Revision TKR possibly allergic reaction to knee replacement

Hi everyone. I'm posting a picture of the one and only spot of my incision that is causing problems. My in home PT came to see me the first day I was home and the in home nurse thinks he may have broken my dissolvable stitch. Since then I have done everything they have told me to and now it looks like this which is really good compared to what it was. It isn't seeping, doesn't hurt, no fever, walking fine. This is the type of scab healed look it has. Tomorrow I go for my first out patient therapy and am going to ask them if I should go see my OS, if they think it is infected or what.

I think it would be a good idea to show your incision to your surgeon. He will either be able to reassure you, or take action if he thinks it necessary.

Hi borymms4, I just read your entire thread. Wow, I can't believe what you have had to go endure. I am so sorry, but very glad you found a wonderful OS to do your revision. I hope your recovery will be smooth and easy. You really had some pretty bad medical folks along the way. I imagine it was pretty hard to keep going in your search for answers, but you persisted, and now healing can begin. Hoping your open spot is nothing serious.

I knew I had a nickel allergy from years of severe irritation from earrings, unless they were surgical steel, or gold. Alas, the one pair of gold earrings I had were lost! Anyway, I told my OS and he ordered a titanium implant, without question. I had not heard of gold, but sounds like a perfect product for you.

Those rashes you had were pretty extreme, and your body was just screaming "allergy". Thank goodness someone listened! Sounds like all of that allergic irritation put your body into a high reaction state where everything started to irritate you. Now your tissues can calm down. Wishing you an uneventful recovery. I'll be following along.

Thank you everyone. I called and made an appt for Wed. I have a 6wk appt but not till July 8th. Anyway, I am so upset right now, last night was a nightmare. For some reason when it all started after my surgery I would get a shower and my legs would turn to jello and I couldn't control them at all and if it wouldn't have been for the shower chair would have fallen. That had happened twice.

Now last night. I wasn't getting a shower just laying on the sofa, got up to take my puppies out and my legs did the same. Jello legs but it's like I have no control over my muscles. Luckily my friend had been right there and held me up till hubby walked in and had to all but pick me up and put me in the chair. After about 20 min every symptom disappeared. Like nothing happened. Just frustrating. Don't know when it will happen. I can walk with a cane and have basically no pain. Bend is 105 and 0 at straightening.

Hello everyone. I wanted to give you all an update. The muscles issues I was having were Charlie horses. I never had them before but now as my muscles are getting stronger they have disappeared, thank goodness. That spot on my incision is completely healed and surgeon was very pleased with everything. My bend is now all but 120 and 0 at straightening. Still in PT and do home pool therapy. We have our own pool so the PT person gives me exercises to do in the pool. My legs are a lot stronger now but I did find out from PT guy that my one leg is longer then the other now so I'm not sure yet if I need a special shoe so I don't limp. I limp even with no pain cause of the one leg shorter and my hip is already "mad" for limping for so many years. I'm doing much better but it is definitely a slow recovery

borymms4,
Your PT will be able to help you with a lift inserted in your shoe, you do not need special shoes for most differences.
Your ROM is great, now to work on your walking.
I notice your surgery date for your revision is missing, please add it to your signature, hover over your username top right, click on signature, add your information there.

Thanks pumpkin. I will do that right now. Hopefully I can figure out how to do it lol. I will have to ask my PT about the insert because they know about it and never said anything about an insert? Thank you

When was your revision? A Moderator can add the date for you, just post it here.

Oh thank you. I just tried and couldn't figure it out. My revision surgery was May 23,2016

@borymms4 I just read your whole history and am fighting back the tears. Physical problems are bad but when there are incompetent doctors who are also rude it is beyond horrible in my mind. I am so sorry you have had to go through so much and so pleased that things are finally beginning to go right for you. My surgery was June 1 and I am allergic to nickel but have had no reactions so far. You can bet I am praying that none come. I know the future is bright for you and I am so glad that you found the good folks here at BS. Wishing you the best possible future with your new gold knee.

Hi @borymms4 I just read your thread and feel for all that you have been through. I too have severe allergies to nickel and adhesive tape but knew that before my June 21 TKR. So my OS ordered a Zimmer Persona titanium knee, which they had to make special order. In the hospital, they gave me a special gown with ties instead of snaps. They also closed the incision with glue instead of staples. (When you start asking questions about nickel, it is surprising all the places it is found.) So far my recovery has gone very well and it sounds like yours is going well now too. I pray that it continues and that your entire body heals. You deserve a good rest. Sleep well, my friend.

Floridagal, thank you so much. I'm so glad I found bonesmart, people are so supportive and helpful and I'm beyond excited that I'm getting better

TML, thank you. I'm also allergic to adhesives, and glues so I got dissolvable sutures, no glue. I'm so glad that you got a special order knee done for you, it is much better than a second surgery. Mine was specially ordered too and it is referred to as the gold knee.

I like the sound of a gold knee. I hope it's 24k gold! You deserve it after all you've been through.

so I got dissolvable sutures, no glue
Many people don't absorb so-called 'dissolvable' sutures as well as it would be expected and as a consequence, they also tend to get tissue reactions to the suture material. The little wound you had was just a natural reaction by your body, trying to eject the foreign material that was your stitch. That is not the same as an infection, as your surgeon correctly told you.
it is referred to as the gold knee
Here's your knee!

Hello everyone. It has been 3 mos. Now since my revision. It has been a slow recovery, but not one fall since. I m happy with my progress although I m a bit concerned that when I m walking I cannot fully straighten my leg. My knee stays bent. I keep trying exercises and so far no change. I have to concentrate to walk rite and when I don't I seem to start walking on my tippy toes. A little worried not sure what the os will say or if there is anything he can do. Thanks for listening

@borymms4, for me getting a straight leg has been the hardest thing to do. It will get better for you. It just takes time. When I bend from the waist with my leg straight, I can feel my hamstrings pulling so I know it working on my extension. You might try that. Also, with you leg on an ottoman letting gravity help with that.
