THR My new Right Hip

Anone else 5-6 weeks posterior approach. Would love to hear what your up to with recovery. I feel like it is going so slow. I can walk around the house with my walker, walk about four steps without it. To the car and that's about it. I had hoped I'd be walking around the block by now. The hip muscles are stopping that as well as all the pain on the left non surgical side. Hope to hear from others!

@rob3dr How are you doing? We are almost 6 weeks post op. I was thinking about my fellow hippies today and wondering how you are?

Hello @tandmcox88 , I am 7wks post op today but anterior approach. I have hip dysplasia and FAI which ultimately resulted in the need for my first joint replacement, so my situation is different than yours. I did have juvenile RA as a young child, but no problems with that as an adult. So I think your RA is maybe making your recovery a little...confusing (for lack of a better word!). At least I think that's how I would feel I suppose. I know a recurring theme I read here is we all have different recoveries and need to not compare ours to someone elses. That being said, it sure isn't easy! I am getting discouraged and feel like I am now going backwards at 7 wks. Thought I would have a steady increase in my recovery but I am now having increasing pain and still hurts to walk. I give it to God and count my blessings for what I have and I know I have much to be thankful for, but it is a bit frustrating to me right now. I think I am allowing myself a bad day :umm: I wish you only the best in your continuing recovery, and I am glad we are all in this together!

@katflwr Hi. Yes the RA is hurting all the other joints at this point making recovery slow. I will get there. I also seem to have a few good days and then bam I am going backwards. I am sorry you are having trouble. I am starting to stress about time. I have to go back to work in just over 6 weeks, will I be ready, will I be able to walk, drive, sit at a computer desk for 8-12 hours a day? I know there is no way to tell but it worries me. Did you contact your surgeon about the increase in pain? I wish you the best and please keep me posted on how you are doing. I guess we just need to take it one day and one step at a time. Keeping you in my prayers.

six weeks down and in pain. still not able to walk without the walker more than 5 steps. Still taking pain meds around the clock. What to do?

hi @tandmcox88 !! We are 6 weeks out. Sorry to hear you are still having issues. As for me, all is well. I still dont have much of the flexibility I used to, and still a little swelling and tenderness, but nothing bad. I can even jog a little, though the doc advised against it so I've kept it to a 'trot'. Walking around now, if one didnt know prior to, they wouldnt know anything had ever been wrong with me. I can even now stand on one foot and put on socks...haha... alwasy been my litmus test. Stand on one foot, throw on a sock, then switch and do the other....no worries.
Hopefully you've spoken with your doc about the apparently slow recovery? Wishing you all the best!

Hi @ tandmcox88,
Thought I would give you a little encouragement by telling you I was rather slow in my recovery too. Had my RTHR on Sep 9th and I remember at Holloween was barely able to walk without walker yet. As a matter of fact I think I went back to it for another couple of weeks at night at that point. It still hurt to put full weight on that leg up to about the 10 week point I believe and then I still used a cane for a few more weeks. Didn't walk unaided till 3 months out. It is so easy to be worried there is something wrong and different about us, I know I did. But you will catch up to the lucky ones who breeze through so fast. Like everyone says, it takes time. It really does, one day it will just happen. You will realize "wow the pain is gone". Don't be discouraged right now. Some of us just take a little longer but it will happen.

P.S.
Just this week was finally able to bend my knee enough to get that sock on and I'm at 41/2 months!

@tandmcoxx88 I'm so sorry to hear that your recovery isn't going as good as you were hoping. I had a bi-lateral THR lateral approach five weeks ago. Doing well, I think. The most important thing is ATTITUDE! You cannot change what's happening to you but you can change how you react to it. Stay positive!

Eat well, only do what PT recommends and ice after any activity. In the beginning I had a bit of issue with my sacrum. I followed the ice advice for my hips but for my sacrum pain the heating pad felt a lot better! Not sure if heat might help your non-operated side.

Rest/sleep is very important to help your body heal. I took Gravol with my night time Tylenol for a while to allow me to sleep better. If you're not sleeping good, you can't recover as well.

Hang in there!

Like @Rhonda K my progress was very slow & steady......I had to use one crutch for 6 months....I felt frustrated too....BUT....it all worked out fine in the end....some run...but some of us crawl through recovery....honestly do take your time...it won't be rushed & my hip is 'fabulous' now @tandmcox88.
Take care....Chrissie x

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. I'm still having a lot of pain in the left hip and I can hardly bend my left knee. As far as the right new hip it is doing well. Not much pain there until I try to walk a few steps without the walker. I feel like all I do is get out bed, shower, get my breakfast, sit in recliner, do some homework on the lap top. Then its lunch time. After I fix and eat lunch I'm wiped out so I nap. TV or games on iPad till hubby gets home. I feel like I need to do more than sit around but I can't yet. As far as sleep, I don't sleep more than two hours at a time due to my bladder. Once I'm up its hard to go back to sleep. I'm seeing my rheumatologist and surgeon next week. Again thank you all.

@tandmcox88 are you still icing and elevating? Sounds like that knee could benefit from some icing. Glad you are seeing your rheumatologist. Can you ask for pain meds to help you get more mobile?

@Jaycey
Hi Im still taking pain medication every 6 hours 2 vicodin. If I miss a dose I am miserable. I am icing my left knee daily. I am using a salonpos patch on it daily. It is still so swollen when I walk I feel a bone hitting my right knee. I also feel like it is going to give out on me. I am so scared of falling and hurting my new right hip. I cant wait to to talk to my Doctors next week. Thank you for the suggestions.

Gosh @tandmcox88 does that knee need TKR? Unfortunately what I have experienced is that when you correct one area the next one starts complaining. Bone on bone knee pain does not sound good. I'm going to tag our medical expert and see what she thinks @Josephine .

@Jaycey I am not sure, when my right hip was giving me trouble so did my right knee. Now that I had the right hip replaced my right knee is just fine no issues at all (knocking on wood). I am afraid it is coming from my left hip. I will find out on the 26th. Thank you for helping.

@Josephine
Good morning. I have a concern I want to ask you about. The past two days if anything touches a part of my incision it is tender and hurts. Last night it felt slightly warmer then the left hip. Not hot just warmer. On Tuesday I'll be 7 weeks post op. Also in front of the incision it feels like hard alligator skin swollen lump like feeling, could this be infection starting? Thank you for your help.

I did it! I walked from the car to the dr. Office to the exam room, back to the car. Then from the car to the shoe store to the restaurant and back to the car with no walking aides except my hubby by my side!! New hip actually feels fine. Non surgical hip is shooting pains down to my foot and my knee is completely swollen and throbbing. Ice ice baby time. 7 weeks post op today.

That's a perfectly normal manifestation of healing. Nothing to worry about. Same for the alligator skin feeling. Early days - it will normalise in a few month's time.

Thank you @Josephine. I appreciate the help. I am having a very hard time walking. My surgical hip is ok it is the muscles that hurt so badly and my left leg is acting like my right one was prior to surgery. I see my surgeon on Monday. I'm scared he is going to want to schedule for hip replacement on my left leg or knee. I am getting groin pain and shooting pains down to my toes. My knee is swollen and sometimes I can not bend it and sometimes I cant straighten it. I hope you are recovering well.

Well my friends I almost fell. In pain. My non surgical knee gave out, I had catch my self on my dresser. Sitting here in tears.
