Revision TKR Never give up, keep trying, don't settle - that's me, Bonnie

Thanks Judy. Bonnie, you should have shot me a pm (or a 'conversation as we must now call them!) and asked me this.
It happened to me too and all it was is that some ticks in boxes didn't get transferred in the change. So I just put it in and voila! You K is back again as is mine!

Well don't I feel like a nut. I just got a good look at my knee (I was wearing capri length pants prior) and I do have a big bruise in that area. I'm not sure how it happened and I can even feel a shooting pain there when I walk today but...this is what I think it is.

Friday evening I was riding my bike home from work. I was carrying a bag with me, when I went from dirt and grass on the shoulder or the road and up onto a concrete bridge, the bag swang and through me off balance. I fell into the guard rail catching myself before I hit the ground but my mountain bike did go out from under me and I just bet that it banged my knee when the bike went down. The reason I didn't notice early on is because I was more concerned with the scratches and scrapes on my forearm, fingers and calf. I bet the pain and bruising is from my almost fall. I say it again...my doctor tells me to ride a bike but I hurt myself more on a bike than I ever did running. With the exception of Valentine's Day 2010 I was running, tripped on a tree root and fell and broke my radial head bone...left elbow! Then I ran with a cast on!

Ouch, Bonnie! I hope your knee soon feels better.

I know how you feel - a bit battered and rather fragile - as I had a fall a week ago. No harm done, but I did feel rather shaken. When you fall as an adult, it really shakes you up, doesn't it?

Best wishes,
Celle

Sounds like its still a bit of a tough go. I'm so sorry that its been such a hard time. Seems that some just breeze through this thing and others have more to deal with. And then your husband on top ...hope you're taking some 'me' time every day ..it helps.

Thank you Celle and Randi. Yes falling is always my biggest fear. I have fallen 3 times on my bike now and each time has affected my knee. I realized ongoing today I have at least 5 bruises (4 on my TRK leg) with scrapes on my forearm and fingers.

As for 'me' time...still don't get much of that but today my daughter came and got me and we had a pedicure together. My husband is still weak and frail so I do most everything around here. He is very appreciative though.

Hi everyone, I am still here although I've not been online lately. I think I have that dreaded pes anserine tendonitis along the side of my TKR again. My knee is stiff and hurts when I walk with sharp pain every now and then. To top it all off, my left hip is hurting now. I have no idea why, I've not been doing anything lately to hurt myself! Deep inside my hip it just aches all the way down my leg. What is this? Maybe I should be on the hip side? I can't see the OS till July 20th, I don't know if I can take this hip pain until then...may have to see another doctor, but I also wanted him to look at my knee and that is why I should go to my OS...Any ideas? I know knees, not hips!

Re: I am on the other side now friends!

Sandy, thank you so much...I read it am I am crying again but you are right is comforting to know that one day we can meet again. My husband was very torn on Monday morning, even thought of not telling me before surgery but he knew that I would be looking for her to let her know I'd be home in a few days. I told him to put her in a blanket , drop me off at the hospital then go back home and take care of Molly. So once again he was torn about being here during my surgery or leaving. I told him I would be in good hands but more than anything else I wanted Molly to betaken care of. He left the hospital went home and got Molly and took her to our vet for cremation. He made all of her arrangements during my surgery. We should have her ashes returned to us on Friday. I will do like you and put this poem next to her ashes. My husband made it back to the hospital in time to talk to the doctor after my surgery. Very emotional week for us and our kids!

Bonnie

Bonnie I just read your account of losing your beloved Molly on the day of your surgery...so sad to hear. I had to make the difficult decision of having my beautiful lab Sidney put to rest two weeks prior to my surgery and it was the hardest and thing I have ever done. We had 12 yrs of long walks together so I really understand the added emotional burden coupled with the knee surgery!

Bonnie,

If you are having hip pain going down your leg it might be from your back. I get that kind of pain, thought it was bursitis in my hip, turns out it is inflamation in my SI joint. They basically do the same and inject it with a steroid, but mine gets done by my pain management DR and he does it under the florescope. Mine has really worked well.

