TKR Patella Tendonitis after TKR - Have you had this?

Josephine...I understand that healing can take up to one year. The question asked was,"How long did it take you to be pain free?" In giving my personal story I mentioned that I was walking unassisted at 8 days and 12 days when I got off pain meds., there was no pain, just some stiffness and tightness. It didn't take very long for this to go away. It is important for those thinking about having a TKR to realize that there is a wide range of time it takes to be pain free. I was giving my story which was what the thread was about. Jenkneefur started a very important thread when she asked "how long did it take you to be pain free?" several members responded that they wanted to ask the same question and the thread was generating a lot of responses. Could we please leave threads such as these up for a little longer before they are merged. Sometimes merging hides the thread from those who might have responded.

Good point, Dmgkag. I don't know why these threads were merged. They have nothing to do with each other. Grrrrr.

Again, I find that another thread I started about desired degrees of flex was for some reason merged with my thread which I started about my surgical pain. These two threads have nothing to do with each other. If this is what happens on these boards, then I'm pretty likely to disappear.

Jen......Jo and I will discuss these latest merges. Normally we like to keep a person's comments, questions and concerns about their recovery in a single recovery thread. But I can see your point of view that you were posing rhetorical quesions and not necessarily indicating concerns with your situation. We'll let you know the outcome of our discussion here on your thread.

I agree, to much muddling in what is posted, I've spent alot of time slogging thru someones thread to find an answer to a question. Let the conversations flow normally, do we still need to ask permission to change the title of our thread or can we change it ourselves?

I hear you, Bev. Even when I use the search function it can be hard to find specific info in merged threads which get muddled and don't flow well because there are several entirely different conversations happening -- often having nothing to do with someone's individual recovery.

For those of you who are weaning off of narcotic meds for pain, what kinds of non-narcotic meds or treatments are you using to keep the remaining pain at bay? I've tried several anti-inflammatories, like Celebrex and Mobic, but don't find any pain relief with them.

Um, I've been out of the hospital for months. This is why i hate posting every question to one thread, but I het my hand smacked if I dont.

Well, me too, jenkneefur, and I still go back to my recovery thread if I want to address something that pertains to me. For those of us who try to address problems or concerns for members who are in recovery having all their recovery history in one thread to read through for full info is so much easier than having to search for multiple threads and keep things in chronological order. The better to serve you, my dear.

As you can see, when I posted a new question here, the only response I got was to my very first post in this thread (when I WAS in the hospital), which has nothing to do with the current issue. That's my frustration. Requiring every issue a patient encounters to be posted to the same thread makes for a muddled mess, and whatever help that one needs will simply get ignored because it has NOTHING to do with the title.

I left hospital on tramadol and paracetamol and took them both for quite a few months. I then added ibuprofen when I felt pain was more muscular. Eventually, And it took a long time, I gradually dropped tramadol. I still occasionally take paracetamol and ibuprofen at 7 months . Take care

Then change the title. You cannot judge the success or otherwise of this by the mistakes of a brand new member!

I've read your thread through and don't see any evidence of you having tried the tylenol/ibuprofen cocktail. Why not give that a try and see if it makes any difference? NSAIDs are actually quite mild pain killers and say on the label "for mild to moderate pain".

if the narcotic you take also has acetominophen you have to keep track of your totals, but taking 2 extra strength tylenols as a dose works pretty well for pain.

Jen, I understand what you are saying about people getting mixed up by the threads. It does get confusing if the poster doesn't have it straight forward for their title. Maybe if the date under our original post would be bolder might help for the newer people that come on here and see your post but don't see the date of the original post. Also our signatures should maybe be bolder. I know when I am looking at posts it sometimes takes me awhile to see that these things have happened months ago.

Now unto your question about weaning off the narcotic drugs. Too early in the game for me yet. Tried to cut back to one vicodine instead of two and paid the price. I will see the OS on Monday and I am sure we will discuss it then. But until I can get off the blood thinners (one them for three weeks) I can't do too much as I can't take ibuprofen. I think I will be doing some Tramadol and Tylenol and find out about throwing in some Ibuprofen when I can.

I'm wondering if any of the Bonesmarties have developed patella tendonitis after their TKRs. If so, what worked for you and what didn't? Did the pain resolve itself or are you still dealing with it?

I've had it in both knees since my TKRs in February and May. I'm still in PT 3x/week and nothing is working. Getting quite frustrated. :(

I don't know for a fact, but I think if you have tendonitis, the thing to do would be to take a PT-vacation. Tendonitis is inflammation which needs the RICE approach: "rest, ice, compression, elevation." Are you taking NSAIDs? I think your tendons are trying to tell you "stop!"

PT is not a cure-all. Physical therapy is structured strengthening and stretching. But it needs to be balanced with rest. You said nothing's working. Actually "nothing" itself (rest) probably would work!!

I would agree with the post above! Tendonitis is an overuse situation---and the more you overuse it, the more inflamed it becomes---anti-inflammatories, ice, and rest are in order. What have your PT folks said about this?

I have patella tendonitis. It is an overuse issue for me. My recovery was going great until I went back to the gym at 7 weeks. I jumped right into an hour long leg workout - did that on Tuesday and Thursday- by Sat I could hardly bear any weight on my knee. I have gone backwards- every time I try and start exercising my leg- the pain picks back up - very localized. I did this to myself after my lateral release 2 years ago- jumped back into activities too hard. My dr had me brace it and put me on steroid pack. Another member Kathy has had this as well- same pattern- active person trying to jump back into her active life!! It stinks- as right now I think I am 11 weeks- I was doing more at week 7 before I hurt myself. I am just icing a lot, taking Alleve and trying to rest it.

Overuse is definitely not the cause of my tendonitis...I've been assured of that. But no other causation is confirmed by the OS. I'm on Mobic for inflammation, use kinesio tape for support and have been "RICE"ing for months now. My PT and OS are in the "wait and see" mode. However, I don't have the patience for months more of this.
