TKR Mireille's RTKR 4 months

@Mireille, your scar looks so happy and healthy! OMG! did you put anything on it? I've been too scared to put nothing on my scar yet - not to mention anything on my legs (lotion, etc)... For fear of keeping unwanted buggy critters too close to my shiny new knee. The result has been lizard leg.

I, too, am having problems with the internal swelling. No words of wisdom, but I'll bow down to the ortho gods and include you in my pleas to make the internal swelling go away

BTW - that last photo is great. "Beam me up, Scotty!"

@L.I.T Thanks! I haven't put anything on my scar. I still have some glue and marker and according to the PT I have a tiny internal stitch that is peeking through at the very top. I spoke to my surgeon on Friday and he says nothing to worry about. Just not to pull it out pick at it.

I did start putting some Nivea hydrating lotion on my leg and a little around the scar, not on it. I still have some lizard leg, lol, the picture is just prettier than what it really is, hahaha...

The ortho Gods will def take care of us. Live long and prosper!

Definitely hold off on putting anything right on your scar. For obvious reasons we waited for nearly two and half months before putting anything on m scar and I didn't put anything on my leg either. Once we did the PTs used Palmers Cocoa Butter to massage my knee. I'm now addicted to the stuff and use it on my feet, elbows etc.

Oh, you mentioned the dreaded feet! Aaaaaiiiieeeeeee, I can't even stand to look at mine right now! I will be so happy to be able to lotion (Flashback to silence of the lambs :yikes:) again! Two and a half months, you say.... Well, only one and a half to go :thud:

Lizard leg!! Exactly. I don't know why my operated leg has such dry scaly skin. I sometimes massage my calf and sides of knee with Bio Oil but that only seems to have a temporary effect. I don't massage my scar although the physio said I should. Don't worry mods -I promise I won't!

If I had to define "gross" right now, it would be my feet. Eewwww....
:holysheep:
I need a pedi so bad, they might charge me double. I feel bad for the person who gets to do the job. They're going to need a sander. :rotfl:

@KarriB my PT used heat in my knee on Friday. I asked them about it and they said that after 2 weeks and if the swelling is under control that they used a combo of heat and ice. The heat brings additional blood flow to the area to speed healing. I trust them immensely and they are very very well respected. (Professional athletes are in there all the time).

Why can't you used lotion for 2.5 months? I don't think anyone has told me this, or if they did I missed it.

I think it depends on the individual scar. I def wouldn't put anything on it without OS approval. Just in case.

You can put lotion on your scar once the skin is completely healed, with no open areas or scabs.
To put anything on it sooner risks introducing infection.

KarriB didn't use anything for 2.5 months because she had had an infection that needed treatment and slowed down her initial recovery. 2.5 months was appropriate in her case, but it's not a general rule.

Gotcha

Yes, that's why I said "for obvious reasons" meaning my infection. We were very very careful and my 2nd PT docs didn't use anything on my knee but ice and later Palmers. The first PTs put heat and weights on my two week knee to make my knee straight, it only served to make my knee swell more. It's funny because my 2nd and long term PTs didn't use heat or weights for extention and my extention is in the negative.

@L.I.T you don't need to wait 2.5 months. Just ask your OS when it's ok or wait until the incision is absolutely healed with no scabs or yucky pieces as Celle said.

@mbrown I was pretty excited to pass a Pittsburgh Penguin and a famous QB coming in after hours for their treatment with my group, however they used different therapists due to injury vs surgery.

@Tacomamike Thanks so much for the encouragement, it really helps. I'm glad you're doing well. Did you ever go back to PT or did you just minimize the visits? I like going to PT with the exception of that particular exercise today. I have noticed that my quads are listening better to my instructions.
I stopped going to PT. I walk a lot and just started riding my bike around the neighborhood. Some mornings I wake up and realize that, "hey, my knee is getting better!" It comes in spurts.

Hello, so today was my 4th OP PT and my 5 week newkneeversary. I'm so much more happier and feel such a big difference. Last Friday I was at 70 ROM, 3 extension. Today I'm at 85/-1 with no assistance. It's motivating to see improvement. I'm walking better and I'm more committed than in prior weeks. My personal goal is to reach that elusive 90 ROM when I see my OS on 2/2. My PT thinks I'll be closer to 110. Just said to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm now on ibuprofen 800 2 or 3 times a day. Still resting, icing and elevating as well as doing sensible exercising and PT. Embracing the process rather than fighting it. I hope you are all having a great day!

It seems like you're having a good recovery. Embracing it is all we can do, but look at the results it's giving you. Just be careful to not over do, it's a balancing act.

@Mireille just read your thread. I understand where you are. With my first knee for the first few weeks I felt compelled to do as I was told. When that knee got to rest with the second replacement at week 4 all of a sudden it was so happy. I learned first hand (first knee I guess) that less is truly best. You WILL get through this. Trust your own body. If it hurts or deteriorates after doing something don't do it. My OS supported my decision to live life with knee two. I haven't done anything that made Picchu angrier and at week 7 I'm getting slowly back to a happy life. Please listen to your body not what others say.

Oh, it's so nice when progress happens! I'm so happy you are improving.... I realized yesterday that when I am at home, I really don't notice my progress. BUT, instead, I tend to notice it on the drive to PT. It seems each time I get in the car, drive for an hour, and then walk to the PT building, I notice just a hair of improvement!

Happy 5th newkneeversary! What a great kneeversary present!

@Red's Mom Thanks for the encouragement. I'm taking things one day at a time. I listened to my body this morning and skipped therapy today. They'll still be there when I go back on Monday.
:heehee:
I woke up tired. :mcoffee: I did my stretches and some exercises this morning and will continue to do so until I go back to the PT on Monday.

I'm glad Picchu is happier and continues to behave. I haven't named mine because the names I keep thinking about are not very nice yet, one day....

@L.I.T Thanks! It's amazing what a little improvement does for the soul. A "hair" of improvement is better than none. I think we all take everything we can get. Like you, I also feel improvement in the smallest things. When I sit, I realize my leg isn't frozen straight, I actually sit with a bend in the knee. I can lift my leg and bend it to put socks on Instead of turning into a contortionist.

Still a long way to go but at least moving in the right direction.
We can do this!:yes!:
