3 Month Report
3 months ago now, I was being prepped for surgery - the time has flown!
Before surgery:
I couldn't stand for any length of time, maybe 10 minutes, I couldn't walk very far and hubby dropped me off close to our destination and then parked the car. I couldn't do so many things that made life interesting, like walking through a garden, on a beach, in a gallery or museum without my first thought being - where can I sit? I was able to go to my Aquafit class almost up until surgery which gave me the exercise I needed but in the buoyancy of shoulder deep water.
Now - at 3 months after BTKR:
Pain is pretty well history - I take Tylenol once, maybe twice a day.
ROM is 127 in both knees and extension in my left is 0°and in my right is about 3°
I sleep through the night, sleeping on my sides and only wake up from RLS which is not surgery related.
I've spent 3 hours walking around a mall with our granddaughter while she shopped - forgetting my cane in one store and then stood for 2 hours at her soccer game the next day.
My stamina is slowly coming back and so is my brain ;-)
I do a series of exercises in a leisure pool, up to 3 times a week and "try" to do other exercises at home, on the floor - the other days.
I go to out-patient PT at the rehab hospital I was in.
I'm still working on going up and down the stairs one step at a time.
The strength in my legs still needs a fair amount of work, it's particularly important so I can climb up into our van. I have done it and can drive again.
I find myself still using my hands to push up from a sitting position, so another reason to get my strength back in my legs.
There is still work to be done on areas of flexibility, for instance - it still a bit of a challenge putting a sock on my right foot.
I still have a nerve issue on my top left thigh and still only wear yoga pants - jeans and other stiffer fabrics annoy the nerve.
I've had regular acupuncture from my naturopath prior to and following surgery, and I personally feel it has helped me. It's not for everyone.
On the whole, I'm very pleased with the progress I've made in 3 months. I'm very thankful for having spent 4 weeks in our wonderfully supportive rehab hospital and for the support from the whole BoneSmart team, someone was always there - even in the middle of the night! A number of special BoneSmarties have helped me along the way - particularly
@ljrfrm who has walked this path before me, and has always been there to guide me.
I'll be back with a six month report - I'm looking forward to seeing how I've improved from this point, just prior to heading to the beach and my dream of being able to walk it as long and as far as I want.
