TKR Mireille's RTKR 4 months

@Tacomamike Thanks so much for the encouragement, it really helps. I'm glad you're doing well. Did you ever go back to PT or did you just minimize the visits? I like going to PT with the exception of that particular exercise today. I have noticed that my quads are listening better to my instructions.

@Mireille
Remember that it's your knee and you are the only one with the right to say what will happen to it. The PT works for you, not the other way round. She/he has to please you. You don't have to please them.

To help you remember this, and make it easier to be assertive, read this article:
Saying no to therapy - am I allowed to?

This article summarises the BoneSmart point of view about PT:
BoneSmart philosophy for sensible post op therapy

And, just in case your PT threatens you with the prospect of an MUA, or with a knee that sets for ever, remember that ROM can continue to improve for a year or more after a TKR, so there's no need to rush.
Myth busting: the "window of opportunity" in TKR

My first PT group had me doing things I didn't know were bad for my knee, but I knew they hurt and refused to do them because they hurt. I wasn't part of BoneSmart during my TKR recovery, however I really don't like pain so when they had me doing squats and pulling on my knee, I said, "nope, not happening". Then my second PT group was so wonderful and gentle. I loved going to PT! I think we need to put as much into finding a good PT as we do finding the right OS.

@Mireille. Patience, patience, patience. I quit PT after the second session left me in pain for 48 hours. Just living the mantras and starting to feel better every day. This weeks accomplishments at 6/10 weeks. Reading, I can READ again!!!!! Sleeping in virtually any position with my 6 extra pillows. Stairs holding on to both railings up and down like a big girl (first time in years!), I still ice and elevate at bedtime, in the early morning and during mid day each time for more than 2 hours. I'm taking Tramadol 100mg AM and PM, 50 mg mid day, Celebrex 200mg daily, Tylenol 3900mg divided in three doses of arthritis strength. When walking I tip much less and when I tip most times I can get balanced again without my poles or hubbies hand. I can ride The recumbent bike at level 4 for 10 minutes with no repercussions. I think I see a dim light at the end of my tunnel. BoneSmart is correct. It is time and allowing the tissues to heal that works not traumatizing them further with exercises. Just be gentle and have lots of patience. You will see the light soon!

That is fantastic @Red's Mom Way to go! :loveshwr:
Time is our friend. I'm so glad you can read again. I haven't tried again in a while but I'm sure it will happen. Enjoy your reading!

I actually feel ok today, even after that episode at PT. For the 1st time ever, I was able to do straight leg raises without any help whatsoever and without pain. All by myself, at home while doing some exercises. I also, today, am able to lift my leg onto the pillows and bed with no assistance, painlessly. Huge victory for me. Excited about what the future will bring. :yahoo:

@Mireille your doing great ! I fought with my in home Pt , they made threats and stuff, i did what I felt was enough, and that was it!
My OS said it was my call on outpatient, I chose 6 weeks, he put down, 2 times 6 weeks. The lady who runs it is mean i and i will not go to her any more, but my usual asst therapist is very nice , supportive and helpful, my ankle was and still is a problem, she rocktaped that for me and i cut my therapy to once pet week. Lady who rescheduled me said very quietly , yeah boss lady has no patience, lol

@mwetzel394 Thanks so much! Good days and bad days but we have to keep on moving forward.

Regarding your PT, that is terrible :censored:, so sorry you have to go through that. Is it possible for you to go to a different place? Do not let that "boss lady" touch you again. This recovery is hard enough without having to deal with a PT that treats it's patients that way. You are paying for those services and the last they can do is treat you respect. I hope PT gets better for you. Best of luck!

@Celle I was able to take a catnap while laying on my side with a pillow in between the knees. Operated knee on the bed, good knee on top. Felt great to get off my back, lol. Is it ok to sleep with an ice wrap without elevating? I want to try sleeping on my side tonight. Thanks in advance.

Sure. That's OK. Sleep however you are comfortable.
Elevate as much as you can during the daytime.

So today at 4 1/2 weeks I've actually had a pretty good day! Just 3 days ago I felt like there was no light at the end of the tunnel and since yesterday, I see a glimmer of light. I've been doing my PT exercises at home 3 times a day since Friday, uncomfortable but not painful. It was actually easier today. I can move my leg up and down, off the bed and into the car without the help of my other leg. All on my own, yeah! My husband took me out to lunch, we went on a short grocery trip and we walked our beloved doggie, Cocoa, this morning. So happy and feeling more myself. The knee is holding up well! Slight swelling but I iced and elevated for an hour 4 times today. All in all, OP PT has been good for me and I'm glad I did it. There is a noticeable change. Oh and most importantly I got 7 hours straight of sleep last night. It's a miracle!! I've gained more confidence that things will be better. My knee determines the timing and I just need to go along for the ride.

Thanks again to my fellow Bonesmarties. Your invaluable encouragement and sharing keeps me going when I want to give up!

This is what my right knee looks like tonight after an activity filled day! :yes!:

@Mireille that's great to hear that you've been doing your PT exercises 3x per day and that they are getting easier and your leg is getting stronger. My OS told me that no matter how good of a job he did with the surgery that if I didn't commit 100% to the rehab that my recovery would be much slower. I hope you continue to improve!

Sounds really good @Mireille. Its so hard at first to know what's for the best. A 'professional' telling you that you must do x, y and z or else but your knee saying nooooo! However, there is hope. I've survived the big threat -a MUA- and it wasn't bad at all! I plan to do what my VG physio says plus the rest, ice and elevate. My knee can swell very quickly but reduce back down rapidly with icing. Your knee doesn't look swollen at all. I assume you were wearing leggings or are your legs usually that grey colour?!

@Spex10 hahaha...you made me laugh, thanks, if my legs were that gray color I'd have to be in the hospital :rotfl:

The leggings actually help give me a sense of mild compression even thought they are not really tight, just snug.

You are on the right track for your recovery and things will get better. Just like most everyone says, it takes time. We just have to keep at it.

In home PT was terrible but OP has really helped me. Everyone is different, we just have to find the way that works best for each of us. Best of luck to you!

@mbrown what a difference for me since I started OP PT, amazing. I ditched my crutch indoors and the swelling is contained. Thanks for the encouragement! My grey leg will be changing colors soon.
:rofsign:

It all depends on your therapist. I had terribly aggressive therapists right after my TKR. They even put heat on my knee, which only added to my swelling. But I changed PT groups after my infection and they were wonderful! Never caused any pain, but also I was 6 weeks post op when I went.

@Mireille , you have very little swelling! I can barely tell which knee was done.

@KarriB I totally agree with you, my in home PT was like Attila the Hun, I only had her for 4 sessions and then I said no more. I started OP just last week.

Even though I have very little swelling on the outside I still feel it on the inside which is still limiting my ROM. I'm not rushing it because it is getting better. I'm doing my exercises but trying hard to be patient. It will come when it's ready.

I think you said you were doing your exercises several times a day. You could safely leave one out and see what happens to that internal swelling.
