Hip Infection* problem

@clodaghcov So sorry you are still struggling with this hip. Fingers crossed for you that you are headed in the right direction now. Please keep us updated.

Really glad that you’ve had the new hip done @clodaghcov . It is sounding optimistic even though you’ve got a lot of pain. Hopefully you’ll soon be home.

Hi @clodaghcov
I'm so very sorry you're still struggling. Hopefully this turns around soon and
you're released for home to begin recovery. Prayers for your comfort and
peace of mind as you begin to heal. Hugs to you :console2:

Hi @clodaghcov
I read of the discomfort you're suffering on another's thread.
My heart goes out to you in all of this. So much pain and suffering, it just doesn't seem fair.
Going into surgery not knowing what would be in place when in recovery breaks my heart.
I can't even imagine and it makes me feel a bit ashamed of how frightened I was going into a routine THR.

I pray this surgery is a success so you can finally get your life back on track and begin living again.
I'd like to see Josephine weigh in on you're pain, while I'm sure it is normal given the circumstances, it's always
Interesting to get her expert opinion. I encourage you to post your progress in your thread. I, as well as others, will continue to follow your journey.

Sending love, a warm healing hug and best wishes for a peaceful weekend!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had back ache after having hip in, it has inly been 2 weeks but, I cant remember having this before with my revisions. The only thing I wonder is, my spacer dislocated and I had a huge thigh and lump round by my bum and back apparently this was some of the spacer. It is only painful to walk, not when sitting---any ideas pleasexxx

Hi @clodaghcov
I'm sorry you're still struggling with all you've been through. Given your history
one would think your current pain may be expected but I'm not a medical professional.

Let's have our resident expert, Nurse Director @Josephine weigh in on your current pain.
I've tagged her for you. As you probably know she's in the UK, so please check back in
case she has questions or wants to post a chart for you to pinpoint your area of pain.

In the interim, prayers you find some relief!

Oopsey daisy....one more thing
Will you please provide surgery dates to be added to your signature
Thanks!

@clodaghcov

Hi @clodaghcov
Thanks for the date of your latest surgery, its much appreciated.
Do you per chance remember the exact dates of your other surgeries.
It would be nice to add them all as your signature.
Please denote what each surgery was for, beginning with your first.
Thank you. Hope your day is peaceful!

Well it's hardly surprising that you have back ache if you dislocated the spacer. Can you tell me more about this? How was it dealt with? Did you have more surgery?

I'd also like to know your full surgery history as without it, I'm unable to really give an opinion.

Additionally, it would help to know which hospital(s) and surgeon(s) you are being treated by.

I went into hospital in August after having my THR for 4 brilliant years. This was with a new surgeon to me who specialized in infection. He replaced this hip after finding infection from the replacement before after 17 years.

I actually went about having my other knee done. I was working for a GP and had moaned about thigh pain for some time but after relevant tests and aspiration I was very very ill at that time. I spent nearly 6 months on and off in hospital, having IV at home and in hospital with staph.

Eventually I recovered and those 4 years I told you about previously were just magic, I swam aquarobed and gardened and felt so well and fit, we holidayed and I never thought about my hip again. However, suddenly in the August I felt pain and not being worried took myself off for physio and massage.

However I suddenly felt really ill and my Dr did bloods, I was contacted at night to say I needed admission with CRP of 400. I was admitted and it took 7 weeks to sort things out. Eventually they removed my hip after finding huge amounts of pus. There was no way they could put another hip in so I had a spacer which I found really comfortable compared with one I had previously.

I was on very large doses of antibiotics and anti-fungals and I felt confident and looked forward to Feb and a new hip. Nurses came each week to do blood tests and I felt really happy. But one morning in January 2018 I had awful pain and looked in long mirror and saw my thigh was the size of an elephant. After xrays and seeing specialist we knew it was dislocated. I tried to manage at home but eventually became too painful and was admitted to hospital. After three days they did an aspiration and after another week, went to theatre for either replacement of spacer or new hip dependant on results and what was seen. Hence I have my new hip a mutalis femur proximal I think.

I am sure all this is hard to read there are so many issues

Later 1970 I was under Solihull hospital and had pelvis fusion, pelvic osteotomy and finally a hip and further on, another revision. I had fallen off my horse and my hip kept dislocating, I just kept pressing it on the wall to get it back in, until eventually it would go no more, I was diagnosed with shallow sockets.

In the 1980s I asked to be transferred to another hospital, I will of course tell you where and who but would prefer to do this privately, because I have such faith in my present guy.

Up to 4 years ago I did very well and led a normal life as possible, working for a Dr, having 3 sons, many dogs, a husband and family. Then the infections started.

I hope you manage to read this my apologies if not

Many thanks Clodaghcov

How far back would you like dates to go?

Mutalis etc is the make and design of my prosthesis, I will try and get accurate spelling

Thanks because it didn't show up when I Googled it!

I think you could go back as far as 1970!!

Hi having received bone infection team letter, I can tell you I had a Mutars right proximal femoral EPR and total hip replacement on 13/1/18, ! Sorry I even got dates wrong!

Would you like me to privately send you hospitals and consultants, if not I wil just try and add history later, I have a fish pie to make!

MUTARS® Proximal Femoral Replacement and Proximal Femoral Replacement RS
"The extension pieces (40mm, 60mm, 80mm, 100mm) are used between the proximal femoral component and the stem, the reconstruction length can be increased up to 340mm in 20mm steps."

Here's what it looks like - 2 versions but I'm guessing the one you'll be having is the one on the left with the extension piece

Thanks for the dates - very helpful. And you can post your list of surgeons and hospitals on here if you don't mind.

You are exactly right, mine is on the left! Thank you

From the 1980s I was cared and looked after by the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham. My first surgeon who got me out of a wheelchair was Mr Roy Pearson, on his retirement I chose the McMinn/Treacy team, then Rohan Treacy, and finally the last 5 years and I hope for always Prof Lee Jeyes. I have nothing but praise and admiration for the hospital and these surgeons, better not to delve into the 70s!

If you were treated by Derek McMinn, you had the best! I know him well.
