TKR New Left Knee . . . Check!!

Niki,
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

I do have some Melatonin maybe I will try that tonight. I really need to get a good nights sleep as I have been working at least 1/2 days and need to have enough energy for that.

Back from the doc. Can you say DISAPPOINTMENT, FRUSTRATION, ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? :hissyfit: Took another set of xrays and said fracture is looking good BUT........for another week I can only put about 25% of my weight on my leg, and then for another week after that I can only put 50% of my weight on my leg. (He told me to put my foot on the scale and press until I get to about 25% of my total weight so that I know what that feels like and can judge that when I'm walking.) So for two more weeks I am still going to be hobbling around on either the walker or the crutches--with all that entails! So that takes me into December and 9 weeks without walking.

I was so sure that I would get the all clear to ditch the walker and the sticks and try out my cane (which would at least give me one free hand to carry my own cup of coffee back to my bed and my ice machine in the morning). :sigh: Looking more closely at the xrays today, the fracture is much longer than I remember it being. I thought it was about an inch and a half crack, but it is more like three inches. I just get the feeling that this was more serious than I was led to believe in the beginning. Anyway, the only piece of good news that I got was that I can get rid of that dang CPM!! I called to have it picked up as soon as I got home. So that is 6 hours every day that I won't have to spend lying in bed. I am going to be doing about a month of outpatient PT starting next Wednesday. So at least I know I will be getting out of the house a little bit!

Sorry to rant, but man, it was just very disappointing. Niki

Oh Niki I'm so sorry, you must be so fed up and frustrated to say the least. The way to reflect on this is that another 2 weeks is not so bad in the long term of your knee recovery; it's better to get the fracture absolutely sorted at this stage and then you have the rest of your life with a good knee and leg. Try and think positive thoughts (easier said than done, I know).

I'm thinking of you and hang in there Niki

What a stinker. You must be fed up. All I can say is that two weeks seems a long time now but it will pass. Have you thought of writing your Christmas cards! It's a bit early but you don't have to post them yet! Keep cheerful.

Oh Niki so sorry. It's got to be maddening!! I think it would be tough to figure out what 25% of your weight is and then being able to judge what that is when you are bearing weight....I would have kissed that CPM good bye and good riddance. You deserve a medal in more ways than one. Bless you!!

Hi, Niki-

Sorry to hear you aren't there quite yet. It must be so frustrating. It sounds like the fracture is worse than you were first led to believe. I guess the fact you can move around to some degree is better than nothing and it will improve soon.

My OS is definitely unconventional. I did have to use the CPM device for a few hours in the hospital, but that was it. I'm glad, because I hated it! My OS is with Kaiser; apparently, most of their surgeons do not like or use the CPM approach.

Do they know why the fracture happened? Not sure I saw that in the thread or I might have missed it.

Take care

sorry to hear you're still restricted, editor. But congrats on being able to get rid of the cpm!

I'm sorry for the setback Niki! :console: I hope the next couple of weeks fly by and with Thanksgiving and going out for PT it should. :friends:

So sorry to read about your continued restrictions. After what you have been thru, this latest one must seem like piling on. Hang in there, this will pass soon, b

Sorry you are disappointed and frustrated, but you are definitely making progress, which has to be good.

I wish you luck with the 25% of your weight thing - they once told me to put 10% of my weight on my crutches - what do they think we are; PhDs in Maths??

Go gently; this too will pass.

Niki, I just checked in to see how you're doing. I'm sorry to read about your continuing troubles. As frustrating as it is, hang in there. It WILL pass eventually and the memory will fade into that foggy place all nightmares go. I hope you manage to have a good Thanksgiving.

Thanks, everyone, for the support. I think I am once again over the disappointment of this latest setback. Today I typed WALK in big capital letters on December 1st on my cell phone calendar. Maybe I should also set an alert just so that I don't forget! :hysterical: At least I know that I will be walking on that day cause I don't go back to the doc until 2 weeks after that. So 12 days to go. Who knows where I'll be knee progress wise at that point. Just have to wait and see I guess. I'll have had a week of outpatient PT by the time I can start walking. I kind of feel like I've been set back a little bit without having the CPM. As much as I complained about that thing, I think it really did help keep my knee feeling flexible while being so immobile. I have still been doing some exercises and stretches on my own, but I'm feeling stiffer without the CPM.

