Newbie Here...7 Days & Counting :)

I just googled the question and read several articles that stated the Percocet is fine to take. I didn't have too many problems with constipation because I took 400 Mg's of magnesium once a day when I returned home and it worked like a charm (I started with Colace for a few days and then switched to the magnesium.
I'll be thinking of you next week and looking forward to your first recovery post. These final days before surgery are the worse part of this journey. :-)

@Josephine Here's my biggest question. How do I control the pushy PT types????
Be assertive and don't take no for an answer. Be confident that you have the right to declare what you will and will not do. It's all a question of consent. If you say no, effectively you've withdrawn your consent and if they ignore that, that's assault and you would have every right to complain about them. More than that, it's against the law! Remember that and stand your ground. You are not obliged to be compliant but they are!
Last night I stopped taking everything as directed and what a hellish night it was!!
There really isn't a lot you can do about this. I am always puzzled why your surgeons do this as we don't do it in the UK. In fact, in the pre-op instructions, we are actually told to take our routine meds and pain meds but to make sure we only use a small mouthful of water to do so. We are also advised to bring some into pre-op with us so if we have to take several hours, we can take a dose when necessary.

@Zelda @Jillie422 @Cynthia777 a request please: You all tagged me in three consecutive posts! Couldn't you all see I'd been tagged before? It doesn't make me come any faster! And please, do not do not make my name a tag when mentioned in the course of general conversation. I would appreciate this so much! :)

On average I get between 10 and 15 tags a day so you can imagine that getting to a post and finding I'm not actually needed but that my name has just been mentioned in passing and made into a tag is very irritating and time wasting.

Of course you are all very welcome to tag me if you have a specific question or concern. Those I have no concern about whatsoever. Thanks for understanding.
Or maybe @Josephine can make a suggestion?
about the codeine part? @Zelda @Josephine
I'll be very interested in hearing what @Josephine or has to say.

And my apologies as well..

Tomorrow I will call my OS and see if they will give mve a script for Percocet. Fingers crossed. Thank you all for your input regarding the preop meds and aggressive PT types :) It's much appreciated

@Jillie422 good luck with your upcoming surgery. I am also a newbie to Bonesmart and will behaving a RTH on May 16. I, too, have been reading all the stories in an effort to gain much needed information and to calm my fears. I can relate to your walking (or inability to). I've been using a cane for almost a year and can't take a step without it. I am so thankful I have a husband who has really stepped up and helps me in any way he can. Please keep us informed of your operative experience - I'll be looking for it! Best wishes!!!

@Cynthia777 good luck to you with your upcoming second hip surgery. I'll definitely be looking for your report as well. I've read much of your pre and post op reports. You have definitely helped me deal with my nerves as I await my May 16 surgery. Best wishes!!!

@Wildwood14
I'm so happy my threads have helped! The surgery and recovery is not near as bad as our minds tell us it is while in the pre-op phase (at least mine wasn't). Just make sure you stay ahead of the pain with your meds (be very outspoken in the hospital and watch the clock) and ice from the moment you get into your hospital bed. Once you wake up at home the day of surgery, everything moves fast and is over before you know it. My mind kind of went into a kind of blank auto mode and all my anxiety had disappeared (maybe this is the acceptance phase?).
Thanks for your well wishes and I'll be watching and rooting both you and @Jillie422 on during your journies. :)

I went ahead and took a Percocet...ahhhh, feeling better. Nap time :heehee:. Wish I could beam one to you @Jillie422...that is if it were legal ;-)

Oh boy @Cynthia777 ! I wish you could too! Thanks for that caring thought! The good news is that I will call first thing in the morning.... Just tonight to get through. I hafta say though... Today was one of worst days I've had and I don't want the next few to be the same!

But here you are Girl... Just a day away! I'll be watching your journey and sending you prayers of quick healing and comfort!

On the bright side, since you are experiencing such awful pain, the pain of recovery will seem like a breeze! The op pain is very manageable with the pain meds. Psychologically I think post-op pain is much easier to handle because you know there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. You have no idea how much your prayers mean to me! Thank you so much and know I will also be in prayer for you. :loveshwr:

Good luck to you Jillie422, three years is a long time to endure pain and you must be excited to get it done. As I understand it, the hospital makes you do OT so you can move about your home but you can decline home PT. The BS protocol has worked well for many so for me, I'll follow Cynthia777's example, she had a great recovery. It makes sense to let your bone settle down and heal. Seems PT has it place later on for help with your gait.

