THR My new Right Hip

As far as the PT exercises I have about 10 different one PT wants me to do. Like standing at the kitchen sink and to to lifts, mini squats, Raising my leg backwards so heal touches my but, Side step walking along the counter.
Yikes! Hips actually don't need much exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.
All for range of motion and to rebuild the torn muscles.
To REBUILD torn muscles? The only muscle that was torn was the one that was involved in the avulsion fracture. You don't need exercise to repair that, you need rest!
I don't like taking them I am terrified of getting addicted
I reinforce Jaycey's post. You need pain meds after surgery because surgery hurts! as long as you have that pain, you won't get dependent much less addicted!
Why is the skin around my incision peeling? Should I be putting anything on it at all.
Are you sure it's the skin or the adhesive they used?
Just what I was gong to say Rob! :thumb:

Not sure I'm writing in the correct place. Had my left hip replaced December 11. Came home the afternoon of December 13. Was on the walker for 3-4 days and am now using cane. Physical therapist says I am doing unbelievably well. I am so relieved. I was so worried about this and so far it has been absolutely terrific. I don't even have much pain.

Merry Christmas everyone. Hope y'all are healing very well. I actually went out to the store yesterday. Walked three isles of a family dollar store and I was done. The hubby took me to lunch. So far so good today. Week three seems to be a positive turning point in recovery.

Good to hear @tandmcox88 . I've been following you closely since we had our surgery on the same day. This week for me has been great. I can just about run up and down the stairs now... the only motion that causes me pause is twisting, but beyond that, I'm fully functional for 'normal' activities. I'm not ready to go back to class yet, but hoping soon. Worked Monday-Wed this week and no issues at all. I still get a little tight toward the end of the day if I've been moving all day, but nothing of note. Keep on going at your own pace and glad to hear this seems to be your turning point. Onward from here!

Hi @rob3dr, So glad to here you are doing so well. I am envious. I feel I am doing good but recovery is going so slow. I can manage one step haven't tried more or needed to yet. I can stand up for about 5-10 minutes at a time then the fatigue and soreness hits. Apparently I am having some issues with sciatica in my lower back on the same side as the hip replacement. I still can believe your back to work. To me that is amazing. I have another 9 weeks before I will be released to go back. Hope you had a fantastic Christmas and Have a Happy New Year.

Hi @tandmcox88 ! Please dont feel as though your recovery is inadequate. As I understand, we all recover at different rates. I taught martial arts and kickboxing for 26 years prior to this surgery and so was in pretty good shape going in I would say. Cant wait to get back at it. Just go at your own pace, whatever that may be and be happy that you are on the road to recovery!! ....and I never said I was 'released' to go back to work..haha.. I just went. :no-fin:
I still have some downs as well. For example last night, my knees were aching so badly that I barely got two hours of sleep. Still unsure of why my knees ache, but I'm sure it will pass!~ Been out in the garage today goofing off and enjoying the warm (for us) weather. Hitting 57 degrees here today...woo-hoo!
Hope the same great Christmas and a Happy New Year for you and yours as well!

Question for all hips. All around my incision feels hard. Like alligator skin. Surgeon said not to put anything on it. Will this go away?

An area about the size of a silver dollar around my incisions are hard... almost like wood under my skin. When I had past surgery, that kind of thing went away on its own so I never gave it a thought this go round. I'd say it will all go away in time! Hope you are doing well other than the gator skin!

Certainly had the same.... Skin all round the incision felt hard! I was told to leave it & not put anything on it at all..... It went... Eventually!!
Hope you are recovering well otherwise. Xxxx

Wow I did not even feel the staple come out. I was braced and ready and she was done. :)
So I went to get the copies of my radiology reports and the radiologist did not he suspected AVN forming. Surgeon says nope. Who is right did I have AVN or not?
The impression states:
Abnormal bone marrow fluid signal with irregularity involving the right femoral head has developed compared to the prior from April 2013. Subtle flattening of the femoral head along the superior margin also seen. Changes of developing AVN on the right suspected. There are subchondrual cystic changes seen in the roof of the acetabulum as described previously.
I am so glad the surgery is over and done with. The surgeon said this morning I am walking very well he sounded so surprised and look surprised.

Happy New Year, Pain Free Hugs for 2015

How do you know if your other hip is failing? My left leg is really painful. I am getting shooting pains from my groin to my ankle. I can't bend my knee without excruciating pain. It kind of feels like when my right hip went bad. I am just shy of 5 weeks post op. I don't want to do this again.

Tina, as you recover from your surgery, there are all kinds of changes going on that may be causing referred pain to your other hip and leg. You are gradually learning to walk now with your new normal gait instead of your old abnormal gait, and this brings new muscles and soft tissue into play. So it's probably a bit soon to be able to evaluate the pain in your left hip. That said, what was the status of your left hip when your OS did your original work up? Did he see signs of problems in that hip as well? You mentioned at the beginning of your thread that your RA was attacking all your joints. If it is causing deterioration in both hips equally, then yeah....you may decide you do want to do this again.

Also...have you been increasing your activity level significantly in ways that may have strained your left leg? And are you managing your pain from surgery adequately? Go back to the basics....rest, ice, and medicate effectively. When do you go back to see your OS next? That's the time to ask about your left hip...unless it continues to be excruciating. If that's the case, call him a whole lot sooner.

Sharon

PS....around the two month mark, I started getting quite painful shin splints in both legs. A wise admin here suggested I buy new shoes. She was spot on...that resolved the problem immediately. If your old shoes have wear patterns from your old gait, it will interfere with your new gait, and that can trigger all kinds of trouble. So if a few days of rest don't help, that's another thing to try also.

Hi! You are still at a very early stage of recovery - I think it is Poppet who reminds us it's a marathon, not a sprint. This site will help with all sorts of tips (like ditching the old shoes - who would have thought of that!) but the best advice is rest, ice and medicate. Don't wait until the pain is bad, at least for another few weeks.
If you manage to read a lot of our stories you will realise that we each are unique and so are our recovery paths. A recurring theme is needing patience, I am the worst!
Here's to a good 2015 for all - you will get there!
Anne

Thank you for your advice ladies. I appreciate it. My surgeon focused on my right hip because it was so bad. I never asked him about the left because all my pain was on the right. I am getting new shoes today. Hopefully that will help even though I'm home still and rarely put shoes on unless we have to go out. I am taking vicoden every 5 to 6 hours of pain is bad enough if not bad extra strength Tylenol. Last night I could not even turn the door knob to open a door from wrist pain. Hoping RA meds will kick in fast.

Hi Tina, I do hope you get some relief soon from your RA meds quickly :)

I noticed that I had not provided you with my links - you may like to browse these. Nutrition plays a huge part in surgical recovery, in fact it is one of the 'forgotten topics' of recovery..

The following is a link to an article which provides the current science regarding the healing beneath and around the implant and approximate timeframes for the healing phases and processes and the relevant nutritional information for each phase.

Healing Phases & Nutrition

This second link is to other nutritional articles which you may find interesting, including one relating to bone health.

@tandmcox88 Welcome to bone smart. I am just over a year since my RTHR. I can identify with the multiple issues. I actually broke over 20 bones in an accident in 09 but it took 5 years of pain before I could find someone to replace it. Everyone else kept telling me I was too young. It's a long story but the short of it is the initial surgery was a pin to heal the hip break but it caused it to grow back crooked and it would spontaneously dislocate. You are in a good place here at bonesmart. As my grandfather used to tell me never take advice from an indian who has not worn your moccasins. In other words get advice from people who have walked through what you have walked through. I too suffer from RA mostly exacerbated from the trauma. I have had 16 surgeries in the last 5-1/2 years and each has presented its on set of issues but if you were not patient before your body will force you to be now. In my case my physician has told me it could take me up to 18 months to know the real effect of where I will be long term. I am one of the few that still takes pain meds but mine is not just for my hip and they are not needed every day. When you get to a place where you can get a bath Epson salt baths have done wanders for me. You can even get them scented like Lavender which is supposed to help with the production of melatonin in the body. Like everyone here is saying just take it one day at a time. Celebrate your victories and scream at your failures if with no one else but us. My prayers are with ya. After all of this I am about to start back to nursing school. I was a paramedic for 18 years when I had my accident. I have a great private disability but at my age I want to go back to work. I see we are close to the same age so if you need help with anything or have any questions feel free to ask.

@medic4355 Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so sorry you have had to endure all that you have and are you v thru now. I walked about 4 steps again this evening to let the dog out. I think I scared the you know what iut my husband. I turned to and said what do you think. His response was don't over do it. I thought he would have been thrilled and happy since it was the first time he saw me walk with no assistance in six or more months. Now I'm layi g here at 3:30 am with pain from the groin to my knee in my left leg. Not sure why the left leg is giving me so much trouble but I'm seeing my rheumatologist this afternoon and then my cardiologist.
