@Mollymax I am of the mind that your health and well-being is a great deal more important than that of your boss/work. You are so close to retirement that they really can't do much to you, unless they have the power to somehow take some of your retirement income away. Maybe you need to think about retiring in a couple of months instead of January so you can get your knee done and not have to stress about work. That way you can focus on you, not some bossy boss. Granted, I don't know your retirement plan, etc, but I don't see a few months making a huge difference in the long term, other than to lower your stress levels. I know my husband has tons of sick/vacation time built up so he can take whatever time he needs for vacation or to help me when I need it, and still receive his regular pay. If he were to somehow manage to burn through all that (although it'd take somewhere around six months off to do so), and need more, he could just choose to retire then and there, or a lot of times other employees will give a few hours of their leave time to someone in need. He's done that for others many times over the last 30+ years, so I'm sure many would do it for him. I don't know if your work does that, but I still say you need to think about you now.
I'm glad you're doing better and getting some sleep. This roller coaster is often a pain, but the ups sure are nice.
