful wife to help you put!!

sandpiper my wife got really really lucky when I married her, drumroll please, but I got blessed when she married me. Everything is good not doing Zumba dancing yet but am getting up and down by myself. Down to 1 Percocet every four hours. Zeke is trying so hard to be good, he has not jumped on me at all as of yet. Tv is boring. Reading is boring and i have 5 more weeks of this. My wife said she would get a wheel chair from church so that i can sit outside. Our sitting area is just way too far for me to walk there and back and then up two stairs into the house without the chair. I am thinking about that.

randy62, Congratulations, Randy! Hope you are feeling better and that the pain is now under control. I'll be right behind you -- my surgery is on Wednesday. :goodpost:

1st day alone with no wife to help. Zeke is trying to be helpful by staying out of the way. I didn't know that Drew Carry had the price is right. When did this happen? And WTH no Jerry springer or Maury ? This is the U.S. of A. Where is my trash TV? My sister's boyfriends baby daddy is my lover? And to tell me that I have to survive 5 more weeks of this, at least i have mt follow up next week. I wonder if he will let me drive and allowing fishing from the piers?. Peace be with you all

:rotfl: I know what you mean! I may go crazy !!! I am trying to write some articles & do some genealogy in between wonderfully exciting TV. Concentration has been better since no daytime RX - only Tylenol. Hang in there!

randy62 Yes, TV is horrible. I now just watch the news in the morning and turn it off. I thought I had overcome the surgery sleeplessness issue because I had three good nights in a row, then last night I just couldn't fall asleep. Hopefully it's going to get better. I need to get rid of this brace (tomorrow) so I can stop sleeping on my back and get back to my own bed and out of this recliner. I sure hope that helps my sleep issue. Our dog has been good through all this. Except she has a habit of rolling on her back and wanting her belly rubbed. I explain to her that I cannot bend over to do that but she still keeps begging.

Okay, now i am paying the price of being born in early May. Went to get my blood tests done last night at the hospital lab( Coumadin.) well went to the valet parking and got out of the car, with help of course. Started walking with my walker when Sue comes over and says hey why don't you sit in a wheelchair and i will push you there. Me being bullheaded and all said nah lets just hoof it (big big mistake) turned the corner got in the elevator got out and then proceeded to walk about 20,000 miles in this hospital getting to the lab. Paying the price now as my leg is tighter then a, umm never mind, drum (yeah that is what I was going to say.) Knee is swollen slightly and i set myself back a day or two.. But the kisses from Sue we're worth it. Lol

The old one step, two step Randy, time to rest, elevate, ice and take those prescribed meds :)

Just saw the submitted claim from the doctor for the pro fees. Holy cow did i ever go in the wrong line of business.

Hey Randy, if you have Netflix it is wayyyy better than watching regular television.
Also, if you go on the net to annenberg learner foundation there are lots of free courses on video. They are put together for teachers in all disciplines. The website is www.learner.org. If you go to the list of courses you can see the stuff arranged by discipline. Some of the science stuff, particularly the geology courses are simply amazing. They are all available as VoD courses and are free.
you can also access free courses from MIT and other top universities on the web. The other great resource are Ted Talks. They are at ted.com.
All of this is certainly more interesting than the mindless drivel of daytime soaps and smut! Good luck!
