Hip Infection* problem

I am 4 weeks post op tomorrow for my right hip replacement 5th time. I am feeling ok, very tired but managing with help to do and enjoy doing things. My physio at the hospital is very keen for me to keep practicing standing on one leg as much as possible, but I have not been able to get my back pain on r side to settle, I have some years ago had a spinal fusion on that side with no metal. I am taking paracetamol and tramadol qds for pain, no pain when sitting. I so want to get onto 1 crutch but it is just too painful yet. Ideas please how do you think I should tackle this, It has not been straightforward and maybe im not meant to walk on 1 crutch.xx

So sorry that your struggling with back pain. Have you tried ice on it? I’ve found that helps more than heat does.
I would stay on the 2 crutches until your pain level reduce. Practice the heel, toe walking so your gait returns to normal.
Has you PT asked you to do the one leg standing to strengthen you core? If they had maybe they could suggest other exercises that don’t put any strain on you back or hip. I’m thinking of the one where you hold your stomach in whilst continuing to breathe normally. You can do this sitting, standing or lying. It strengthen core and improves balance and stability

Hi @clodaghcov. Sorry that back pain is still an issue. I think Jaycey, among others, also had back issues. It does not seem surprising this would come into play.

The transition to different assistive devices really seems to be individual. It could well be your body isn’t ready for one crutch yet, but in a few days that could change.

Standing on one leg without pain was hard for me with first hip. It seemed like it took forever to be able to do it for the length of time they wanted.

You have certainly have had a large number of revisions. From the dates, it looks like each one lasts longer than the previous. While we like to think we should be at a certain point at one month, it really isn’t that far out from surgery.

You say you have no pain when sitting. Is it constant upon walking? What sort of exercises do they have you doing? Does pain seem to increase with any of them? It is possible you are overdoing it between your hip and your back. Are you still icing?

Hope you have some relief today.

Sounds like this PT has no spinal experience. Building core stability is great but those of us with spinal problems need to do this correctly. As for an experienced spinal person to help you.

I agree with others - don't go to one crutch until this pain is controlled. There is really no rush.

Hi there @clodaghcov
My heart goes out to you...you've been through so much, I can't begin to imagine.
It sounds as though you feel your back pain is holding you back. One month post op is extremely early into
recovery. Speaking to your PT in regard to core strengthening as suggested by Jackie and Jaycey is
wise advice. Please try not to stress about getting onto one crutch. All will fall into place when the time is right.
Warmest wishes for a great weekend as you continue to heal :console2:

Thank you for all your advice and help, I am being a little kinder to myself and letting my body decide what is the right time to do things!! I am using both crutches and am much better I just want to run before I can walk!! I am taking my pain killers on time and not cutting corners. I think because I have had a lot of surgery I expect a lot of myself, sometimes the more proceedures you have the more difficult it becomes, but spring is on the way, the days are getting longer and the nights lighter, soon be time to get in the garden. Thank you againxxx

Hi @clodaghcov
You're welcome! That's why we're here, to offer support and encouragement. So please don't be a stranger.
I'm happy to hear you're taking it slow. Continuing with your meds on schedule is wise.
I'm with you in longing for Spring. I'm loving that the days are getting longer and hopefully
the temps will begin to rise also. We're at 10 F here today Brrr!
Hope it's warmer where you are :SUNsmile: A great week to you!

You sound so much better @clodaghcov. I think you are correct that our bodies will guide us. Pt just had me using cane. I can use it, but I know I’m not ready for only it, so I’m going to ease into. I also got procedure for getting refill on pain meds- I think I need more than the one week script I came home with (all they can prescribe where I live). My leg told me that.

Be kind to yourself. The main thing is we recover, there is no magic deadline. Have a good rest.

Thank you both, I had a long talk with my home dr yesterday, and he says it is often 9-10 weeks when his patients smile and say we are glad we have had replacement, before that they often struggle. He is lovely and gives lots of support, he said it was so nice to see me smiling with hope in my eyes! Gosh I do so hope soxx

Hope your week is restful.
Such a lot of surgeries, you are right, it will be a different recovery for you.
We want but to be your last, give it lots of time to do right.
Healing Hugs:friends:

That's all so positive sounding.....love it!
Happy and smiling at only 3 weeks post op.
Our girl, @clodaghcov isn't waiting any 10 weeks to put a smile on her face....You go girl! :egypdance:
:prayer: Prayers it only continues to get better...

I am feeling a bit worried today. My hip is sore, hopefully with just doing extra cooking, but, my CRP from Monday has come back as 51 from 7, and my ESR 31 from 9. The bone infection nurses are coming to do it again on Tuesday before my clinic visit on Thursday. Just cannot help feeling slightly uneasy.

Our son had a bad cycling accident whilst I was in hospital, he was taken to a&e xray and ultrasound and told everything fine. A young junior at his practice told him he could work out and get going. He saw the senior partner who said she was not happy and thinks looking at the xray there are pelvic fractures, so MRI Wed and minimum of 3 pelvic fractures. So off to see a consultant to hopefully guide him onward to recovery, sad that 5 weeks has been wasted.xx

Gosh @clodaghcov , you are dealing with so much. Just take one day at a time. Sounds like both you and your son are now on the recovery road. Take care of yourself and please keep us updated!

Don't we wish these things life throw at us would just take turns.
As I've gotten older, I still feel I'm good dealing with adversity, but ONE at a TIME please!
Hope all is well with your son...thinking of you:console2:

Aww, I'm so sorry to read the news in your latest post.
Prayers for both you and your son.
Please keep us posted on your appts this week and also your sons progress.
Hope you have a peaceful Sunday!
@clodaghcov

My CRP has gone to 105, which is not good news. However I have got a urine infection and am on antibiotics. Hopefully that is the reason but it's worrying. Could a high white cell count in urine affect my hip?

Thank you for your kindness xx

I'm really sorry @clodaghcov
Let's tag @Josephine on that because I have no idea....
Hope your night is peaceful. Hugs to you :console2:

Thank you Josephine, such a relief, hopefully a few days on anti b will get me feeling better!

Healing hugs....hope all is better soon:roseshwr:
