TKR Patella Tendonitis after TKR - Have you had this?

Hope you are feeling better by now. Keep at them, squeaky wheel and all!! I don't understand why they won't let you shower with staples. My doctor said no problem, just don't scub it. Let the soapy water run down it, rinse with clear and pat dry gently with a clean towel. I never had any problems whatsoever and my incision has closed up nicely and is looking good. I felt just like you--I got home and went straight to the shower. It was heaven!

Hi Jenkneefur, welcome to the other side. I was about to suggest ice but Dawni beat me to it. I know what you mean about de-funked. I didn't have staples, I had dissolving sutures and a big platic sticky cover. No way was water getting in there. 48 hours after surgery all the wires, drips and drains were gone and the first thing I did was get on those crutches, into my bathroom and stuck my head in the sink and washed my hair. The next day I was allowed a shower.

Okay,
I know there is no way I could post from a cell phone after knee surgery. Maybe it's a generational thing but I believe you aren't sedated enough if you can post for your cell.
Do stay on top of the pain, it will make a world of difference.
Welcome to this side.

Welcome to the other side. I hope your pain gets sorted and you feel more comfortable soon. My OS was very fussy about not getting a shower before the staples were out but I had bought a thing called a Limbo that did the job - a bit like a plastic bag but totally waterproof. Take care.

I agree with Daverunner.
You aren't wasted enough. Ask for more drugs!!!
Have a restful night.

Hospital physio I saw first told me I was in too much pain and had I told the nurse. Through my tears I told her that everytime I said my knee hurt they gave me ice. She said stop saying my knee hurts and say 'i need a painkiller' . Did it all next day and helped. And I loved the cryocuff with the ice. It helped a lot. I still use the cuff now I'm home but have to freeze it in freezer as didn't. Getto take the ice bucket home. Hope you're feeling bit better. Had me on walker same day and sticks next day

Don't worry about not posting---those ducks and getting them all lined up was the important stuff. I hope that you get the pain managed quickly and are able to relax and move forward pain-free into the successful recovery!

I hope you feel better---your last post was much more upbeat! Please keep us updated when you are able.

Just sending you good wishes. I hope between the meds & ice your pain is more under control. :console:

Jen, I agree with the others, if you can post using your blackberry, you definitely need more painkillers!! Love your sense of humor, and seeing it through the pains tells me we have some interesting recovery posts to follow. Good luck and look forward to hearing more frm you!

Take care, Dawn

Hi, I wasn't a member of Bonesmart at time of my surgery but I certainly was clearing emails through my phone on the afternoon of my surgery. My leg was numb from the femoral nerve block and I was bored. No pain to speak of, and I had had epidural so not groggy from general.

Just wanted to stop in and tell you I'm thinking of you and hope they have your pain under control now and you are getting the rest you and your new knee need.

Your sense of humor will help you get through this too - but don't use that as a cover for your pain and not telling people about it. I do it lots and will have to remember that when I'm on this side.

Welcome to recovery, Jenkneefur!!! I have to agree that you must keep being the squeaky wheel until your pain is properly managed. Think of it not as complaining, but being an advocate for yourself. Tell the nurses as many times as necessary that you have pain and need better medication for it.

JENKNEEFUR, I know exactly how you feel. My first TKR was a RTKR and the pain management was horrible. I screamed and screamed for hours at times and the nurses would just tell me, "you know this is not a pain free procedure" . I will share what helped me the 2nd time around, LTKR, Dec 29, 2011. I had toradol IM, and got regularly scheduled percocet instead of PRN(as needed). I also go valium for muscle spasms, they were horrible both times. Toradol is underused and a wonderful drug that potentates the effects that the percocet or dilaudid have on you. Hope this helps and hope your pain is controlled soon.

What ever you do try to keep pain under control. I do know it can be hard to find the right combination but hang in there. Ice, Rest, Pain Control, Postive thinking if you can. Please let us know how you are doing.:doggieshmooze:tashia:grouphug2:

Hello fellow BoneSmarties! It's so great to read through all of your notes of encouragement! THANK YOU!

I'm so sorry I wasn't able to post for awhile. It's been a really rough two weeks since surgery. I went home on Saturday the 25th, and then the visiting nurse sent me to the ER on the 27th. She was alarmed by the massive swelling and redness in my leg. Luckily, the doppler test showed no clots. Whew!

But... the pain. It's been horrific. The qualities and patterns of the pain have me convinced that it's nerve pain. Perhaps the sciatic nerve was irritated with the nerve block during surgery.

I'm on oxycontin and percocet for pain, flexeril to treat the intense muscle spasms in my leg, and mobic for inflammation. And, of course, a bunch of other stuff...coumadin, compazine, etc. But the meds don't touch the nerve pain at all. Well, to some extent the flexeril does -- it keeps some of the muscle spasms at bay. I had to ask for the flexeril. They didn't give it to me upon discharge. It's the hot, electric shocking, crushing pain from my thigh down to my ankle that is killing me.

PT has been very hard to get through with so much of the muscle cramping/spasms. I'm only at 75 degrees of flex right now.

Thursday my staples will come out and then I can *finally* see the surgeon. The follow up and aftercare from the surgeon's office has been non-existent so far. He's some kind of a rock star in orthopedics, so visits with him are quick and very limited. The office staff are, unfortunately, kind of rude and unhelpful. Soooo....my nerve(?) pain has gone unaddressed and my pleas (and those of my PT) to be allowed a CPM machine at home to keep the stiffness away have gone ignored. I feel like I've lost two weeks of critical recovery time because my surgeon is such a God that he can't be bothered with me. Grrr.

That's all for now. Time for a nap.

Sure sorry to hear of your ordeal, I hope you give the "rock star" and his staff a performance review when you see them. I just don't understand that lack of compassion for someone who is suffering. My thoughts and best wishes are with you. Please let us know how the appointment goes.

Sorry to hear you've been having such trouble. I hope things will turn around once you get see the doc/god.

Jen....so sorry to hear of your problems and I do hope they resolve soon. Time helps these things, so hang in there. When you see the surgeon, take a list of points you want to cover. And do let him know where he or his staff could do better. Even the rock stars usually appreciate feedback when it's provided on a positive note. And don't leave his office until you get all your questions answered!!!

Jen,I am so sorry you are dealing with the "rock star" OS. Your pain sounds awful as well. I hope something gets sorted out for you soon!!
