THR New hip feels real good.

Maeve, your 12-day stint in a rehab facility sounds marvelous. In an ideal world, that's what I would have done. In the U.S., that type of rehab is no longer covered for a single THR; you have to pay out of pocket. Not an option for me. My surgeon explained it used to be covered routinely, and he would recommend it highly. Now, all that is offered is a lower level type of rehab, which is just going to a nursing home and having a PT come visit you and oversee you doing the same kinds of exercises they give you at the hospital to do on your own--squeezing your butt muscles; heel slides; etc. My surgeon vehemently urged me to NOT go to this rehab; it said for one thing there is a big concern you'd contract an infection or something. Also, boring and depressing and you'd do much better at home. He only recommends it if you have absolutely no one to care for you at home. I was lucky to have a cousin help me my first week, so I took the surgeon at his word. But I know of people in the States who have paid for the rehab such as yours and they all just recommended it highly! It sounds terrific.

I wonder if other bonesmarties in the U.S. have had their surgeons tell them the same thing about the "nursing home" rehab places that ins. cos. tend to pay for in lieu of the really good rehab places.

Detzalady, are you still doing a little better with the groin pain?
And how are your outpatient PT sessions going?
I hope you're feeling a bit better. You are very bionic, I see. You have been through a lot!

Peaches My surgeon tries to send you home opposed to a rehab facility. One reasoning behind it is insurance company's clamping down on paying for it. As long as you have someone for aleast a week to help you out, and are doing well in hospital therapy he'll send his patients home.

detzalady, just checking in to see how you are doing. How is the groin pain and the PT. I see the OS on Monday for my 5 month post op check up. I still have some groin pain on and off and still walking with a limp. I don't know if the limp is from my knee or the hip. Well, hope you are doing better, have a good Mother's day.

fiberlady,Peaches, Was doing better, but decided to go to the nursery to get the plants for my garden, and flowers, an hanging baskets. Then went to my daughters to see my youngest granddaughter, also my daughter. I'm a little sore, but probably will feel it more tomorrow, so will take it easy. Out patient therapy went well. I even drove there myself. felt great to get out by my self.Hubby is still doing most of the stuff around the house, he said I don't need to worry about it till I see the doctor. Isn't that sweet. Hope all the mothers out there have a great Mothers day.

Hi detazlady Sounds like you had a lovely day but learn from my mistakes and make sure you rest the next day especially as you were sore. Your hubby sounds lovely and it would benefit you if you left the chores to him for a bit longer

Hi, Detzalady. I'm so glad outpatient therapy went well and impressed you could drive. Yes, those "chores" we all do, even the ones that are kind of fun, seem to really take their toll and must be "counted" toward activities that we do in a day. Why can't I learn my lesson on this? Your hub sounds awesome! Hope the groin pain is better. Groin pain is areal enigma to me....

Yesterdays PT was interesting, did the sitting stepper, the leg press with one weight, and the treadmill walking in four different directions. Didn't feel too bad. Am sore alittle today, but not bad. Will give it ago tomorrow, and the Thursday my 4 week cheek up with my Surgeon. Will let you all know how it goes.

Kim22,It's has flat plates you put your feet on while sitting and push up and down on.just like walking and or riding a bike. not much stress on any muscles.

I have not come across them but what a great idea !

Had my 4 week follow up with the surgeon today, and he said everything is looking great. I have 4 more weeks of following the 90 degree rule, and also got a high 5 from him because I am able to go up and down the stairs regularly. I no longer use the cane on a regular basis, only on uneven ground, if I get tired and start limping, or out shopping to a lot of different stores.I have only taken about 3 pain meds in the past 5 days, I just take extra strength Tylenol, and ice. He said if I need them take them but if I don't then that's fine. I have an issue with constipation on a reg basis this is why I choose not to use pain meds as much as I could. If I didn't have the problems I do I would probably still be using them more often, this is also why I didn't take Iron afterwards. Hope every one else is doing well, and advancing as well as can be expected. Have a great day.

Has anyone ever had a gap along their incision area of their hip replacement? My surgery was april16th. and now there is a lump and gap where my scare is. when I'm walking alone or carrying something I get alot of pain there, if I squeeze it together then it doesn't hurt as much. Any Ideas?

Your description is a bit scant, my dear.

What kind of 'gap' - in the muscle, in the skin? Is it open?
How 'squeeze it together'? With your fingers?
Anything you can photograph to show me?
Have you spoken to your surgeon about it?

I have an idea but want to know your answers first.