Thank you Deb, it still is such a sad thing for me to think about. I am sorry about your beloved Sidney, pets are so hard to lose. What I never told back then was how Molly died. I was so devasted. While my husband was fixing her breakfast, she fell into our pool and drowned. Such a loving little dog never deserved to die that way after 14 years. Her vision was bad with depth perception, I think she tried to step when she didn't need to and stumbled into the pool. It was all in less than 5 minutes. My husband tried to resuscitate her, but was too late. I never saw her, I wanted to only remember her when I kissed her goodnight the night before. It has been an extremely hard 15 months, as I nearly lost my husband too, to Septic Shock, he is still trying to recover after 5 months. Life is so hard at times, I thank you for your kind words.

Thank you Rose, I guess I will find out on the 20th. I have been told that I have arthritis in my back. My lower back hurts too. But it is my hip/leg with the constant aching.

Bonnie,

That is how the back reacts. Referred pain generally speaking my back does not hurt just the ungodly pains shooting down my legs, and pain in my hip, if you touch where the hip bursa is I see stars but it all starts in the back. I have had back problems, from neck to butt, for years. Had microdiscectomy on lumbar L4-S1, really helped but then inflamation went into SI joint.

Thank you for all your sharing. Life has sent you many challenges and you have managed them all. If I could ask you one more question...I get the impression you are a younger patient, so are you worried that running could shorten the life of your new knee? My OS has said no running.

Hi Bonnie, Sorry to hear about your pain. It sounds intense. Do you have something strong you can take meanwhile?

HI Deb, good morning. No I am not so young, I just act young. I turned 60 several months ago. Running had been such a huge part of my life that it is hard to let go. After my kids had grown running was the center of my universe. My social circle, my best friends and confidants, and in a flash it was all gone. Literally...after 4 years of knee trouble, many shots, physical therapy, I had run my last marathon in Oklahoma City May of 2010. On the 4th of July 2010 I set out on a easy run with my daughter, and Acccckkkk my knee just said no more. Very painful I walked for a 1/4 mile just trying to walk it out, then tried to run again, same thing, bad bad pain. Basically it was over then. Yes I did run the 1/2 marathon in Houston this past January I guess because I had to prove something to myself and I wanted to be able to say I was done, when 'I' say I am done.

Yes there is worry that the knee could wear out too early and loosening of the implant. I know in my heart that I should not run, it is so hard to let go. The running community goes on without me in Houston now, and I feel so lazy on a Saturday morning, sitting drinking coffee and not out running. I will always be active in some way, I do love where I work out with weights. My PT facility is also a sports performance training center as well. I have been there so long that we are like a family. It is not the replacement for running but somewhere I do feel like I belong.

I would just like it if my doctor or any doctor would just sit me down and tell me exactly all the concerns about running after TKR, instead of just saying NO running, you don't want it to wear out. It is like telling Serena Williams that she can no longer play tennis again. She would not say..."oh, ok." In comparison, no we are not the same, she is a world class athlete, and I am not, but I just bet that I love running every much as she loves playing tennis.

I am trying to come to terms with it and tell myself that this part of my life is over but it makes me sad. I am so tired of being sad.

Good morning Bassplayer, and how are you doing after your second TKR? I still have Norco left over from my TKR that I never finished taking. I have taken one at bed time and during the day I take 1/2 so I can still function. Never throw out your pain pills, you never know when you will need them again.

I know what you mean about the referred pain. Kind of like if your ear aches, you don't know if your tooth is making your ear ache or your ear making your tooth ache, since all the nerves run along the same way. I will call and see if there have been any cancellations so I can try to get in before the 20th.

Wow - sounds just like my pain today on the 'good' side. I suspect mine is from my back...a little scary since I haven't had this since my spinal fusion 21 years ago ..so please do get it checked out properly. Don't mean to worry you -I have a strange body and underlying spinal condition. The good news is, for most people sciatic pain usually goes away on its own though it is very intense while it lasts. Hope you get to the bottom of this and feel better.

Good, glad you have the Norco. Things for me are going more slowly with the 2nd TKR, but there are improvements all the time - small ones.

They say that no two knees are ever the same. The only good thing about having a second one done is that you know what to except post surgery. All improvements are good, even if they are small ones, they all add up!
