TKR Poetry Chef's Epic Recovery

In PT, a short walk into the hall and back. 15 each heel slides and quad sets. Finally sitting in the recliner. My measurements were 8 and 40. Waiting for lunch to arrive and then downstairs for an x-ray.

OT and PT still on the menu for the afternoon.

I came out of anesthesia talking about God and his goodness and how he is bringing me through this. I said I have been praying. :praying:
What a wonderful way to wake up! Reading that brought tears to my eyes! God bless you!

A friend said all of the praying on my behalf must have reached God's ears and he answered those prayers. So sweet. God is good.

I am now gearing up for surgery on the left knee. I am in quite a bit of pain after PT. That coupled with delayed meds has made my right knee a little angry. I just received my long acting and instant release narcotics about a half hour ago. The pain is beginning to subside. After midnight no food or liquids.

My surgeon says tomorrow will be the game changer and will become more challenging.

I have not had any issues with swelling as I have been forcing liquids, placed myself on a low sodium diet, staying away from gluetin, using my polar ice machine about 18 hours per day and elevating.

This is serious business. @SusieShoes at what point does this crazy initial pain subside? Did I read somewhere on this site that it is right at 3 weeks?

PT Must not hurt. If it does, say NO.
Remember this, from the post-op articles Josephine gave you:
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

Don't muck around with your diet right now. Any swelling you have (and you will inevitably have some) can lower your blood sodium levels. Reducing your sodium further could interfere with your heart's functioning.

Because of a drug I had to be given, I retained too much extra fluid, and my blood sodium levels went so low that they considered transferring me to the Intensive Care Unit.

You've had major surgery that is bound to cause pain. The pain will reduce gradually, as your knee heals, but there is no target time for that to happen - everyone is different.

To control the pain, make sure that your pain medications are given on a strict schedule - and don't let them make you do too much PT.

Thanks. Celle. I had not considered the possible sodium dilemma. I will make sure to get meds on time.

The PT had me walk in the hallway for a short distance, do a few heel slides, ankle pumps, and attempted short angle quads which didn't work at all. I can't lift the leg without a leg lifter.

Good for you! I too, know that God is getting me through my knee replacement ( almost 8 weeks postop) One day at a time, one step at a time!

My surgery time has changed from 7:30am to noon. Arrgh!

I realized my earlier reply was after reading your thread re what you were saying when you cane out of anesthesia. I’m sure that seemed an odd response after your continued post! It has been slow! Still using a cane, which is a little frustrating at 7 weeks. I’m going to PT twice a week now and she’s not concerned. She goes slow with the exercises. I have compared this replacement to my last, which I know is not a good thing. This one has been more of a challenge! My right knee revision was four years ago so my husband tells me that I just forgot what it was like. I now see your surgery is late morning tomorrow. You will have both knees on the road to recovery, that is awesome.
I will be praying for you tomorrow. Gods got this!

How long the initial pain of this surgery will last depends on way too many things to predict, most of all you, your body, and your definition of "initial pain."

Your pain will last a while. At some point you will realize it's better. :) Not painless, maybe still painful, but noticeably better!

I found it helpful to just take each day as it came. Looking ahead to something that may not happen yet is a sure path to disappointment.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow!

Thank you. I requested the instant release narcotic before bed as the leg is certainly at a painful state. Mostly aching in the thigh area just above the knee and in the calf. I am using the compression devices on both calves. I find the most pain when moving the leg off the bed to a bent position and I am certainly experiencing the log leg that others have spoken of.

I'll be so happy to have the catheter removed Saturday morning which means more getting from the bed or recliner to go to the restroom. I think I will possibly go home Sunday.

Hey sweet friend, you should be getting close to going in for your 2nd surgery now since they changed time. I am praying for you and a great outcome for lefty as well. :loveshwr:

It is said that those who receive prayer do well, even when they don't know they are being prayed for. God bless you!

Just dropping in to check in after your lefty surgery. Hope you're resting and doing well.

I am in the room now. Feet elevated, iced and meds as needed. I ran PT off telling them my surgeon said pt tomorrow. I will go home Sunday .

I will write more later. Many thanks for all your prayers and well wishes.

So happy [emoji16] you are out! Take care!

I have been able to doze off a bit. Seems to be a bit of a tug of war with my meds. I requested them every four hours as prescribed saying to please bring them on time which has not been the case in general.

I am waiting until 6 am when they will turn on my ice machine as it was turned off at 11. I will discuss this with the assistant to my OS when she arrives to check on me.