Oh my gosh @Jillie422 ! You have had such a long wait. Hugs to you and congrats for finally getting the THR.. I am now 7 months post op and I STILL grin like a loon when walking or shopping. It just feels so much better and saying that I am grateful just doesn't cover it.. Soon you will be enjoying the difference also. Good luck on Friday, I will try to pop in and see how you are doing.

Good luck @Jillie422 .

I had conflicting information from my PA and the Anesthesiology Tech on the meds. The PA said I could take my meds (meloxicam and a Hydrocodone+Acetaminophin) but to try to ween down. The Anesthsology tech said to stop taking them on Friday after my intake visit with them. I elected to go with the more restrictive approach since that was what I was expecting. Today was the worst of the 4 days. Glad to be tucked in to my recliner and trying to wind down and get some zzzzz's with surgery tomorrow.

Well Kids....had the last pre op with my OS today. Good news!.....got a nice script for Percocet that I popped on the way home. Getting into the office was a painful chore, even with cane and hubby support! Hopefully :sleep:for me tonight!!

The downer of the day was this: I've been taking Bactrim for a slight uti (that I was having no symptoms of) and I have to go to the lab on Thursday morning for a follow-up urine test. I'm gonna need everyone's prayers that it's all gone....otherwise a 10 day surgery hold while I take another round of antibiotics. I am guzzling cranberry juice as I take my last 4 Bactrim!

@Josephine I am posting the xray of my left hip for your reading pleasure :) The socket seems to be completely gone, which is why my OS won't do the Anterior approach. I wonder how they attach the cup with no socket! I forgot to ask today. I do know that he doesn't use cement.

@gullimac I can so feel your pain! Glad you've found a comfy spot to rest until Your Big Day. I did get a script for Percocet today. Yippeeee! Maybe sleep for me tonight! I do know one thing....with pain this bad, the surgical pain has got to be a relief. Looking forward to hearing how you're feeling. Best wishes and lotsa prayers for your surgeon's steady hands and your speedy recovery :egypdance:

The socket seems to be completely gone, which is why my OS won't do the Anterior approach. I wonder how they attach the cup with no socket!
Well, it's not so much the socket that's gone as the femoral head! They both have become very deformed.

As for fitting the cup, here's how it's done. Be prepared, it's pretty much like carpentry!

Once they've removed the head of the femur, they will fashion a new cup using a dome shaped instrument with a cheese grater kind of surface, like this

With that instrument, a cup shaped hole can be fashioned in the bone and then the cup put in just like it was the real acetabulum!

@Jillie422 - I just discovered you!.....and am so jealous that you got scheduled for surgery so quickly!....But not for the reasons why. So sorry that you've been in such pain for so long that it sent up a red-alert to your surgeon. And am thankful for your sake that you got a new script. Now let's get that uti cleared up so there are no delays. I will be watching for your progress.....saying some prayers along the way....and learning from your experience. Thanks for sharing.

@Josephine Thank You ever so much for your perfect explanation of what I can expect! I very much appreciate your vast knowledge and time spent enlightening all of us! <3

@Nana2-8 So happy we've discovered each other! I'm thrilled with this wonderful website... Such great, caring people and so much super helpful information :) And Josephine is a wealth of knowledge that she unselfishly shares with all of us. We are Blessed to have so much support on our journeys back to our lives. Where are you in your adventure? Surgery date yet?

Oh forgot some of the Best News I got today at my pre op OS visit. No TED stockings after surgery!!!! I was over the moon with that news!! OS prescribes 3 weeks of Xarelto post surg. Its blood thinning properties make it unnecessary to wear those gawd awful, too tight, too hot leg binders! Gotta love modern medicine! A close friend of mine recently had a THR and she said the worst part for her was having to wear the TEDs for 6 weeks. The only blood thinner she was on, however, was aspirin. Lucky Me!
