TKR Post Op all is well<

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the great advice.
This week has been our Passover Holliday, and haven't done any real formal PT.
I have been busy with grand children, and that was a strain.
Thankfully, aside for some discomfort, my knee has held up.
I've gone up and down stairs endlessly and have done some stationary bike work.
I realize that even without the formal PT, I am quite active.
This activity has made me realize thay imI not ready to umpire baseball games yet.
But my knee is sound and I have give it some rest and let it heel.
Hope you all have enjoyed your holiday.
I rallre appreciate the support and encouragement.
Thank you all so much.

Shoot, you did have PT, just not formal PT! How great you knee is doing!

Thanks for the essential oil recommendations! I’ve been diffusing some - mostly just ones for health and calm. I’m going to take your wife’s recommendations!

Good idea about using the oils. Make sure you use high quality oils. If you need help finding them, let me know.
I'm now beginning week 16. My PT has cut me loose. Said that there is nothing more she can do for me.
I have full ROM and pretty much full functionality. According to the PT, i'm 3-6 months ahead of schedule.
I'm going to continue doing my PT, within the the limits that my knee permits.
Last week was hard. During the Passover holiday week, my younger son's two oldest boys, ages 5 & 3 spent a few days with us.
To say the least, it was challenging. Lot's of activity and as a result, some inflamation in my knee. Therefore, this past week, I shut down all non-essential activity and rested as much as possible.
My week feels better now, and I'll get back into my work gradually.
This experience has taught me that: 1) I'm still healing, 2) You can't skip steps and rush recovery, 3) always listen to your knee.
I am not even close to being an expert. All I know is my own experience and that the experience of every person who has a TKR is different.
But to the extent that I am recovering on a successful trajectory, I am willing to help as much as I am able.
Have a great pain free week.

You are definitely helping others by posting your recovery story! You're having an excellent recovery and share how you are doing it: by listening to your knee and being an active person within your new knee's limitations. Thank you for sharing with us!

Thanks for all your great comments. Can't express how helpful you have been.
Yesterday, I started thinking about this whole process. I remember every minute from the surgery until this point.
I remember how I felt the first time I got out of bed after the surgery.
How I felt when I took my first walk around the hospital floor.
How I felt getting in the car going home from the hospital.
Those first days at home before the staples were removed.
How hard the PT was, and I admit that my guide was a book written by a surgeon and his PT, which is very aggressive.
There were times, I hated doing it, but I can't disagree with where I am, so who knows.
I am light years from where I was just 4-5 weeks ago.
In any case, if I can be of any help to anyone, it would be my pleasure.

Dear friends,
On Friday, I celebrated my four month anniversary of my TKR.
I can absolutely say that there were days that I questioned my decision to have the surgery.
There was discomfort, pain lack of sleep, daily blood thinner injections, endless medication and difficult physical therapy.
I remember the pain I felt the first time I got out of bed after the surgery, and even more the pain I felt when I got back into bed.
I remember how difficult it was to get into the car when I went home from the hospital.
All the early days before the staples were removed, and the wonderful experience of having the staples removed.
In short, I remember every day and every minute of those days, and it is incredible to me how far I have come, even in the last month.
I can do deep knee bends, ride kilometers on the stationary bike, go up and down stairs, all without pain.
I even ran a little with my grandson. Unbelievable.
The recovery from TKR is incredibly difficult. Doing physical therapy is really challenging when you know you are going to cause yourself pain.
In the interest of transparancy, I have worked very hard on my rehab, and some have told me that I was doing too much, including my physical therapist, as well the wonderful people on this forum.
But, I am so grateful to all the support and help that I have received to this point.
On Friday, I even umpired a shortened baseball game, albeit from behind the mound.
I continue to work on my knee, although on my own, as my physical therapist has released me as she can no longer help me further.
Have a wonderful week.

I'm really glad your knee is doing so well.

We do say that there is no one right way to rehab a knee and your way has worked well for your knee.

What a fantastic recovery for you! Thank you for sharing what has worked in your rehab. You are one of the few that was able to do aggressive PT. Most find that, that will cause extreme swelling. You are blessed that it didn't you!

It's wonderful to read about a recovery as determined, thoughtful, and successful as yours! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. Other people will take heart about their own recoveries when they read about yours.

Hi friends,
I'm a little late with my weekly message.
I appear to be progressing. I am able to get on my knees.
Go up and down stairs with almost no pain.
There is one area, in the lower left part of the knee that is swollen and inflamed.
There were even a few minutes that I didn't feel my knee at all. I suppose that that is progress.
Still exercising and swimming, but not nearly as much as I did.
I usually give myself a day off after a day of PT to recover and gain muscle strength.
Wishing you all a pain free and productive week

I'm going into week 18.
I still have pain in a ligament on the side of my knee.
Also feel discomfort after doing too much bike work. I did 8 KM.
I never learn.
Will add more later

Also feel discomfort after doing too much bike work. I did 8 KM.
Another member of the ODIC (over did it club). Easy on that new knee - it's still learning!

You are so right.
I know better because I have been in the ODIC before and always vow never to do it again.
I felt a twinge but thought I could reach my target.
The moral of the story, ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR KNEE.
It will never lead you astray.

Hi friends,
I'm a little late with my weekly message.
I am in the middle of week 18.
So far, so good.
Still working on strengthening the leg.
The knee is fine. The only pain I have is from the tendons and ligaments around the knee.
Last week, I umpired my first game from behind the plate.
The only problem I had was in my good right knee.
I've been able to do things I haven't done in four years.
I've been a little lax in the PT, but I've been active in cycling and swimming. Hope that this is OK.
That's about it for now.
Have a great and pain free week.

You're doing so well.

It's great to hear about your successful recovery. :yes!: :happydance: :yay:

Friday was the 5 month anniversary of my surgery.

My status hasn't really changed too much.

My knee is still somewhat swollen.
It still feels tight when walking.
I am still swimming, riding a stationary bike.
Doing my pt, albeit not as rigorously as I once did.
The pain in my hamstring is largely gone.
I still have pain from the musc on the inside of my leg, along the knee.
I have comlete ROM.

That's about it.
Speak to you next week.

Hello everyone,
Please forgive me for being so lax in writing.
Friday was the six month anniversary of my TKR.
Thankfully, my knee has continued to improve.
Swelling has gone down significantly.
While I still have a feeling of stiffness, at times, this has also improved.
The pain on the inside part of my knee has gone, and the hamstring soreness has also diminished significantly.
I have full ROM and functionality.
What need to work on is to continue to strengthen my leg and the muscles around the knee.
I had scaled back my PT to almost nothing for the last few weeks, but will go back to the PT in the pool, which helps in strengthening my legs.
I'm continuing to ride the stationary bike for 20 minutes at a time, 2 or 3 times a week.
All in all, my recovery has progressed better than I expected.
Coincidentally, I just read on another thread of the difficulties other people experience. Their pain and difficulty truly saddens me and highlights all the more how fortunate I have been with my
experience.

Thank you all for the great advice and support.