The doc did give me clearance to start driving since I'm no longer taking narcotics during the day. (I'm still taking two hydrocodone when I go to bed, but just extra strength Tylenol during the day.) But even though he said I can drive I am reluctant to really go anywhere by myself cause it is kind of difficult to manage the crutches in and out of the car on my own. And I still have no hands free to do anything or carry anything. So I doubt I will venture out alone until I can do it without crutches.

This morning I convinced my husband to take me along in the wheelchair while he walked our dog. We have a 2-year-old black Lab who is still very much a puppy. It took her several blocks to get used to the wheelchair and stay over on one side instead of running all over the place and back and forth in front of the chair. She finally did get the hang of it, but we didn't go very far. My poor husband was working up a sweat between trying to push me on not so great sidewalks and keeping control of the dog!:th_heehee: Not sure I can convince him to give it another go tomorrow!
Niki

I bet getting outside for a bit boosted your mood. :thumb: to your husband

Niki, this will be remembered as your nightmare year. Next year, all of this will be a memory and you'll be back in the swing of things for the holidays. Be patient, try to remember the things you are thankful for this week, and know that this will pass. Have a peaceful and loving Thanksgiving!

Ha! Nightmare is definitely one way to describe it! One good thing is that the herniated cervical disk issue that I had for the 7 weeks going into surgery has finally and pretty much completely resolved itself while I've been laying around letting my fracture heal! Now I'll just have to wait and see if it stays that way or is going to be one of those that continues to flare up frequently. Been there, done that, had that surgery, and would really like to avoid it again!

Heidi, I think you were so, so wise to do both of your knees at the same time. If I ever need my other knee done, I think I would pretty much have to be in a wheelchair full time to even consider it! Maybe I'll change my mind about that as time goes on--but those little aches and pains I feel in that knee had better behave themselves.

You know I called about having the CPM picked up last Thursday when the doc told me I could get rid of it. Well, it is still sitting here waiting on them to come get it. So today I decided to get back on it because I really can feel that my knee is so much more stiff without using it. So I did a total of four hours on it today. Took me a while to get back to 102 on there! I'm starting to get a little bit concerned about my ROM. I'm sure I won't measure 102 when I go to my first outpatient PT on Wednesday. Probably more like 90 or 95 if I'm lucky. I'm 8 weeks out tomorrow, so I'm thinking they're going to expect me to be further along than that. And I still can't straighten completely. I'm guessing I'm still at 2 for extension, which is where I was from the start after surgery. Not much progress there at all.

Yesterday our weather was kind of mild so I had my husband turn the heat on in our built-in, outdoor spa. It really is like a mini swimming pool--10 feet in diameter and about waist deep for me in the middle. Anyway, after about 2 hours of heating the water was up to 100 degrees. I looked up all of the water exercises in the Total Knee Replacement/Rehab book and got in. Didn't think it was going to do much, but after about 10 minutes it felt pretty good stretching out in that warm water. I even got to walk unaided for the first time in 8 weeks. I definitely have a significant limp I'm going to have to work on once I start walking on dry land! I tried this because of what I've read on here about how much everyone who has done water therapy really likes it. I have to agree. It felt great. After I was done exercising/walking/stretching, we turned on the jets and I sat back with a nice glass of chardonnay. Ahhhhh......But, unfortunately, it is much colder today. Just can't see me getting in that water when it's so cold outside--even if the water is 100 degrees. But the gym that we belong to has a hot tub and pool, so I may tag along when my husband goes and get in the water there. Still pretty intimidating having to do it all on crutches though.

I'm still taking only Tylenol during the day for pain and two hydrocodone when I go to bed. Tomorrow night, at 8 weeks, I'm going to try just one hydrocodone along with some Tylenol at bedtime to see if that is enough to keep me comfortable during the night. I feel pretty good about almost being off of the narcotics. I'm not sure how it will go with PT though. We'll see.....:rolleyespink:
Niki

Niki, don't be surprised if you are pretty sore after your little hot tub exercises. It's surprising how much resistance from the water can sneak a lot more of a workout at you than you think. I'm always pretty sore after PT in the water. You might need both hydrocodone yet. :)
